FAIRFIELD -- Former San Francisco Giants great Orlando Cepeda has been arrested on drug and other charges after marijuana was discovered in his car following a traffic stop for speeding, Solano County authorities said.
However, police told the Oroville Mercury that Cepeda was not under the influence when he was stopped Tuesday afternoon on westbound 880.
"The officer smelled an odor of marijuana and conducted a probable-cause search, looking for more," Sgt. Wulf Corrington said.
Corrington told the paper that the California Highway Patrol was using a new laser technology called LADAR to crackdown on speeding on Solano County roadways when Cepeda's 2001 Lexus was clocked doing 83 mph between Highway 12 and Interstate 680 shortly before 3 p.m.
He said marijuana, a syringe and a powder believed to be either cocaine or methamphetamine were seized from the vehicle during a search.
Cepeda, 69, who lives in the Solano County community of Suisun City, was booked into county jail and his bail was set at $10,000.
It was not the first time Cepeda has found himself in trouble with the law. In the 1970s, Cepeda was arrested while picking up a marijuana shipment in the San Juan airport in his native Puerto Rico.
The incident nearly cost Cepeda his spot in baseball's Hall of Fame. Only with the help of his fellow countrymen was Cepeda finally elected to the Hall by the veteran's committee in 1999.
Currently, Cepeda works as a community representative for the Giants.
