CHICAGO -- The Bears waived troubled defensive tackle Tank Johnson on Monday after he was pulled over for speeding in Arizona last Friday.

Johnson already is suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 NFl sason after violating probation on a gun violation.

"He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn't and we have decided to move on," general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement.

Police in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert said Johnson was stopped for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph zone at 3:30 a.m. Friday and the officer made observations that led him to believe Johnson was impaired.

Sgt. Andrew Duncan, a police spokesman, said Johnson was arrested for "DUI Impaired to the Slightest Degree" but was released without being booked or charged.

Duncan said Johnson was taken to the Gilbert police station, where officials drew blood for a blood-alcohol content test before his release. He described Johnson as "very cooperative."

The officer had probable cause to make an arrest, Duncan said. Test results aren't expected for up to two weeks, and they would be sent to Gilbert town prosecutors for consideration of any charges.

Earlier this month, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Johnson for half the regular season for violating the league's toughened personal conduct policy.

At the time Johnson, who recently spent two months in the Cook County jail for violating probation, called his suspension an "opportunity for me to move forward."

Goodell said the suspension could be reduced to six games if Johnson has no further involvement with law enforcement and undergoes counseling.

Last December, police raided the 300-pound defensive tackle's suburban Chicago home and found six unregistered firearms -- a violation of his probation on an earlier gun charge.

That charge stemmed from Johnson's 2005 arrest after a Chicago nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his SUV. He subsequently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

Two days after last December's raid, Willie B. Posey, Johnson's bodyguard, was shot and killed in an early morning fight while he and Johnson were at a Chicago nightclub.

Johnson was suspended by the Bears for one game for being at the club. He played in the Super Bowl as the Bears lost to Indianapolis.

In March, Johnson began his two-month jail stint. Last month, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge stemming from the December raid as part of a deal with prosecutors that kept him from serving more time in jail. He was ordered to serve 45 days, which he served concurrently with the sentence for violating his probation.

"A lot of people within our organization gave extra time and energy to support Tank; players, coaches and our front office," coach Lovie Smith said. "We did our best to establish an environment for him to move forward. Ultimately Tank needed to live up to his side of the deal"

I hope he wasn't legally impaired...Damn the Bears ain't playin... they could have at least waited for the blood-alcohol test results. But after all the trouble Pacman has been causing...They had to do what's best for them. Cut him and move on. He was suspended for half the season anyway. The Bears ain't playin'... they sent a message that other teams need to follow.

Hopefully the Colts pick up Tank for their run defense....It kills me how teams are trying to clean up their "image" nowadays when u need to play on(if not a bit over) the edge to become a champion

please tell me how he is going to help the run defense when his ass is at home every Sunday??????

playing on the edge and LIVING on the edge are 2 different things!

the nfl is a business first and you want professionals working for you....it's really not that hard of a concept to grasp.

Bears are looking like a first class orginization by doing this, instead of the Titans who keep hanging onto a "non-professional" player.

He's obviously a gamble to take....but in some teams cases(ie.the Colts), somebody to consider....football is a fine line, physicality and violence are integral components to being a strong defensive player....I admit that if he's in constant trouble with the law(which he seems 2 be), he won't be much help to a team.....however, I really doubt that most NFL players(especially defensive) are choir boys....Id be willing to bet that there are many other players who are walking on that side of the law, the only reason they are with their teams is because they haven't been caught...Im not disagreeing with the Bears decision to release Tank, however....I feel they were trying to make their organization look "clean" and were taking out the trash so to speak...He was already incacerated this off-season and has had some personal issues which may(or may not) be of his doing.....personally I feel that Tank would be able to beat his demons with the support of a team.....hopefully that's what the Titans are doing with Pacman, instead of looking for a quick fix/solution

you still didn't answer the question of how he will help when he's home on Sunday's!

Not too mention your reasoning is a little funny about defensive players, but ok.

I mean champ Bailey, John Lynch, ronde barber, steve atwater, mike singletary, they all are or were great players on defense because they are boarderline crinminals off the field......bwhahahahaha

seriously thats your defense?

"looking" like a first class orgnazation?

do you think any team other then the titans will kick a player like pacman off there team?...tank johnson is good but he isnt great like pac.....it has to do with the talent AND cap hit that a team will take to release a player.....just because it seems like the bears are being a "first class orgnazation" doesnt mean thats actually the case.......tank is waive material on the other hand pacman is not.....

lets not get shit twisted the NFL is a business so thats exactly how they are looking at this....if tank was coming into his contract year and due a lot of money.....they wouldnt of cut his ass....his contract is expendale and they will probally gain from this......

The Niners would have booted his ass. I can't speak on any other team because I don't know their policies, but I can guarantee Pacman and Tank would have gotten the boot from SF.

Denver would have booted thier asses too.

Hey you're a fan of both Pacman & the Titans...I GET THAT......But don't let your loyalty cloud real judgement!

Bears are proving they don't want that type of atmosphere, Denver has did it before as well, there are plenty of teams that takeon those players yes, but there are also plenty of teams that dont as well.

He was suspended for half the season BEFORE THIS LATEST INCIDENT!

He will now be punished for this one as well.

Easily gone the rest of the season.

Exactly...same with the Hawks. Look at what hey did to Koren and Jerramy.

I think more teams should show this kind of zero tolerence. These players need to realize that this is still a JOB...act accordingly.

I can see the headlines now "Tank Johnson signs to the Raiders"

nah, but this doesn't sound serious tho. I mean 40 in a 25 zone ain't alot, and it says he was impaired to the slightest degree? now unless he has a prior dui then that shit is probably gonna get thrown out and he'll just be left with a speeding ticket, which is not a big offense to be kicked off a team and lose your job. I agree he should be on a short leash due to the gun charges & probation violations, but this is a little extreme.

Don't forget Dale Carter... at that time the Broncos signed him to the fattest contract for a cornerback at that time. Dale screwed up and then got cut.

XACTLY

Denver will give you a look but if you fuck up or don't act right you're gone...don't matter who you are.
