San Francisco 49ers guard Larry Allen and running back Frank Gore have been selected to participate in the 2007 Pro Bowl, it was announced today. Allen was named to his 11th Pro Bowl while Gore is making his first career Pro Bowl appearance. Also, cornerback Walt Harris was named as a first alternate and defensive tackle Bryant Young was chosen as a second alternate.

As a member of the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 1990’s, Larry Allen has long been widely recognized as one of the NFL’s premier offensive lineman. In 13 NFL seasons since being drafted out of Sonoma State by the Dallas Cowboys, Allen has been named to the Pro Bowl 11 times. This is first Pro Bowl berth as a member of the 49ers after making 10 appearances as a member of the Cowboys. Allen has been an instrumental piece of the 49ers offensive unit which ranks third in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt (5.0) and fourth in rushing yards per game (138.1)

Gore, a second-year player from Miami is having a breakout season. The running back leads the NFC and ranks third in the NFL with 1,491 rushing yards. He needs 80 yards to set a franchise record with the most yards in a season. Garrison Hearst currently holds the 49ers mark with 1,570 yards rushing in 1998. He leads the league with 14 rushes of 20 or more yards. Gore has set franchise records in rushing yards in a game with a 212-yard performance against Seattle (11-19-06) and holds the team record with eight 100-yard rushing games. He has also been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week twice this season.

Harris was chosen as a first alternate. If he plays in the game it will be his first Pro Bowl appearance. Harris has been one of the best free agent acquisitions in the NFL, leading the team with a career-high six interceptions. The 11-year veteran from Mississippi State intercepted a career-high three passes against the Oakland Raiders (10-8-06), good for second in team history for a single game. He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Harris was an opportunistic defender in the month of November, accounting for three interceptions in the 49ers four games. Harris also added 19 tackles and one forced fumble in November and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Month.

Young was named as a second alternate. If he plays in the game it will be his fifth Pro Bowl appearance. One of the most respected and disruptive defensive players in the NFL, Young’s explosive combination of speed, strength, quickness and intensity have served him well in his thirteen seasons with the team. In 2006, the defensive lineman has 5.0 sacks and 54 tackles. Currently, Young ranks third all-time in team history with 82.5 career sacks.

After going 2-14, then 4-12 and now having a slim but clear shot at the playoffs gives me more than enough reason to be proud of their performance this year. Frank Gore deserves his first Pro Bowl appearance and there will be plenty more in the future. Larry Allen is a beast and also deserves it this year, as he has every year he was selected.
