Different opponents slated first for June 5
Associated Press

LAS VEGAS -- A tentative deal is in place for Oscar De La Hoya to move up in weight and fight undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins later this year in what could be one of the richest non-heavyweight fights ever.

De La Hoya and Hopkins would fight different opponents on the same June 5 card, then meet in either September or November for the middleweight title, a spokesman for promoter Bob Arum confirmed Tuesday.

De La Hoya, who hasn't fought since losing his 154-pound title to Shane Mosley last September, would likely fight unbeaten Felix Sturm of Germany on the first card, while Hopkins would defend his title against mandatory challenger Robert Allen, whom he has already fought twice.

Assuming the two fighters win, they would meet either Sept. 18, or in November.

Contracts for the fights have been drawn up, but have yet to be signed, Arum spokesman Lee Samuels said. The details of the fights were first reported on the Web site of USA Today, which said De La Hoya could make more than $30 million for the two fights, with Hopkins earning some $15 million.

De La Hoya said earlier this month he would return to the ring June 5, and he had been looking at Mosley, Hopkins, Fernando Vargas and Felix Trinidad as possible opponents. Mosley, who has beaten De La Hoya twice, wanted more money than De La Hoya was willing to give, Trinidad still hasn't officially come out of retirement and Vargas has a bad back.

Moving up in weight to fight Hopkins (43-2-1, 31 knockouts) would be a major challenge to De La Hoya, who has won titles in five different weight classes. Hopkins handed Trinidad his only defeat, stopping him in the 12th round of their September 2001 fight, and has made a division record 17 title defenses.

In his last fight, Dec. 13 in Atlantic City, Hopkins gave former champion William Joppy a 12-round beating in a lopsided win.

The 39-year-old Hopkins hasn't lost since Roy Jones Jr. beat him in 1993, but he has a history of hard-nosed negotiating tactics that have cost him several lucrative fights. For the Joppy fight he earned only $500,000, while complaining that De La Hoya was ducking him.

De La Hoya's June 5 opponent would be Sturm, who holds the lightly regarded WBO middleweight title and is unbeaten in 20 fights. Sturm, who has only nine knockouts and has fought only once outside of Germany, said De La Hoya is his idol and that it would be "charming" to fight him.

Arum would like De La Hoya and Hopkins to meet Sept. 18, but for that to happen De La Hoya would have to give up his announcing job with NBC for the Olympics, which would interfere with his training schedule.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even Felix Trinidad fans will admit that Oscar took him to school while only Mosley groupies are in denial over Oscar's clear victory over him in their rematch.
Now Oscar's going after the man on top of the food chain himself, Bernard Hopkins!

Mosley's ego got the best of him asking for too much money for a rubber match between him and Oscar. Trinidad tried to play hardball with De La Hoya, financially. And Vargas is still suffereing from his back injury. What to do? In comes Hopkins who is still on top of his game.
This should be a great match, the biggest fight outside of the heavyweight division. If De La Hoya wins, he will be the first fighter in history to have won 6 titles in 6 different weight classes.
If Hopkins wins then that would make him the most dominant middleweight champ of all time....

I can't wait....

Don't be so sure bro.
It's a good match up for De La Hoya, style wise that is.

He can give Hopkins the same problems Jones gave him by sticking and moving.

The only questions are;
will De La Hoya take Hopkin's punches well?
will Hopkins be able to catch up to De La Hoya?

Hell yeah!
Silva handled himself very well against Mirco so this is going to be interesting. The fight was a draw but I thought Silva did enough to win it.
As for Fedor, I give him a punchers chance. But I big chance at that. Silva can easily fight him toe toe but if Fedor catches him with just one punch, it's gonna be a short night.

Can't wait!

If Hopkins age hasn't caught up with him.... De La Hoya is doomed. Hopkins spanked Trinidad so bad he put him into retirement. I thought Hopkins would lose to Trinidad. I underestimated Hopkins big time. But I won't anymore. Hopkins will beat De La Hoya. Oscar may run too much and lose rounds. Hopkins is going to pressure De La Hoya and make him run.

Well age hasn't caught up to him yet judging by the whoopin he gave William Sloppy.
I think De La Hoya can outbox him with ease. But the drama comes when you look at his last few fights where he gets tired in the last 2 rounds. Will he come in better shape this time?
We won't know until fight night.

I think this is gonna be the best fight of our generation.
Yes Hopkins lost to RJ but he bounced back and became a better fighter. He's still the man at middleweight and I think De La Hoya's still the man at Jr. Middleweight.
This reminds me of the time Ray Leanard moved up the middle weight class and took on the best, Marvin Haggler.
The only difference is that Leanard came out of retirement to capture the middleweight title....

Sugar Shane wasn't busy enough in the last fight against Oscar. You best believe Bernard is going to bring it to Oscar. I really don't see Oscar winning this fight at all. B-Hop has some serious skills. He's going to be De La Hoya.

DE LA HOYA DIDN'T REALLY WANT THIS FIGHT AT ALL. HE WAS FORCED TO TAKE THIS FIGHT. MOSELEY AND TRINIDAD, NO MATTER WHO THE FANS BELIEVE WON, GOT THE VICTORY SO OF COURSE THEY WANT MORE MONEY WHICH DE LA HOYA AINT GIVING UP. THE ONLY OTHER FIGHTS WOULD BE WINKY WRIGHT AND BERNARD, THE TWO FIGHTERS HE BEEN DUCKIN HIS WHOLE CAREER. WRIGHT IS ALREADY TAKEN, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER DECISION. DE LA HOYA WON'T HAVE MUCH ROOM FOR ERROR AT ALL WITH HOPKINS. HE MAY HAVE TO STICK AND MOVE WHICH THE JUDGES MAY TAKE AS COWARDICE, WHICH COST HIM FIGHTS AGAINST TRINIDAD AND MOSELY. IF HE COULDN'T TAKE BODY SHOTS FROM MOSELEY HE IS IN TROUBLE WITH BERNARD, WHO IS KNOWN FOR RUFF TACTICS TO SLOW A RUNNER DOWN. I DON'T SEE THE FIGHT HAPPENING. DE LA HOYA WILL COME TO HIS SENSES AND CHICKEN OUT. IF HEWAS SMART, HE'D FIGHT AN UNPROVEN JERMAINE TAYLOR NOW, BECAUSE JERMAINE WILL BE THE CHAMP IN TWO YEARS TOPS

The odds are stacked against De La Hoya but people fail to realize that he has the necessary tools to beat Hopkins much like Roy Jones did. Sticking and moving. None of the other middle weights or Jr. middleweights have such a shot.

I ain't making my pick until fight night, this is a first for me as far as a De La Hoya fight goes....
