ST LOUIS--University City Police believe a domestic dispute resulted in two murders and a suicide on Thursday. Among the three victims, a seven year old boy.
"We just can't understand it right now. You go through stuff in your life, so you got to be strong about it. I'm trying to be strong for my mother," says Mario Cannon, the brother of Michael Cannon. Police believe Michael Cannon was the gunman.
Still in a state of shock, Mario Cannon tries to make sense of the death of his brother, 34 year old Michael Cannon, his girlfriend, 34 year old Kimberly Charleston, and their son, seven year old Michael Cannon, Junior.
Police say Cannon Senior shot and killed his girlfriend and son, before turning the weapon on himself. "The investigation is on going, but the prelimentary assessment is that it was a murder-suicide, we are under the impression that the couple had been fueding for quite some time," says Major Ernest Green of the University City Police Department.
"Nah, I didn't know of any problems going on, I talked to Michael all the time, he never said nothing, we the type of people that we keep stuff inside, never talk about it," says Mario Cannon.
Seven year old Michael Cannon, Junior, was a kindergarten student at Pershing elementary. A crisis team has been made available to help classmates deal with this tragedy.
"The students in that class are writing letters to Michael's family. They're also drawing pictures which will be given to them at a later time. The principal went to each classroom, explaining to the students what happened," says Daphne Dorsey, a spokesperson for the University City School District.
Authorities say Michael Cannon senior has several criminal convictions for a history of violence, but police wouldn't give specifics. Police say Michael Cannon senior worked as a security guard for St. Louis rapper Chingy and producers Trakstarz, but authorities don't know if he was licensed to carry a firearm.
Outside the home in the 65-hundred block of Etzel are red roses, and a teddy bear to remember the victims.
