So weed has a bunch of active ingredients in it--the stuff that gets you high--but most of weed is just cellulose, plant material. You can take a solvent like butane, or C02, and combine it with weed and a little heat or pressure. Most of the active stuff--again thhose are the chemicals that get you high--gets pulled out from the plant material and goes into solution with the solvent. Then you collect the solvent/good stuff solution and get rid of the solvent (evaporation and heat do this) and all you're left with is the stuff in the weed that gets you high without any of the plant material that it was stored in. Thats wax. The scenario I described for extraction is 'perfect world' so there's always loss and contamination at every stage that I didnt go into.
