A representative for Island Def Jam has come forward to dispel growing reports that the label is planning to drop Nas, due to the title of his upcoming controversial CD, Nigger. Reports surfaced this week stating that retailers were leery of carrying the CD. According to reports, if Nas refused to change the title, Island Def Jam, which is a unit of Universal Music Group, was prepared to drop him from the label. "That is absolutely ridiculous and untrue," an Island Def Jam spokesperson told AllHipHop.com.

Yeah Nas just wants attention, which is fine of you are an over the hill Mc. He does have business savy in this aspect. I respect his business sense in marketing himself in a new light. He can reach the masses with a title that will shock the foundation of hip-hop. In reaching this goal; however, he fails to understand this gimmick will only send minor shock waves in the foundation of hip-hop. Enough to be noticed, but not enough to remove ignorance from hip-hop all together. (KRS-One (A pioneer in the world of the Mc) has been attacking this problem for many years.) So respect to Nas for his short term marketing abilities; however, in business it is always better to generate sales in the long run. I give this cd 1-2 years and it will be forgotten. (Much like most cd's are, unless its Tupac's 75th released cd which always gets the rap community stirred up. (how many songs can companys ruin before you will let his name rest with his great songs that he made and finished, not just cut and paste lyrics.) Now for my personal opinion.

I personally think Nas is an idiot for doing this. His lack of understanding keeps his ignorance fresh in everyones mind. To me it seems as if he is trying to stir racism. In the electronic age we live in racism is a form of past ignorance. To keep re-hashing the same basic ignorance over and over again leaves little to the thought of originality. This concept has been done in Nas lyrics over and over again. I think Nas needs to hang up his hat or find some originality. This is just my opinion as Iam sure someone will jump on my words saying things like "he (Nas) is original and "he (nas) is not over the hill yada yada yada. Save it. I just gave my opinion and only seek to engage in discussions, not revert to name calling.

LOL damn...so much wrong with this post...

He can reach the masses with a title that will shock the foundation of hip-hop.
In what way will the "N" word "shock" the "foundations of hip hop?" Do you realize that rappers have been using the word nigger (miss me with the "difference" between the word nigga and the word nigger. there isn't one) forever now? it makes absolutely no sense to think that this is for shock value. Are you shocked by the word nigger? Do you think anybody else is? You call this a gimmick. What is gimmicky about it? Could it be that there is a concept behind the album as a whole that makes Nigger a relevant conceptual title for it?

Enough to be noticed, but not enough to remove ignorance from hip-hop all together. (KRS-One (A pioneer in the world of the Mc) has been attacking this problem for many years.)
Are you saying that his goal by using that title is to remove the ignorance from hip hop? I don't think anyone is silly enough to actually believe that you can remove ignorance from anything with an album title. Ignorance wont be removed from hip hop until ignorance is removed from people. Good luck with that one.

His lack of understanding keeps his ignorance fresh in everyones mind.
Lack of understanding of what?

To me it seems as if he is trying to stir racism.
First you say its a simple minded marketing tactic, now you say its an attempt to stir yup racsim which makes no sense from a marketing standpoint when you consider that 90% of the people purchasing his albums are white. So which is it?

In the electronic age we live in racism is a form of past ignorance.
Really? Racism is a thing of the past? Its not relelvant in this "electronic age" we live in? Make sure you stop by this site and let them know.

Anyone who thinks racism is a thing of the past, and that being in the 'Electronic Age' has somehow mandated that, has a lot of ignorance themselves.
I think you are overlooking the point that I made. To me racism is a thinkg of the past. Other prefer to keep it constant. I do not have time for racism and treat everyone with respect until they give me a reason not to. The electronic age has brought about a mass change in parts of the world where people have needed help the most. The erasing of strange and unfamiliar regions is a thing of the past. With a network where millions of people can communicate we can learn and understand others natures and ways. Thus ushering a new era of thought and learning. Racism stems from fear and ignorance. Anyone who thinks that the electronic age has not changed the way we act is in dire need of n education. Understanding will lead to change.

Yes but the word is really only used in rap songs. To my knowledge there has never been a cd title (I could be wrong) By a well known rapper (NAS) before. Nas is known for his odd way of thought. I could care less about the word. I do not use it. What is gimmicky about it is the fact of the word and the ignorance associated with it. This is a simple media strategy.

Are you saying that his goal by using that title is to remove the ignorance from hip hop? I don't think anyone is silly enough to actually believe that you can remove ignorance from anything with an album title. Ignorance wont be removed from hip hop until ignorance is removed from people. Good luck with that one.

Iam saying the goal of this title is nothing more then a publicity stunt. You can create ignorance with an album title. Think of it like this. Think of the people who see this in the record store (Internet is no concern because you can avoid it) SO people who are not familiar to rap will look at Rap as being ignorant and with no real value then what they see read and hear. Plus you will continue to have black people who look at this as ignorance.

Lack of understanding of what?

That we are all human beings. The fact that using a word to generate ignorance will be covered in magazines and newsprint. Instead of Nas making a title to negate ignorance he just stirs up more of it.

First you say its a simple minded marketing tactic, now you say its an attempt to stir yup racsim which makes no sense from a marketing standpoint when you consider that 90% of the people purchasing his albums are white. So which is it?

Actually it makes perfect sense. People love controversy. They buy people and us weekly.(Both of which deal in celebrity BS) The thrill of such ignorance is what the masses love. You do not understand the core principals of Marketing. Product (Nas cd), Price (18.00), Promotion (The word Nigger (That ones key right there), Place (Record stores)) These are the simple ones with no lack of depth. Hence simple Marketing tactic. No use of the many other demographics and such. And its really only 75% of people who buy rap are white.

Really? Racism is a thing of the past? Its not relelvant in this "electronic age" we live in? Make sure you stop by this site and let them know.

http://www.stormfront.org

Once again you failed to realize that I typed "I think its becoming irrelevant." In a world where other countries are starting to communicate better, life is becoming better slowly but surely. There will always be racism you can not eradicate it, you can move it away from main society and keep in individuals.

have you heard the album? If not, then how can you comment on its content? How do you even know what any of the concepts are? And what is the concept that he has done over and over again as you say?

I dont intend to support ignorance and racism to which Nas subscribes. I know because I have listend to rap music for a long time. I know what rappers are doing when they put out there cds, its not hard to figure it out, just watch.

The concept that has been done is ignorance.

Remember Jeru's first cd? Listen to it again.

I think Nas is just using this to revitalize a career that has been dying for awhile.

NIGGER! (just kidding)

Indeed

Hey thanks for you opinion! I really don't care about it though. I made a valid point in the topic discussed. If you do not feel as though I did, you are more then welcome to write an appeal to the siccness board explaining the lack of validation in my "OPINION".

I will say this. You have a semi-valid debate; however, you are just one person on the net. Excuse me if I do not do what you would like me to do.

Take care..........friend.
