Miguel Cotto: "I am Sure That I Will Beat Clottey"

WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is sizing up one of his potential opponents for June 13, which may be IBF champion Joshua Clottey. Cotto says it doesn't matter if Clottey is in the other corner, he expects another victory. The tentative plan is for Cotto to return in New York's Madison Square Garden on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

"[If it's Clottey] then we will prepare for Clottey, and one thing I'm sure of - we will leave victorious," Cotto told El Nuevo Dia.

Cotto is expected to sit down with his promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, in the next few days and go over some of his possible options. Clottey, also with Top Rank, is at the top of the list with WBC champion Andre Berto and former champion Kermit Cintron. Cotto tells the paper that several factors will play a role in his final decision.

"I am open to all of the big names and all the champions of the division. When we sit down, the one that seems the best to us, the one that we all agree with and the one that fits the best in the current market - is the one that we are going to take," Cotto said.

Coming off last Saturday's demolition of Michael Jennings, the Puerto Rican star is planning to take about a month off and then quickly head back to the gym on March 21.

"It's so my conditioning does not disappear, so nothing is lost, and with that I'll have an easier and more comfortable camp than the previous one," Cotto said.

Joshua Clottey: "Miguel Cotto Won't Last Twelve Rounds"

IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey is planning to go war if WBO champ Miguel Cotto agrees to fight him on June 13 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Clottey, along with Kermit Cintron and WBC champ Andre Berto, are the three fighters in the running to fight Cotto in June.

Speaking with BoxingScene.com’s Jose Aguirre, Clottey gave his thoughts on the proposed fight. He thought Cotto gave a good account of himself last Saturday when he stopped Michael Jennings in five rounds. But, Clottey says the win was easy because Jennings had no intention of fighting, and ran until Cotto caught up with him.

“He did good, but he fought a nobody. Michael Jennings is a nobody. Cotto looked good, but he's going to need a good defense if he fights with me or Shane Mosley. I have to fight with Cotto. To make a good fight, me and Cotto would be the best. Cotto and Cintron and is not good. They have to try me and see what I can do. I deserve that shot because we have to unify the belts and we are under the same promotional company,” Clottey said.

“There are three fighters [at the top of 147]. Me, Shane Mosley and Cotto. Cotto and Mosley won’t happen so I have to be next.”

Clottey was supposed to fight Cintron on the Cotto-Jennings undercard, but Cintron took more money to move up in weight for a fight with Sergio Martinez. Clottey doesn’t believe it was money that motivated Cintron’s decision.

“They are scared to fight me. They don't want to go to ring and fight me. They keep giving excuses. I'm number four in the world. I'm surprised they don’t want to fight me. This is boxing and the best fight the best. Kermit Cintron is a p*ssy. He don’t want to fight me. He keeps running away. I chased him out of 147 and into 154 - that’s unbelievable,” Clottey said.

Clottey tells BoxingScene that a fight with Cotto will not go the distance. He plans to jump on Cotto early and put him away before the final bell.

“A fight with Cotto is not going to last the full twelve rounds. I promise you because I'm going to jump on him and hit him like crazy. I'm not going to stand there and do nothing. I'm not going to put on running shoes like Michael Jennings. I don’t put on running shoes, I put on boxing shoes and you always have to stand and fight. I'm going to fight him and he’s going to run and he’s not going to beat me - no way. I will stop him if they give me the chance. I am 100% sure,” Clottey said.

Roach is Not Concerned With Ricky Hatton's Body Attack

Trainer Freddie Roach says he is unconcerned over the supposed powerful body shots of Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton who his prized possession, Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao faces in a May 3 showdown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

In an interview with well-known reporter Dyan Castillejo of the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN, Roach said it was “no problem because Ricky Hatton won’t land one body punch. He will miss every shot.”

Roach revealed that he had watched tapes of 20 of Hatton’s previous fights and “studied them extensively and I know how to beat him.”

Pacquiao’s celebrated trainer said Hatton was “slow and made-to-order for Manny.”

Asked by Dyan about Hatton’s reputation to push his opponent, punch and grab Roach replied “if you won’t stand in front of him then he can’t push you.”

Roach was confident that Pacquiao who, in his eyes, “fought perfect fights against David Diaz and Oscar De La Hoya is even better now and I expect at least one more perfect fight.”

Roach predicted that Pacquiao would knock out Hatton “sooner than Floyd Mayweather Jr because Manny is better than Mayweather.” Mayweather scored a tenth round TKO over Hatton in Las Vegas on December 8, 2007.

In a hectic schedule prior to taking a flight to London on Thursday night for a two-stop promotional tour, Pacquiao signed another major endorsement with Vitwater, a product under the RFM Corporation of Joey Concepcion after which he visited his former business manager Rod Nazario at his Wild Card Gym in Sucat, Paranaque, in recognition of his help in steering Pacquiao’s career to new heights from the time he was a 16 year old boy.

Pacquiao was besieged by fans and autograph seekers among whom were Paranaque Vice Mayor Gus Tambunting.

Respected TV boxing analyst Moy Lainez said Pacquiao “looked in good shape and probably weighed around 150-152 pounds” and believed that eight weeks of relentless training at the Wild Card Gym of Roach which is typical of Pacquiao, it would enable him to beat Hatton.

Roach himself had earlier told Castillejo that eight weeks of training was enough even as he joked about Hatton saying “anyway he’ll be 180 pounds.” However, Hatton’s British trainer Lee Beard said that Hatton had begun training prior to going on a two week cruise with his family up to the middle of February and had immediately reported back to the gym in Ashton, just outside his hometown of Manchester and looked much better than he did prior to his previous fights where he had tended to bloat.

In fact Beard said Hatton had cut down on his penchant for lots of junk food and had also drastically reduced his intake of beer.

Rift Growing Between The WBO and Filipino Fighters

The World Boxing Organization continues to bamboozle Filipinos not only with their dime-a-dozen regional titles but also fights for vacant titles and interim titles when there is a champion in a particular weight division.

WBO Asia Pacific head Leon Panoncillo who is based in Bangkok but is a regular visitor to the country because of the number of regional belts the WBO keeps manufacturing recently approved an interim title fight for the organization’s bantamweight title between Rolando Magbanua and Jose Cotta of Mexico.

Magbanua scored an impressive 6th round TKO when the Mexican’s corner three in the towel after the Braveheart boxing stable fighter hammered Cotta into helplessness.

We have now discovered that world-rated Z “The Dream” Gorres, the stylish southpaw from the ALA gym who is looking for fights to stay active and retain his ratings until the situation is cleared and he can get a decent title shot, will fight Mexico’s former IBF minimum weight champion Roberto Carlos Leyva for what has been billed as the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight title.

While Magbanua was fighting Cotta for the interim title the WBO had already sanctioned the Gorres-Levya fight for the vacant title. To add to the confusion the WBO Oriental bantamweight champion Michael Domingo who won the vacant title with a 2nd round KO of Indonesia’s Rivo Rengkung on July 26, 2008 and successfully defended his title with a smashing 9th round TKO over former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand , has apparently decided to relinquish his title to make way for Gorres so his stable-mate who is ranked No. 3 super flyweight can hopefully break into the top ten rankings of the WBO bantamweight division should he win the oriental title.

What is even more inexplicable is how Mexicans such as Leyva and Cotta can by any stretch of the imagination fight for an Oriental title.

The Games and Amusements Board which is mandated to supervise and control the sport and maintain its integrity does seem intent on exercising its responsibilities and has allowed the WBO and some local promoters to get away with what amounts to re-writing world geography and taking Filipino boxing fans for granted.

But the Philippines is not the only country party to this charade. Even Australia apparently condones it.

On the same night that Magbanua was mauling a Mexican to win the WBO Oriental bantamweight interim title and Gorres faces another Mexican for the same vacant title, boxrec.com reported that Australian Lance Gostelow won a twelve round unanimous decision over Thailand’s Somchai Nakbalee to grab the WBO Oriental light welterweight title raising the obvious question as to when Australia became a part of the orient.

As respected lawyer and boxing historian Atty Ed Tolentino has pointed out these organizations exist mainly to milk promoters of sanction fees and it seems that for Leon Panoncollo the more titles he can conjure up and the more the geographical realities can be ignored, the better financially for the organization.

Barker Challenges Duddy For Froch-Taylor Undercard

Commonwealth middleweight champ, “Dazzling” Darren Barker has challenged John Duddy to earn a shot at World champion, Kelly Pavlik.

Barker’s promoter Mick Hennessy has offered the New York based Irishman the chance to challenge Barker for his Commonwealth title on the undercard of the Carl Froch – Jermain Taylor fight on the East Coast of the U.S. on either April 18th or 25th April and it’s a fight Barker would relish.

“John’s obviously a very popular guy over there,” said Barker. “But I believe there’s more to being a fighter than selling tickets and while there is a talk of a fight with Kelly Pavlik I don’t think John has earned that chance yet. I’m a traditionalist and I believe you should earn those kind of fights in the ring and not in the box office.

“I’d love to defend my title against Duddy. I think it would be a cracking fight with two unbeaten guys from this side of the Atlantic going at it on that side of the pond. I know that Mick Hennessy has spoken to his management and while they were keen to fight on the card I don’t think they’re all that keen on the idea of fighting me.”

The London stylist believes Duddy’s current reputation is the product of careful matchmaking and clever marketing and questions if there is any substance behind the hype.

“To be honest John’s opposition to date has been very much hand picked, fighting a collection of guys that were either well past their best or weren’t much to begin with in the first place. If he steps up and fights me he’d face a very different type of opponent. I believe I’m a world class fighter and I think by the end of the year I’ll be knocking on the door of a world title fight myself but I want to make sure I’ve earned that right first.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy said, “I’ve had talks with Duddy’s management and they’re looking to fight in late April but I’m not interested in watching Duddy fighting another faded veteran and I find it hard to believe that his own fans are either.

“I think it’s time Duddy stepped up to fight a dangerous, unbeaten fighter and prove he belongs at world level. I’m offering him the chance to do just that in April against Barker in what would effectively be a home town fight for Duddy.”

Hmmm, cotto vs clottey is a tough one to call. Clottey is big and strong like margarito, but he's less relentless and goes into that winky wright type of shell defense a lot. If Cotto can survive all 12 rounds I think he'll get the decision based on him being more active and clottey covering up for most of the fight. But clottey is huge, he's like a middleweight. Actually he said he fought diego corrales he came in the ring weighing 170+!!

Jorge Barrios - "Valero is a Long Haired Prostitute and a communist."

There is a good reason why lightweight contender Jorge Barrios (47-4-1, 34 KOs) is being tagged with the nickname of "Ricardo Mayorga Lite." During Monday's press conference to announce Golden Boy's April 4 pay-per-view, called Lightweight Lightning," Barrios was his usual wild self and took part in a war of words with undefeated Edwin Valero (24-0, 24KOs).

In the manner that Barrios confronted Valero, you would think the two of them were fighting on the card. Not so. Barrios faces Carlos Hernandez on the undercard, while Valero is the main event with Antonio Pitalua. The confrontation started when Valero was on the podium addressing the media. Valero began talking about how half the fighters on the card would not make it [not naming anyone in particular] and Barrios took offense.

According to several witnesses to the confrontation, Valero's comment about "taking over the division" is probably what set Barrios off. He would quickly begin a verbal assault, and Valero tried his best to ignore it. Barrios continued to press the issue and it didn't take long before the two of them were trading insults in a face to face manner. Others would quickly jump in before the situation could turn physical.

The stage for Valero's next fight was possibly set. Provided that Valero and Barrios are able to win their respective bouts, don't be surprised if the two of them were fighting each other in the near future.

When contacted for comment, Barrios would tell BoxingScene.com that Valero would indeed be his next target……well not exactly in those words.

"Valero is a long-haired prostitute and a communist. After I finish with Famoso, I will beat the sh*t out of Valero. Then I will cut his hair and make him into a man," Barrios said.

Yeah dude is a huge ass rock but i think cotto with his speed and timing can win a decision... if he survives

For some reason im thinking they are going to go with cintron ...two puerto ricans going at it before the day of the parade makes sense. I dont want to see that fight personaly. Cintron does nothing for Cottos carrer. plus cintron will probably just whine through out the fight.

The fight i want to see is Cotto VS Berto

Yeah Cintron's stock dropped a lot after that shit performance he just had. I gave him the benefit of the doubt too after he lost to Margarito twice and I was cheering for him, but I learned my lesson, the guy is mentally unstable and has no confidence.

Berto vs Cotto would be war

If he wins he will have a lot of options (he doesn't necessarily need to fight the winner of the tournament since they are talking about making his upcoming fight for the Vacant WBO belt), so he could possibly fight Joan Guzman assuming Guzman wins his upcoming fight for a Vacant belt (I think IBF) or he could fight the winner of Marquez/Diaz.
