Thats a more pertinent question than the original one Heresy! I don't think the first question really needs answering, but with regards to the concept of the US preventing other countries from acquiring nuclear weapons so they will be more powerful, theres a bit of truth there. However, I consider it to be less about the US wanting to stay the dominant force (even if every country in the world acquired nuclear weapons, they could never match the arsenal that the US possesses), but more or less to increase political stability. If every country had nuclear weapons, then every little skirmish could turn into an armageddon scenario.
Classic - most countries name their first nuclear tests pretty standard names - 'trinity', 'RDS-1', '596', 'Changai-1' etc. but India decides to call theirs 'Smiling Buddah'. Thats one Buddah I don't want smiling down on me!
We have a strategic nuclear triad of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, Submarine launched missiles, and B-2 bomber nuclear weapons.
The nucs on submarines are launched into the atmosphere where they break into 6 different warheads and then re-enter the atmosphere and can hit six seperate targets. I believe at anytime we have 6 nuclear subs around the world each carrying about 12-18 nuclear missiles each capable of splitting into 6 warheads but dont qoute me on that.
