AVI/MPEG/MPEG-2/SVCD/VCD help!!!!

ok ok, im trying too burn a " dvd" with my burner, now im hearing i need too convert the files too MPEG if its a wmv or avi file, my question too u guru's is whats a good program? i tried getting this avi2mpeg, but it wont work. any ideas?

I use nero to burn dvds.

I just got a DVD burner with Nero the other day, it just lets me import AVI files and makes em into a DVD. I haven't tried other formats yet but I think it just lets you import whatever.
