Brotherly Love Lost

When the 'King of Philly' (K.O.P.) signed to the biggest record label in the South about four years ago, it sounded a little odd. Cash Money Records glorified that New Orleans hustle and turned N.O. hip-hop into a whole new style of rap. Philly's sound was far different.

But Gillie Da Kid went in with his Philadelphia swagger intact: polo button-downs, Prada shoes, Roberto Cavalli shades. But as quickly as Gillie came to Cash Money, he was gone. Feeling like he was getting shelved for refusing to share his publishing with the label, he split.

Back where he started for 2004, the ringleader for the underground Philly rap group Major Figgas (whose single "Yeah, That's Us" was the #2 single at one point in 2000), transformed his group to a label, Figga 4 Life Ent., which houses the Major Figgas crew (which includes Bump J, Dutch & Spade, Ab Liva [of Re-Up Gang]).

But soon the "K.O.P." started fielding questions regarding alleged ghostwriting he did in his Cash Money Records days. With diss tracks from Lil' Wayne surfacing – including "Problem Solver" off Mix Unit's Like Father Like Son mixtape with Weezy and Birdman – Gillie felt he had no choice but to call out the Cash Money millionaires, saying in multiple interviews that he had ghostwritten tracks from each artist. He also followed up with a diss record of his own: "Warning Shots" [speaker icon, left].

Taking his Cash Money assault to MTV [You Tube, left], Gillie fired shots at Weezy and The Birdman before dropping an exclusive freestyle. He also announced his upcoming mixtape, The Notorious K.I.D.

The City of Brotherly Love's grizzled rap veteran gets a fresh start in the hip-hop game, beginning with this mixtape from DJ 31 Degreez and Jay Fusion. The Notorious K.I.D. features exclusive and classic records from Gillie, including brand new tracks and freestyles (like "10 Gat Commandments"). Featuring Kiotti, Bump J, 8Ball, Uncle Murda, Ab Liva and others, this CD also features production from The Neptunes, Lil' Jon and The Alchemist.

With 22 tracks in total, Gillie brings his Philadelphia swagger back to the underground and mixtape circles, dropping his 1st mixtape since the Cash Money fallout.

Reppin' for the K.O.P., DJ 31 Degreez, Jay Fusion and Gillie Da Kid team up with The Mix Unit to bring you this official Mix Unit Collabo
