thought id make a thread on nuthin but tips/ for photoshop..
anyone can contribute if u feel..

Creating better gradients/drop shadows for press.

to get a better gradient / drop shadows its recommended to use the noise filter so there is no banding when ur work is printed...

(banding is visible line where one color meets the other that comes up when u dont use the noise filter)

*edit
u will see slight grain on ur screen but when its sent to press it will not appear

^ Nice tip.

If I can toss one in regarding photos, a super quick way to make your photos look more crisp is to go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask. Usually the default settings are just enough to add that extra amount of clarity. DO NOT OVER USE.

Some old tips I had on another board plus two tuts, must of it's for making sigs but you can apply it to covers and everything else too:
Here's some tips I thought of to help you guys out, I'll be adding new ones every now and then. If you post this on another website please atleast give a lil credit.

SHORTCUT KEYS
ctrl+J = Duplicate layer
ctrl+C = Copy
ctrl+V = Paste
ctrl+X = Cut
ctrl+N = New Document
ctrl+shift+N = New Layer
ctrl+T = Transform(change the size of currently selected layer)
ctrl+U = Hue/Saturation
ctrl+S = Save
ctrl+shift+S = Save As
ctrl+; = Hide/Show Rulers
ctrl+Y = Change setting from CMYK to RGB and visa-versa
ctrl+A = Select All
ctrl+D = Dis select
ctrl+Z = Undo(press again to redo)
ctrl+alt+Z = Undo again
ctrl+O = Open
ctrl+shift+O = Browse
ctrl+alt+O = Open As

TIPS
-To make a PSD blend better try duplicating the render a few times and smudging it different ways with different layer styles and brushes. Also try changing the color of certain parts of the render. To do this make a copy of the PSD, erase everything except the part you want to change colors(ex:everything but the shirt) then press "ctrl+u" and you'll get the Hue window. Check the preview button and play around with that window to see what you like.

-For a more accurate border, select all then go to modify>border and set it to like 2 or 3 then fill it in with the paint bucket and a color of your choice.

-For another(better) border:
1. Make a new layer and press ctrl+a
2. Go to Edit>Stroke
3. Make it 6px and black
4. Then do it again but with 4px and white(same layer)
5. And again with 2px black
6. Now play with the the layer options(try overlay)

-To resize something and not have it go out proportion hold down "shift" while moving a corner box.

-To make text appear better, add a stroke. To do this double click on the text's layer(or got to the layer's blending options) and click to stroke. You can even make a double stroke. Put a stroke on your first text layer then duplicate that layer(ctrl+J) and make the back layer's stroke a couple px's bigger and a different color.

-Don't be afraid to play around with different fonts(www.dafont.com).

-Visit websites such as DeviantArt and download some brushes to get some good effects.

-Wanna make your own pattern? Here's how you can, make a new document with a size of 5x5 px. Use the pencil tool and make a design(ex:squares or dots). Then when you have what you want go to Edit>Define pattern.

-Wanna make your own brush? Get the PSD you want to be a brush and go to Edit>Define Brush Preset.

-You really wanna stay away from using the default filter settings. People can tell when it's just one or two filters added on and will probably call you a "noob" haha.

-Not just for filters too. You want to avoid using default settings for mostly everything.
-Use gradient maps/photo filters set to different styles.
