Backstory:

Lathan Williams (born 1975 in Vallejo, California), better known by his stage name Young Lay, is a San Francisco Bay Area-based gangsta rapper.

He has worked with artists such as label mate Ray Luv, Tupac Shakur and Mac Dre.

Lay’s career took off when his single ‘All About My Feeti,’ appeared on volume one of the ‘New Jersey Drive’ soundtrack in 1995. The soundtrack linked Lay to more established names on the East Coast rap scene, Biggie, Queen Latifah and Outkast. The record went gold and Lay signed on with Atlantic Records.

The same year, an attempt was made on Lay's life via a drive-by when he was shot in the head while stopped at a Vallejo traffic light as a passenger in a friend's car. Although critically injured, Lay survived and went on to resume rapping after extensive therapy for brain damage in which he had to learn to speak again. It was the second time Lay had been shot. He had been shot in the back when he was younger.

A few months later, Lay would plead no contest and was fined $170 for possession for less than an ounce of marijuana. 3 weeks later, the D.A. charged him with felony drug possession for which he was convicted and put on probation.

A few months later, police reported finding three rocks of cocaine weighing just over a half of gram in Lay’s mouth. He pleaded not guilty and posted the $7,500 in bail to get out of jail. While out on probation, he was cited for possessing an open container of alcohol in a car. He was sentenced to five years probation and one year in jail and required to complete a drug treatment program.

Later that year, Lay would become a new father, his girlfriend Daphne Boyden gave birth to their son, Le-Zhan.

A month later in May, Daphne Boyden was shot and burned to death by two 15-year old fellow high school students and her baby was kidnapped.

Police theorized, someone set fire to Daphne’s corpse to cover up the crime.

Six years later, acting on an anonymous tip, Vallejo police recovered Le-Zhan Williams, the son of Young Lay. Police arrested 22-year old Latasha Brown (murder and kidnap) and her cousin Ocianetta Williams (murder and kidnap) and Latasha’s mother Delores Ann Brown (for aiding and abetting). All pictured above.

The police say Latasha Brown had a forged birth certificate, claiming she was Le-Zhan’s mother. Police suspect Brown’s aunt, a Texas nurse, may have altered the birth certificate.

According to witness testimony, Daphne Boyden was nursing her infant son when Latasha Brown leaned over the couch, hugged her good-bye and shot her.

Although the police say there is no clear motive in the case, they suspect a connection between Latasha Brown and the baby’s father (Young Lay). There’s some speculation that Brown had a relationship with the father Lathan Williams and that she had been jealous of Daphne Boyden’s relationship and the fact that she had a child with him, especially with ‘Young Lay’ being famous, and her intent was to take the child away.

After DNA confirmed Le-Zhan’s identity, he was reunited with his family.

Latasha Brown was convicted and sentenced to 37 years to life in prison.

Ocianetta Williams was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Delores Brown received a year in jail in 2003 for helping to conceal the kidnapped child.

Sadly, ‘Young Lay’s’ career derailed and he was sentenced to a 12 year prison sentence for armed robbery.

He was released from prison in 2010.

It's been awhile since I have heard anyone mention his name. Once every now and then I still throw on the "Black 'n Dangerous" at my coffee table while drinking and reminiscing. It is easily one of my favorites of all time, up there with P.T.S.'s "All Frames...." It just seems like yesterday when I heard about all this bad shit going down with his lady and child. It still sounds just as fucked up now as it did back then!

My sons, nephews and young cousins seem intrigued when I introduce them to classic Bay Area music like this. They always say they never knew music like this existed and how they wish they didn't miss out on it. It is funny because my younger son plays mostly hip-hip/rap from the 90's around the time he was born.

I used to bump that "Black N' Dangerous" on cassette. And I remember watching Young Lay's story on "Unsolved Mysteries." I seriously tripped when I saw that. Which he ended up titling his second album.

I remember back in the mid to late 90's when computers & internet was still rare to people's homes. I used to use the internet at the local library. It was a room full of computers and people all the time. Limit use was one hour, so I'd go in with a plan to get updated on the most shit I could. One day I went in looking for Young Lay albums. I forget how this happened, but I remember typing "Young Lay" and it opened up a porn site LOL! I quickly tried to get out of it, but computers were still slow as shit back then.

I later had to explain who Young Lay was to the librarian LOL!

Dude is weird as fuck. When Marissa was living @ my house, she invited him over & he showed up in the middle of the night. I cussed him out & sent him on his way. A few weeks after I threw her out, he showed up again in the middle of the night. I swear people 4 blocks away had to hear my going the fuck off on him. Two days later, he showed up again in the middle of the night. After I told his slow ass the bitch don't live there & to stay the fuck awaway from my house. I ended up having to make a phone call to get the pop up visits to stop.
