Boxing's Finest in the Lower Weight Division
"This is Boxing"

by Val Soliman

When two of the best in boxing collides in the ring, does it really matter which weight class they are in? Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire vs Guillermo "El Chacal" Rigondeaux, a WBO/WBA unification bout in the Super Bantamweight Division is about to unfold.

Both coming off from knockout victories, both are technically skilled fighters who knows how to switch from boxing to fighting. They both have excellent amateur and professional records. As an amateur, Donaire won three national championships (National Silver Gloves-1998, National Junior Olympics-1999, National USA Tournament-2000. In 1999, he won the International Junior Olympics.

Rigondeaux from Cuba, won the gold medal in Summer Olympics back in 2000 and 2004. Rigondeaux is a 7-time Cuban national champion from 2000-2006. He holds an amateur record of nearly 400 fights - simply telling us that he is the best amateur boxer of all-time. As a professional, Guillermo is still undefeated(11-0, 8KO's, KO% 72.73 ), while Nonito holds a record of 31-1, 20 KO's, KO% 62.5.

Their fighting style and boxing skills adds more interest in this fight. Nonito can switch from Southpaw to Orthodox stance. Just like Rigondeaux, Nonito is a good counter-puncher with power on both hands. They can slug it out when they need to. The fight can end in a very unpredictable manner. It is very interesting to see who is more intelligent in the ring, who's got the better timing, who's faster and who's going to prevail.

This fight is more easier to make (TOPRANK Promotions, not needing to deal with Golden Boy Promotions to make Abner Mares fight), and yet a very significant fight for both Nonito and Guillermo. Whoever wins this fight will be considered as the "King" of the Super Bantamweight Division. Having seen how these two fighters beat their opponents in the past couple of years, we can only expect that they won't have a walk in the park to get that "W". It has to be earned by both mind and physical strength.

There was an argument on who would really pose bigger threat(Mares or Rigondeaux) to Donaire who is currently rated as one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world. After TOPRANK thrashed the $3million offer by GBP, and Mares moving up to Featherweight Class. The fight with Rigondeaux showed more light as TOPRANK is now finalizing the proposed fight.

This is boxing at its best. A fight that every boxing fans wants to see. Thanks for reading.

I cant wait for this shit!!!! needs to be a 24/7 like the ward vs dawson fight

Oscar De La Hoya Mentoring Victor Ortiz to gain Endorsement Deals

By Shawn Craddick

We have been hit by a whirlwind of advertisements lately with former champion Victor Ortiz. At one time he was hailed as the new face of Oscar De La Hoya. They called him the goldenboy because he had that "Look" to him. He used his handsome features to secure some advertising and branding. As he got older and could not keep up with the younger and faster boxers he knew he had established himself with good endorsements Years later Oscar De La Hoya is still a household name. This is where Victor Ortiz comes in.

Oscar is showing Victor how to brand himself and become marketable. He has the youth, a great childhood story, and the looks to go with it. Oscar saw something in him that he once had. The "it". Within the last year or so we see Victor Ortiz in commercials, doing some acting and coming out with his own products such as cologne and body lotion. Why not? We all know boxing doesn't last forever and when it stops, how long will your money last. Michael Jordan will never go broke again in his life. Oscar is on that path like Jordan and he's mentoring Victor Ortiz to get to that next step. Great move, if only more boxers took that approach.

That's the first thing I thought... facelube??????????wtH???????

when I was at the Pacquiao/Clottey fight, most of the fans around the ring were kinda subdued, then Mario Lopez got out of the ring after interviewing someone and dudes were yelling for him like crazy. I couldn't believe it, there were more dudes than girls screaming for him.

I like the unique entrences of boxing. Whether it was a young Mike Tyson walking down to the ring with NO music or simply distorted sound over the loud speakers, Bernard Hopkins walking down to Frank Sinatra's “My Way”, Prince Naseem coming out to Thriller, it show's the individual fighters personality.

Of course some of them are borderline retarded or too over the top, like Roy Jones rapping his own song and having a mini concert or Floyd being carried to the ring by Roman "Gladiators". But that's on the fighter. It's as unique, whacky, cool, or stupid as the fighter wants it to be.

Anyways, here are a few of my favorites:

Mike Tyson vs Spinks (gives me chills)

Hopkins coming out to "America the Beautiful" by Ray Charles (this was the first major sporting event after 9/11). Goosebumps!

Bernard Hopkins "My Way"

Vitali vs Samuel Peter "Heavyweight Legends"

Prince Naseem "Thriller"
