Don't Buy a Playstation 2 network adapter

If you buy one of those network adapters for your PS2, your getting ripped off. I saw SCOCIOUS, had already mentioned this, but I don't think anyone saw it. You can go buy a USB 10/100 ethernet adapter from any computer store & get online just like all the people using the sony adapter. Here is a list of compatible USB adapters:

I hope this helps a lot of you that are trying to get online and keep some ass. You'll find that these are much cheaper then the $40 for the sony one... You'll probably spend anywhere from $10 to $30 for one.

OK, so, here's the deal.

Only SOME PS2 network games support USB ethernet adapters, and usually only the pegasus chipset (which is most of the cheaper adapters). You take the USB-ethernet adapter, and plug it into the front of the PS2, There's two bigger ports and one little port... You plug it into one of the two bigger ports, and then you set up the network shit in the game...

Beware, only games built with SN Systems NDK ( http://www.snsystems.com/PlayStation2/ndk.htm ) will support USB network adapters... (and Tony hawk 3 and 4)

All PS2 games that support online play will work with the Sony Network Adapter.

Why is it $40?

It's $40, because not only is it an ethernet adapter, but it is ALSO a 56K V.90 modem (which may or may not be updated to V.92) AND a harddrive controller.

So, for $40, you're pretty much assured that it will work as long as you own your working PS2, and that it will work with the Harddrive when it's released later. (People are estimating that it will be released when the USA online version of Final Fantasy XI comes out soon.)

If you wanna cheap out and go with a USB-network adapter, that's your choice, but be forewarned that it may not work with all of the online games.

I also hope people don't misunderstand and think this is a modem. You can only hook the usb adapter to DSL & Cable. Can anyone name any games that play online but can't use the usb adapters? I don't know of any... and nobody has said any names of any that don't work.

if you want to take the risk... check out www.pricewatch.com for some cheap prices in your area. theres a lot of bay area retailers that might be in your city. you can just take your happy ass there and buy it for cheap.

If you use a USB to connect it will be slower. USB is SLOWER than a straight Ethernet connection. You will will only get about half or 2/3 of what you can with a regular Ethernet card.

My usb adapter is getting better connect speeds then the sony one... My shit plays with no delay when playing an oppenent with a good connect as well.
