about Rap-A-Lot/Priority and Rap-A-Lot/Noo Trybe releases

as everyone knows, Noo Trybe rereleased all Rap-A-Lot albums that were originally distributed by Priority Records

but some of the "recent" cds seem not to have any priority version
i've got the following ones with Noo Trybe logos on back covers :

CJ Mac-True Game
Menace Clan-Da Hood
Scarface-The Diary
5th Ward Boyz-Rated G

are they original pressings or not?

I just checked my copies and they don't have the PRIORITY RECORDS either...
I'm pretty sure that "Menace Clan" & "Mad CJ Mac" never been re-released so you probably have the Original releases because i have the OG's, i bought them more than 12 years ago when they been dropped...

About "Scarface - The Diary" & "5th Ward Boyz - Rated G", i know they been re-released...and they also been released on "European press"......

Maybe they ain't on PRIORITY RECORDS......???

I just noticed that some others don't have the PRIORITY logo like:

-Mr. 3-2 - The Wicked Buddah Baby.
-5th Ward Juvenilez - Deadly Groundz.
-5th Ward Boyz - Ghetto Dope.
-Blac Monks - No Mercy.
-Convicts.
-Seagram - Reality Check.
-Poppa LQ - My Reality Your Entertainment.

Rap-A-Lot Records was founded in 1986. Only a few of Rap-A-Lots OG albums from 1986 on up to 1991 were re-released on Priority. Examples of this would be:


*Convicts - Convicts
*Choice - The Big Payback (Black and White Cover) - Later Re-Released with Purple/Black and White artwork.
*Ghetto Boys - Making Trouble (Tape/Vinyl Only Release with Blue Script and Different newspaper cover) - Later re-released on on Priority, but spelled Geto Boys instead.
*Ghetto Boys - Grip It On The Other Level - Later re-released with "Geto Boys" spelling on Priority (Re-Released twice with Priority, 1st re-released listed "Gangster Of Love on Tracklist. 2nd didn't list it on the tracklist, but the song was still on the album).


Then in 1991 Rap-A-Lot records started their distribution relationship with Priority Records. This lasted all the way through 1994. So any albums that came out between 1991 and 1994 will have to be distributed by "Priority Records" in order for it to be an true OG version. Any of the above mention albums would have to only say "Rap-A-Lot only" in order for those to be an true OG.

Anything that came out from 1995 to 1997/1998 would be on Noo Trybe, but Noo Trybe did re-release those previous albums as well. There are only a few albums that never ever got re-release by Priority nor Noo Trybe. These albums are:

*Royal Flush - Uh Oh
*Def IV - Nice and Hard
and a couple of vinyl only released that I forgot their name for right now.

I hope that I helped you answer your question. This by far isn't a list of all CD's, Vinyls and tape only release that Rap-A-Lot has, but it does explain why you see some on "Priority" and "Noo Trybe Records". I think that everybody can figure out if they have the OG Rap-A-Lot versions from here though.:cool:

Controversy by Willie D was also re-released by Priority. The OG was released through rap-a-lot only, just as Ghetto Boys' albums. Also, the OG has written: featuring the ghetto boys. The priority re-release has written featuring the geto boys.

Those def IV and royal flush albums should be in any serious RAL record collector.
i think the Diary, menace clan and Mac CJ Mac were originally released on Noo Trybe, because that distribution deal went down during the same period of time that J prince tried to establish a rap-a-lot west spin-off label. I also think rated G was released originally through noo trybe because Noo Trybe has a European distribution deal and you could find rated G on every corner here in Norway back then.

The Diary

The Diary was definately on Priority. I have it. Like I said; anything that came out after 1994 would be Noo Trybe Records. The Diary came out in 1994, so the OG would be the Priority version. Mr. Scarface Is Back (1991), The World Is Yoursn (1993) and The Diary (1994) OG's will be the Priority Records versions. The Menace Clan and CJ Mac came out in 1995, therefore the OG of those will be Noo Trybe as you said.

I am MrMikal. I assumed that it was without realizing the dates and the title on the 5th Ward Boyz. I thought that you were asking about their Gangsta Funk album, not the Rated G. The Rated G is on Noo Trybe, not priority. Which means that it is still the OG though. I do appologize for make that mistake, but I get a million and one questions per day about items that I sale. Sometimes they all become the same after a long day of being asked the same questions day in and day out. Are you doublezproductions?

if that's your copy then it is obviously a re-release because the diary was released before rapalot4life.blogspot.com was created

You got one European version of this one. I just re-checked my Diary and it is the US RAL/Noo Trybe version. I've never seen a Priority version of the diary either and I'd like to see a scan of the cover. Maybe it was a very limited pressing of The Diary right before they made the noo trybe deal? Sincere, you gotta help us with this one since you got the Priority release :cool:
