A night that began with a group of friends getting together for drinks ended with an accusation of rape, two men in jail for investigation of assault and a third man in a coma.
Issaquah police are still trying to sort out the events from early Sunday, which have not yet resulted in criminal charges.
Officers were called to a home in the 400 block of Northeast Birch Street around 2 a.m. Sunday in response to a report of a rape. When they arrived they found a 31-year-old Kirkland man suffering from a severe head injury, police said. He had a "large laceration on his head and obvious injuries to his face," according to police.
The injured man is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to court documents.
The others present accused the injured man of raping the female member of the group.
The two men who allegedly attacked him were arrested on investigation of first-degree assault and booked into the King County Jail. One of the men is the husband of the alleged rape victim, police said.
Police did not release information on whether the alleged rape victim underwent a physical examination.
Police said the group of acquaintances had gathered at the home in Issaquah on Saturday night and then went out to a local bar.
The alleged rape victim, a Bellevue woman, left the bar early and returned to the residence because she felt sick, police said.
The 31-year-old man also left the bar before the others and returned to the home, police said.
At some point, the Bellevue woman called her husband or another friend and reported that the 31-year-old Kirkland man had raped her, police said.
Police said the woman's husband, 31, of Bellevue, and his 30-year-old friend, who lives in the house where the attacks occurred, returned to the residence.
They found the other man — the alleged rapist — asleep on the couch, according to police. When he woke up, the husband hit him in the head with a brick and the other man struck him with a rubber mallet, police said.
The mallet, which was recovered inside the residence, "was broken and had blood on it," according to police.
The two assault suspects have not yet been charged in connection with the case, according to prosecutors. They have been released from custody pending further investigation, prosecutors said.
Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, said his office is reviewing the case and a charging decision has not yet been made.
Charges are also pending against the alleged rape suspect, who has not been interviewed by police because of his injuries, police said.
