If you are a fan of classic noir stuff, or modern 'urban crime drama' I cant recommend him enough. He and Richard Price, who I also recommend--his stuff is much darker in tone, and much slower in pace--were integral to the wire. And I'm a lot more discriminating about my literature than I am about my TV.
i've never gotten into noir books but i've been interested in the genre, just dont know where to start. whats a good jumping point in price's work?

Freedomland as long as you havent seen the movie. If you have seen it, it might taint the read for you in which case maybe Lush life, which is his most recent I think. Price is a heavy read, its just really emotionally rough, pelecanos on the other hand, although his stories are violent and his characters are nicely flawed or totally evil writes much more cartoony--and I dont mean that in a bad way--stories. Also, if you want to add a little breadth to your contemporary noir reading, you should pick up some daniel woodrell. Get the bayoo trilogy (im sure i mispelled that). Although The Death Of Sweet Mister is better, its not a good way to get into woodrell.

If anything Americans should be worried about trying to help natives out of the slums labeled as "reservations". Help those drunk wife beating bums get off drugs and be productive cititizens. Everytime I go to a tribal meeting I feel ashamed of being native, it's like tryin to fight with a group of people who never made it past middle school.

Instead of getting jobs, these fuckers sit at homes paid for by their tribes and destroy the houses given to them, then when the tribe refuses to fix the house they destroyed in a drunken rage they bitch and call them sell outs.

Fuck you get a job, you fucking worthless humans.

You can @ me all you want but the fact is and I hate to say it. Natives are ungrateful fucks.

My pops has been a tribal chairmen for years in the early 90s and then left bc of the bullshit. He finally got tired of "new tribal chairmen" stealing all the $ and taking their families on trips out of country and buying them new cars.

Even now tribal members have accused my pops of buying me new trucks and than he just bought me a new 5 br house.

I own 2 trucks all paid for and rent a town house for $1400 a month and I work for it.
