Hitler’s last stand
On 16 December 1944 the Germans started their ARDENNES OFFENSIVE. The night before the battle, Hitler sent in troops to infiltrate allied soldieries at the front. These Nazis spoke perfect English and were in English uniforms making it easy for the not to be notice. After a few days of fighting Hitler was out on a successful foot but not for long. The 17th of December 72 American POW’s (prisoner of war) were caught and slaughter. This outraged the allies and on December 23, Americans began their first counterattack on the southern flank of the Ardennes "bulge”. The fight got increasingly intense day to weeks. the Germanys are become more and more weaker due to the harshness of the cold and grimy weather. Germans were doomed due to their lack of supplies. Tanks, cars, and jeeps that just up ran out of gas were left behind. Allied forces captured whole nazi groups because of these lack of resources . It was no secret that the Germans were going to give up soon. January 28th ,1945 the struggle was officially over, when the original line in Ardennes (A plateau region of northern France, southeast Belgium, and northern Luxembourg east and south of the Meuse River) was restored. It is said to have been the largest land battle that occurred over World War 2. There were more then a million soldiers altogether fighting against each other during this battle. American soldiers, had approximately 81,000 casualties, 23,554 captured, and 19,000 killed.1400 British had 200 killed and Germany received 100, 000 men who were either killed, wounded, or captured.
