Good test for Diaz. I've been a fan of his for some time now, but his workrate against Miguel Cotto's brother (Jose Miguel Cotto) made me a solid fan. Diaz by UD.

Diaz unifies lightweight titles!
Baby Bull makes Popo quit after eight

WBA champion Juan Diaz (32-0, 16 KOs) retained his title and added the WBO belt of Acelino Freitas (38-2, 32 KOs) with a eighth round TKO on Saturday night at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. From the start, the pace was fast and furious. As usual, Diaz was an aggressive non-stop punching machine and Freitas stayed with him punch for punch. The direction of the fight was revealed in round five when Diaz had Freitas hurt and reeling. Popo made it out of the round, but from then on Freitas seemed to be wearing down while Diaz remained fresh. Freitas was hurt again in the eighth round and quit on his stool before the start of round nine.

Diaz broke him and made him quit. Freitas had a few good rounds (still could have gone either way) but Diaz worked him to the body and kept constant pressure the whole time. Juan's jab was consistant and strong and set up alot of other shots not to mention all the body work. I thought Diaz could have gotten him out of there a few round earlier but he showed he can get to someone who's faster than him and he also showed he could take a good punch from a strong fighter. Good win for Diaz.

^^Haha...Yeah they mentioned that he's still doing all that schooling. I gotta give that fool credit, he's only 23, a full time college student and at the same time the lightweight champ..not bad. You don't see much of that in boxing.

You're right about Freitas though, he gave up against Corrales but I didn't think Diaz had the power to make him quit too. During the broadcast they were mentioning that he's not a big power guy, but I think he's getting alot stronger, he turned pro at 16 so alot of his fights were when he was still a kid. He'll only get better and Freitas is a good name to have on your record.

Nah, I don't think a move up in weight would be good for him. He may move to 140 and be successful, but I don't see him beating any of the tops guys at 147. But if you look at his body type, I don't think he's really struggling to make 135 and it actually looks like he can shed a few pounds off his mid section, so I think he'll be staying at 135....I seen that article on Bojado too, hopefully that fool will come back and be dedicated to the sport. He liked to get down and had alot of potential and he's still only 23-24, so I wouldn't count him out. We'll have to see.

Freitas is a bum.

Quitting on the stool is rarely excusable. Can't breathe (ie-broken nose), broken hand, injury, etc. is OK. Tsyzu did it with Hatton but their was one round left and he was in Hatton's home town, that's border line but acceptable. Acelino was going into round 9 and quit. He wasn't getting pummled, he was just losing. Then they raised him and he put his hands in the air. Was he serious? That whole scenario just pissed me off.
