E-40 has always been one of my favorite artists in the game and in music as a whole, but I realized I'm not finding myself hyped for Breakin' News as much as I should be. Before Grit And Grind came out I was pumped as fuck for that album... went to the music store the day it came out and snatched it. I was happy with it, and still am "in a way", but shit, I'll bump any of 40's Cd's over Grit and Grind these days. It just doesnt have the lasting appeal that everything else he has put out does... Federal, In A Major Way, even Loyalty which came out only 2 years before G&G... they all have the kind of shit that ill bump for YEARS. But Grit And Grind... man I havent put that in in days. I cant exactly explain why either. The songs knock, but something is wrong.

And I think that "something" is going to be even more extreme with Breakin' News.

We have 3 songs from it already: Gasoline, One Night Stand, and Quarterbackin'. Out of these, I cant really pick one that stands out among the others. They ARE all good songs, but I dont see myself listening to them for too long. One Night Stand and Gasoline got old quick. Quarterbackin is a little better, but I dont want to hear that mother fucker Clipse on the mic. Fuck this east coast shit. If all the songs are like these 3, it will be a pretty mediocre CD, and it wont have lasting power.

I dont want to hear these mainstream cats rapping with 40 on his CD. I want to hear some MOBBED OUT CLICK SHIT, with B Legit, Too Short... hell, even someone like W.C. or Ice Cube, or Jayo... all them came hard when with E-40.

I dont know what E-40's gameplan is, (especially with only 13 tracks on this new cd), but he better come through tight or I'm going to lose even more interest in one of the best rappers ever than I already have after G&G.

thoughts?

I agree with you on this. I ain't really feelin any of those 3 songs. But you have to remember artist grow with time. Some time those changes they make doesn't seem to sit well with the normal fan base. This rap game is about gettin money and you have to make changes to get that money. If 40 is only selling 1 million every time out then he needs to make some changes so he can get that other 4 million listeners. 40 really needs Nellys and Eminems fan base to get those kind of sales. So he is doing what he needs to do. He can't sell 5 million just in Cali and the north west. He needs those east coast cats and down south cats to pick up his shit. I don't see anything he is doing as selling out. Unless he starts rapping just for bitches. Point I am trying to make, 40 is growing with the times and doing what needs to be done to reach that next level. Hell this redneck dude where I work be walking around talking about fasheezy then going to tell me snoop dog made that shit up. I know it was Keek. But 40 made that shit pop. Now if 40 can sell 5 mil folks will get his old shit too then see that 40 been making major shit for hella long.

I feel you to tha fullest homie. I was just thinkin today about breakin news and thought about G&G, I was pumped as fucked when G&G was gonna drop, got it the first day it came out and it failed. It's nothing like he produced in the past, it's garbage to tell you the truth, haven't listened to it since last year, EARLY lasst year. I thought to myself, will breakin news be worth getting? I brought myself to the same situation I was in before G&G and I'm not as hyped up anymore. I'm still gonna snatch it to support the bay tycoon tho. I took another look at the tracklist and I know I won't like it as much as from Federal to loyalty and betrayal. I mean come mayn, he got a south track, and a clipse track. Is that really 40's style? I know it's good for exposure but what about the true fans from day one? I'm sure there's no Studio Ton on tha beats and probably the only feature on the LP will be B-Legit and no Little bruce, no sick wid it hoggz period, except for his new artist turf somethin'. I miss Mike Mosley & Sam Bostic, tha Mobb shit that rick rock used to produce. The classic studio ton. And when will any of tha hoggz from the label ever drop another LP? No more A-1, Playaz tryna strive, they dropped little bruce, no more classic click shit. DAMN.

and no more Bosko ;( Daaaaaamn

Mr. Strike I feel you, but what about his real fans from day one? The fans that made "in a major way" go platinum? If 40 dissapoints bay fans again, what do you think it'll do to his sales from his real fans? We from tha bay, we ain't tryna hear no 40 with no southern beat and petey pablo on the hook, we wanna hear some muthafuckin Levitti, or some of that Mike Mosley & bostic production, some muthafuckin studio ton on the damn beats. I'm tired of hearin them Laser beats man. I wanna hear another Steve D on the beats collabin' with 40. She gon hate this was a muthafuckin kkkkkkkknnnnnnnnnnock "ooooh ooooooooohhh"

Yeah, Psilo--you've got good points. I agree with you on LOYALTY & BETRAYAL. I was disappointed with it in 2000, but I put it in quite a bit these days, and think, "yeah--this sounds GOOD..." Ain't it funny how time changes perspectives?

One thing that hasn't yet been mentioned: Back about '99, 40 told MURDER DOG that Jive was "on some pop tart shit," (Britney Spears, boy bands, etc). Even though rappers don't talk about it, it seems to be an unwritten law that once you sign to a major, you WILL be forced to make changes, and that may be what's happened here.

40 himself might not care about reaching the teenybopper suburban market, but Jive does. After all, the music game is a business, and majors want to sell, sell, sell, period. And it could be that maybe Jive PUTS PRESSURE on 40 to make certain kinds of records, or else. I mean, think about it: once you sign the contract, the company basically has you by the nuts. Can they refuse to put your CD out unless you put more radio-friendly shit on it? Unfortunately, you bet.

I'm hoping BREAKING NEWS turns out better than I expect, but I'm not expecting miracles. The only way I see 40 going back to a more Bayish, street style is if he leaves Jive and gets with an independent distributor--after all, The Mossie's POINT SEEN, MONEY GONE and D-Shot's MONEY, SEX AND THUGS from 2001 were put out more-or-less independently, and I find myself playing those more than GRIT & GRIND. But 40 is a pioneer, and he's made enough dope music over the years to make him a Rap/Hip-Hop King!

PEACE!

I dont know what most of you all are talkin about, gasoline is still the knock and it hasnt gotten old at all. I agree with one night stand though and I aint heard quarterbackin enough yet.

I still cant wait but am pissed that we gotta wait another month. This better mean jive decided they wanna promote this shit correctly and get him on all the shows and shit. If not, I will be super pissed.

I didn't say I wanted bay area rap to sell nationally... bay area rap is MY shit and fuck what the rest of the country thinks.

I am glad 40 is doing it big, but I wish he would stay true "along" with going big and doing shit with major artists.

You're just looking for some points to argue with. I find it hard to believe you truly feel that way If youre a 40 fan.

(P.S. Your response didnt even really comment on what my original post was all about. And that is the *possible* degradation of quality of E-40's recent work. Might wanna check it again.. Cuz I said "fuck this east coast shit" ONCE, but my post wasnt about that at all... at ALL.)

dont you mean "stutter?" i dont see many people talk in big ass bold ass type like that too often...so when i seen it i thought i was about to read some real intelligent, important shit or something. lol. why wouldnt someone bitch about one of their favorite artists who used to lay it down super-clean and now they making trash with garbage-ass artists just so they can "try" to break through to the mainstream. yall need to admit that 40 aint even big...he barely gets rotation anywhere. waaaay more people talk shit bout 40's style than there are that like it. this horse has been beat to death about the whole changing up your style and image to go mainstream or whatever, shit is so played out...everyone knows the deal...

^^^^Thats your opinion...run with it...fine by me...

@Psilo...i know you mentioned the "East Coast" thing once...but why mention it at ALL???Its not the point...so leave it OUT...ya dig?I dont think 40 has lost a step at all....most people rate artists on their BEATS..and not what they SAY...look at Lynch new shit...alotta cats said he "fell off"...and all they talk about is the lack of tight beats...but what the FUCK does the goddamn BEAT gotta do with what he spittin about???One dimensional fans are ignorant...music isnt just instruments...

Bottom line...40 IS DOIN IT...if you dont like his shit...dont buy it...but to say he fallen off or lackin or "sellin out" or whatever the fuck yall wanna say...is plain old BULLSHIT and YOU know it..just cus them man MOVED ON FROM 95...dont mean he lackin...times change man..this is fuckin 2003...i dont wanna hear the same shit from 95...whats the point? As an artist...you wanna move FORWARD...not stay in one place or ever step back a couple notches...music LISTENERS just dont get it....if yall were the ones rappin/producin/engineerin....you would understand a lil better..,on the outside lookin in...thats YOUR perspective on the rap game...or as it is,a BUSINESS...learn about it....

Opinions are opinions...but dont spit a bunch of crap about someone fallin off cus he expanded his BUSINESS tactics...he left 95...in 95...maybe yall should do the same...

It's funny cuz...I'm looking forward to this album a lot, but I am sort of worried..."One Night Stand", "Gasoline", and "Act A Ass" are my shits, but "Quarterbackin'" is horrible, IMO...the verses are alright, but that beat is HURT.

I just hope he don't try to branch out too much where he switches everything up, cuz right now all his rapping on those songs has been the same style...usually he comes with different styles on every song.

But so far it's 3 out of 4 are hard as fuck to me from what I've heard, but it's usually 4 for 4 so maybe it is degrading a bit.

And Grit & Grind is one of my ultimate shits, I love that album front to back I don't understand how people don't like it...

FOR ME PERSONALLY I think his climax was In a major way all those before led up to it and after kind of declined. I didnt pick up grit and grind cause i heard some of it and didnt feel it. When I heard Gasoline I loved it I think 40 is back thats just my opinion I was listening to him on the radio and he was talking about the game and having the bay blow up like LA and the South and NY and he knows what he is doing ley him do his thing and I know imma cop a new 40 album for the first time since charlie hustle

mayne, that song "Every Year" came out in like 1997, on the rhyme n reason soundtrack.

about 40's new album, I think its goin kill Grit & Grind. all the songs i've heard from the new joint have been off tha hook (except maybe one night stand). Gasoline is tight as hell, act-a-ass is dope, and the clipse come tight along with 40 on quaterbackin. I copped grit n grind the first day it came out and I don't think I've touched it since. Breakin New ima grip first day too, I jus hope I can listen to it for more than a day.
