NAAZIM RICHARDSON: "THESE GUYS HAVE A REAL CHALLENGE IN FRONT OF THEM WITH MATTHYSSE...ANYTHING HE HITS, HE HURTS"
By Percy Crawford | May 23, 2013

"Listen, these guys fighting Matthysse that's struggling to make weight and just think they gonna go and move for 12 rounds; you gotta have your legs to move for 12 rounds and if you struggled to make the weight limit, you won't have your legs to move the way you would have to move to stay away, and if he connects in one round, it takes your legs away for the rest of the fight, so to say it's a double-edge sword is an understatement. These guys have a real challenge in front of them with Matthysse...If you can't make Matthysse miss for at least 8 rounds, then you are in trouble. Anything he hits, he hurts. I had that kid in camp one time and anything he hits, he hurts," stated world-class trainer Naazim Richardson, who shared his thoughts on Lucas Matthysse's performance, a potential clash with Danny Garcia, and more. Check it out!

PC: Brother Naaz, I won't keep you long; just wanted to ask a few questions about Matthysse and Peterson. First of all, I know you were in attendance and you have known Lamont and Barry Hunter for a long time. What did you tell Lamont after the fight?

NR: You know Perc, the first thing I asked him after the fight was, was he okay physically, and he said yes, he felt fine physically, he was just disappointed. I told him, "As long as you are okay physically, the rest is just boxing." You know, you deal with the ups and downs and being disappointed and that's just a part of boxing, but the main thing was that he was okay physically and I told him he's been fighting for a long time and he's been here before and he bounced back. I don't see a reason why he couldn't do it again.

PC: Lucas Matthysse definitely comes as advertised, and that's the problem for his opponents is that he's exactly what people say he is.

NR: Listen, these guys fighting Matthysse that's struggling to make weight and just think they gonna go and move for 12 rounds; you gotta have your legs to move for 12 rounds and if you struggled to make the weight limit, you won't have your legs to move the way you would have to move to stay away, and if he connects in one round, it takes your legs away for the rest of the fight, so to say it's a double-edge sword is an understatement. These guys have a real challenge in front of them with Matthysse, and on top of that, they are sweating down in weight, and when you sweat down in weight, I mean, Lamont was fighting my son Rock in the amateurs at 140 pounds years ago, so he can make 40, but he can't move for 12 rounds like Sergio Martinez for 12 rounds at 140, and that's what you need to do with Matthysse.

PC: So you definitely feel it was a matter of Lamont at some point having to stop and fight Lucas is what caused him to get caught so early?

NR: If you can't make Matthysse miss for at least 8 rounds, then you are in trouble. Anything he hits, he hurts. I had that kid in camp one time and anything he hits, he hurts; trust me! It's a discipline to it. They see Bernard fight Trinidad and Bernard fight Tarver and see Bernard fight Pavlik and you say it's an easy fight; you can do this. And then you see Sergio Martinez fight Chavez and he loses focus for a split second, or you see Meldrick Taylor fight Chavez Sr. and he loses focus in the last round. It's difficult.

PC: Now you have watched Danny Garcia fight for a long time and it looks like he will be throwing down with Matthysse in September. Can Danny end this hype or does Matthysse stamp his "Fighter of the Year" card?

NR: Matthysse is a rough one, man, but I'm gonna hold the horses. I'm a Matthysse fan and I like him and loved his personality when we had him in camp, but you gotta prove to me that you can take Danny Garcia's left hook. Matthysse got a chin too, but you gotta prove to me that you can take Danny's left hook. So that's one of those types of fights that if Danny lands that left hook from the door, we gonna find out some things about Matthysse. But I'm gonna tell you, whoever emerges from that fight is a bonafide superstar and a definite candidate for Floyd.

PC: Yeah, I had to get your thoughts on that fight because Matthysse is obviously punching like a mule.

NR: Well, he's doing a few things because he's one of the few guys that have a hard punch, but he's got a good chin too.

Fuck that Mayweather staying drug free article. Nothing happened really with practically nothing happening to his fighters, yet he still supports them. Just let's me wonder now if he uses drugs? If these people are getting paid off i wonder if he pays them off? I don't think he uses but you can't give him credit for calling out something that already exists. What doesn't exist is a real boxing champ cuz promotional companies not willing to put up fights that real fans want to see.

Floyd Sr: Lucas Matthysse is not an elite fighter

While boxing fans around the world are willingly going ga-ga over Argentina's power-punching junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse, Floyd Mayweather Sr doesn't see what the big deal is, saying that Matthysse is just a banger, and doesn't have elite skills.

From Chris Robinson:

"He's a guy that just throws hard punches. He's not a skillful fighter. He's a banger and I didn't see nothing that impressed me about him but his power. He does have power. ... He's not an elite fighter. If you want to call him an elite fighter because of his power, you call him elite fighter then. As far as his skills? No."

Predictably, this also means that Floyd Sr believes his son would easily deal with Matthysse, which I don't mean as a shot when I say "predictably" -- I think only the most truly insane would really pick Lucas to beat Floyd, and I expect few would even see him being competitive.

Sr doesn't usually give anyone props, but there is skill in what Matthysse does. To some fans, and I'm sure Sr, its only "skillful" to be a defensive wizard. But it takes just as much skills to be an aggressive fighter and effective, otherwise everyone who comes forward would be no better than Margarito. Roberto Duran for example, who most all historians place top 10-15 of all time greatest fighters, wasn't some mindless brawler. No it takes skill. Same applies for guys like Golovkin and Matthysse.

For Floyd Sr to come out and say something about Mathysse shows how far along Lucas has come. What Lucas does on the ring takes a lot of skill, and plus doesn't take much punishment to his body throughout his career, without being scared to go toe to toe. That is something Floyd can never do.

Alexander: I'd Rematch Mattyhsee At 147

Ryan Burton

IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander won a close split decision over Lucas Matthysse in June, 2011. Some observers felt that the Argentine sensation deserved to get the nod on the scorecards. On a recent edition of BoxingScene Radio, Alexander said that he had no problem with facing Matthysse again. That fight was Alexander's last fight as a junior welterweight. He was knocked down in the 4th round and attributed part of his struggles in the fight to the difficulty of making the 140 pound weight limit for the fight.

"I would definitely love to fight Matthysse again, at a comfortable weight. People look at Matthysse and say that he has a perfect record but technically and logically he lost twice to me and Zab. It would be the same (final) result if we fight again but at 147 pounds. That fight was the hardest fight for me to make weight so it would definitely be a different outcome if I was fighting comfortably at 147. A lot of people ask me (about a Matthysse rematch) and I would definitely fight him again," Alexander stated. The 26-year-old said that Matthysse is the hardest puncher he has faced in his career which is saying a lot being that he has faced many noted sluggers such as Marcos Maidana, and Randall Bailey. He said that the key to beating a strong puncher is to not get caught up thinking too much about their power."

I must say that Matthysse is the hardest puncher I have been in the ring with. I think a lot of it was the weight (issues) but never the less he hits the hardest. It was mostly the body shots, not so much the headshots. He hit me with some hard body shots." People pump his power up and that's all they think about. You can't think about that when you step in the ring. I fought Matthysse, Maidana and Bailey and that's what I did, I didn't think about (the power) in the fights."

Alexander has been pretty damn boring lately but props for constantly fighting the tough fights (last opponent wasn't his fault, late replacement ). I thought Matthysse should have got the decision however it was close but if they do rematch I see Matthysse starting a lot faster and getting a clear win.

Anyways, cool for Devon to admit he was the hardest puncher he's faced and the body shots hurt him. A lot of guys would never admit shit like that.

Ward: Froch struggles when fighting outside of the UK
May 26th, 2013 | Post Comment

Froch Ward Froch vs. Ward mikkel kessler carl froch boxing andre ward By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andr Ward says he has a pretty good idea why IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch is so determined to fight all of his fights in the UK. It’s because he was beaten twice when he left the UK to fight guys and he doesn’t want to have that happen again.

Ward said to thesun.co.uk “His Froch] record is 4-2 on the road and he’s undefeated in the UK so I know why he wants it here [in the UK]. Let’s talk about it if you’re serious or else just stop ringing my name up.”

Is Ward kidding? I doubt Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn will stop mentioning Ward’s name.
It’s the name to mention to get immediate attention from boxing and the media because Ward is the #1 fighter in the division. That’s not going to change just because Froch beat Mikkel Kessler last Saturday night.

Hearn is making a big deal about Froch having two titles and Ward having only one, but that doesn’t matter. It might as well be a paper title because it doesn’t mean anything other than Froch being the second best fighter in the division. For him to be the best he’s going to have to beat the best and that means he’ll have to beat Ward.

I do agree with Ward about Froch having problems when fighting outside of the UK. He lost to Ward and was beaten by Kessler in fights that took part outside of the UK. And if Froch had fought Andre Dirrell outside of the UK, I have a feeling Froch would have lost that fight.

Froch’s record in his last 7 fights is 5-2 with 3 of the wins coming in the UK. That means Froch is 2-2 on the road, not 4-2. Looks like Ward is giving Froch more credit than his record deserves in his last seven fights.

Lennox Lewis: Froch needs to improve to beat Andre Ward
May 26th, 2013 | Post Comment

Froch Ward Froch vs. Ward mikkel kessler lennox lewis carl froch boxing andre ward By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was pleased with IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s win last night over WBA champ Mikkel Kessler, but Lewis is realistic about Froch’s chances in a rematch against WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Lewis feels that unless Froch improves a whole lot over what he showed last night against Kessler, he’ll get taken to school by Ward if he chooses to ever fight the talented American again.

Ward beat Froch with a broken left hand two years ago in a one-sided fight, and he says it’ll be even easier with two healthy hands.

Lewis said to Sky Sports “He [Froch] cannot fight the same way he fought in this fight…Andre Ward is a serious hombre and he’s coming there to fight and he’s looking for that knockout. If he sees a chink in your armor in any way he will seize that opportunity.”

Lewis thinks Froch threw away his technique during parts of his fight with Kessler last night and just looked to slug with him. He sees this as something Froch can’t do in a rematch with Ward because he’d take advantage of Froch’s wildness and wide open defense while he’s trying to slug. You have to remember that Ward’s best moments two years ago in their fight in 2011 came when Froch was trying to slug.

Ward would duck or block Froch’s wild shots and tag him in the head each time. When they got in close, Ward totally dominated Froch to the point where Froch would look over at the referee for help, as if he didn’t realize that inside fighting was part of the sport of boxing.

I don’t blame Froch for not having good inside fighting skills because he comes from the background where most of the fighting is done on the outside, so he never learned how to fight on the inside like Ward.

I honestly don’t think Froch can improve enough to beat Ward. I don’t even think Froch will do as good as he did last time. In a rematch, I see Ward really beating Froch bad to the point where his corner might want to consider stopping the fight.

With two healthy hands, Ward would be a terror to Froch and it wouldn’t matter where the fight was staged. Ward could beat Froch on the moon if they had a way of staging it there. The talent level between them is so far apart that it’s not even funny.

If Ward wants a rematch that bad with Froch (since its good money ) he should just fight him in the UK. Even though Ward beat him easily already and even though Ward is the true lineal 168 pound champion, the one criticism he gets is he always fights in Oakland or in the US, whereas all these other guys traveled and fought opponents in their backyards so its a great opportunity for Ward to shut the critics up.

Additionally, the somewhat sad truth is that Ward, even though the best, really isn't a draw, and Froch can make tons of money fighting anyone like Hopkins, Kessler trilogy, or Bute rematch. Ward has no money fights. None. Froch is really the only money fight for him at 168.

So its an interesting scenario Ward is in. He dominated Froch, dominated everyone at 168, is clearly the best fighter there, and yet he NEEDS the Froch rematch more than Froch does! Pretty rare scenarios like this occur.

Ward fought him in Atlantic City and embarrassed the piss out of Froch. He doesn't need to silence critics, he already did that win his win. He hardly has that many fans out there outside of the West Coast. Going to the East Coast and winning damn near every round was good enough for me. That's like saying that Floyd Mayweather should fight Ortiz in Kansas because of the way the fight ended. He was embarrassing him before the Ortiz foul. Only reason there is a rematch in either fight is because of money and the dude who was clearly winning is going to command more money, and the location. Simple as that.

I see what you're saying and I do mostly agree but Froch has no problem being the #2 best fighter in the division and can make money fighting anyone whereas Ward doesnt have any big fights on the horizon.

Froch obviously isn't scared of fighting in the states since he has already. Ward hasn't left the US while Froch, Kessler, Abraham, Dirrell and even Bute did.

Personally I think its obvious Ward would school Froch anywhere they fight, but its more money fighting in the UK, 20,000 sold out arena or 6k tickets sold in Oakland for $25 each. Plus it would be a PPV in Europe. It's a no brainer.

And I'm not saying Ward needs to prove anything, he's the best, but if he wants the rematch, which he does because he constantly talks about it, he's going to have to go to the UK. If not I don't have the slightest clue who he can fight at 168. He'll have to move to 175 for any big fights.

That definitely makes sense then if theres way more money for Ward fighting in the UK. Kind of pathetic though he cant get a ppv fight in the US (not on his part), what the fuck is with that? Where the fuck are the boxing fans here to demand this fight. Does Ward have to knock out another good fighter before hes considered exciting enough to be a ppv draw? What more can he really do?

It's just one of those things where for whatever reason people just don't recognize Ward for how truly great he is. I think a lot of people are turned off by his style.

It's a very rare scenario where the #1 guy, who already dominated the #2 guy but is begging for a rematch because of the money. But that's the reality - Froch has a lot of fans, Ward doesn't.

Ward just need to keep winning and people will take notice, similar to Bernard Hopkins who dominated his division for years before he finally landed a PPV fight (Trinidad).

But that's a crap argument cause everyone knows Floyd only fights in Vegas lol
I only said Ward should fight him in Vegas is to get more fame and fight in a one of the biggest if not biggest venue. He doesnt have anything to prove but if he wants to get bigger and possibly a PPV type fighter then he needs to fight in places like Vegas thats all. Got Em!!
