I'm only talking about it since you said Taylor "beat" Hopkins. He did beat him. Total number of punches landed doesn't matter when you give away a ton of rounds. Hopkins was coming on, but gave up too many. He lost man, time to get over it.
Dude, I moved on almost 10 years ago, u brought it up and keep talking about it. I don't think Taylor did enough to win 7 rounds thus my quotation marks. Simple as that. Has nothing to do with this thread.

I just don't agree. Would you feel better if they didn't agree to a catchweight and both came in at 155 anyway? He'd have beaten the man that beat the man, which is all that matters. Mine, yours or anyone else's opinion on Cotto talents won't change that.
No I wouldn't feel any better because they aren't middleweights and won't be fighting any middleweights. Like I said, if Floyd (or Pac for that matter) beat a guy they already beat just at a higher weight class it would feel really cheap for them to be considered THE middleweight champion of the world (without having to fight any middleweights).

If you want to be upset about the lineage, be upset with Martinez and his camp giving a crack at the lineal title at an undeserving challenger from another weight class and putting it in this position.
I have been. I've been saying Martinez needs to fight GGG for like two years now.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this man. I get what you're saying and obviously I don't think it would be an ideal situation, but I'm not as outraged or upset by it as you. If Mayweather or Pac happened to fight Cotto in a scheduled championship fight at a weight considered middleweight and win, then I'd have no problem acknowledging what they've just accomplished.

I don't think we disagree on that they shouldn't get a chance to fight for it cause that I agree with, it's just if they do fight and win it I wouldn't be able to consider a cheap win or any less legitimate of an accomplishment.

I'm not outraged lol just annoyed by the possible scenario.

If Mayweather or Pacquiao beat Cotto there is no way I could honestly recognize them as the true middleweight King, lineal or not. Thats why I say it would be a cheap accomplishment (they already beat the guy before the weight doesn't matter). Im sure Floyd could beat Cotto all the way up to cruiserweight.

If Cotto wins the lineal cruiserweight title, which would be impressive cause he'd have to get himself ranked 1 or 2 and then win a fight against the other 1 or 2, and Floyd weighed in at 176 and whooped Cotto's ass I'd acknowledge it.

I wouldn't respect it if they both met at 155 and fought for some garbage vacant title that was basically issued to the fight for some sanctioning fees. This is different IMO.

naner12 @naner12 is correct. Even if this fight there was no catchweight, which I believe it was Martinez who asked for it, Cotto would have came in at 155 anyways. Roach said that as soon as the fight was signed. Now, it's already announced that Cotto is coming back on December to fight in Vegas or back at MSG. So GGG is being thought about by HBO. HBO is trying to make sure the champ is an HBO fighter so Mayweather is out the pic. And don't forget Floyd said his next ppv will be all TMT and Cotto would want his fighters to be showcased real heavy so that won't happen. Read between the lines people and there goes your opponent. Cotto vs GGG

Martinez vs Cotto was at a 159 pound catch weight, at the request of Cotto. I have zero problem with that.
B @battle619 , does Cotto have any obligation to HBO or Top Rank? As far as I'm aware he doesn't.

It would be awesome if he fights GGG, I just don't see it happening.

Yes, Cotto has Cotto promotions under TR with UniMas and HBO. And from what was said in interviews is Cotto would only fight at 154, but Martinez wanted that fight so Martinez asked for the catchweight. Martinez disagreed with fighting at 154 cuz he can't run like that anymore. Both Cotto and Martinez said it.

If Cotto beats Gennady Golovkin and takes his WBO Super Middle Weight belt where does that place him at in reference to the "generations best"? His only ligit losses are against Floyd, Trout and Pacquaio...with Trout I believe in a rematch he would KO Austin...With Pacquiao at THIS stage in his career Manny would be stopped...and lastly I believe Cotto could give Mayweather some issues but he is just not physically gifted enough to get over the hump. Should Cotto fight Canelo...ASAP...this could be and would be the closet fight ever seen and maybe one of the best ever.

Here you can see originally the fight was set for the full 160:

Martinez vs Cotto negotiations include no catchweight, full 160 pound limit - Bad Left Hook

"Martinez adviser Sampson Lewkowicz says that there will be no catchweight for the fight if it does happen."

But then Team Cotto including 159 catchweight in the contract:

*Martinez's advisor, Sampson Lewkowicz, was somewhat perturbed by the path of the negotiations, which included the fight being billed "Cotto-Martinez," and the contracted notion of catchweight of 159 pounds.

"Sergio always makes 159 pounds, easily. So when we saw that they wanted to negotiate 159 pounds as a 'catchweight,' then I can call that 'stupidity,' because Sergio is always at 159 when he's in shape. I don't know what their agenda is to call it a catchweight," said Lewkowicz.

Miguel Cotto-Sergio Martinez done for June 7 at MSG - Ring TV

"Regarding the catchweight, the 159lbs limit was something just to get under Martinez skin. Martinez felt disrespected and I think that is going to make it a more intense and interesting fight" - Bob Aurm

Golovkin doesn't have anything at SMW. I'm pretty sure he's never even fought above 160 as a pro.
Golovkin is the "Super Champion" in the Middleweight division of 160 lbs for the WBA...Andre Ward is the "Super Champion" @ 168 lbs of the Super Middle Weight division for the WBA. that's what I should have said in regards to pinpointing what Cotto vs Golovkin would be for.

I guess if we're being technical they refer to it as the "Super World" and it's a ridiculous distinction so that they could vacate the regular title and have 2 guys fight for the vacant world title while they have a "super world" champion.

Yep. Looks like WBA has ordered Danny Jacobs vs Fletcher for the "regular" title. I don't know who's worse, the WBA or WBC.

That's a good point. That's exactly what happened with Pacquiao/Margarito for Pacquiao's "8th" division title.

Boxing politics...Pacquiao who lost 2 straight fights KO'd in 1 of those fights...then gets a tune up with a lightweight in Rios...gets ranked #1 contender...his next fight is with the champion Timothy Bradley. Cotto lost 2 straight fights with Mayweather and Trout...takes a tune up with Rodriguez and his next fight is a Championship fight with Sergio at 160 lbs. Trout has lost 2 straight fights...Canelo and Lara...he will fight a tune up...if he wins...he won't be sniffing any championship fight...if Donare had lost his last fight making it 2 in a row...even with a tune up...I think he would be out of the picture...

If Mayweather lost 2 fights then won a tune up fight...he would be back in the championship hunt ASAP...these 3 fighters have names and PPV numbers that trump fairness.
