(05-07) 22:28 PDT OAKLAND -- A suspected thief being taken to jail somehow escaped from the back of an Oakland patrol car on Monday evening, police said.
Christopher Moss, 19, was being driven to a downtown Oakland jail when he bolted from the back of the police car near Seventh and Jefferson streets about 7:45 p.m., authorities said.
"I just had a prisoner break out of my patrol car," the officer reported on the radio.
Asked by another officer if the suspect was still handcuffed, the befuddled officer replied, "No, negative. I haven't figured out how he did it, but the cuffs are sitting in the back seat of my car."
The officer was taking Moss to the Glenn E. Dyer Detention Facility, which is just blocks from Oakland police headquarters, for investigation of attempted burglary and possession of stolen property.
Moss is described as black, 6 feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with a mustache and medium complexion. He was last seen running north on Jefferson while wearing a blue T-shirt and blue jeans.
