The Red Badge of Courage:
Why people consider this a Classic

The Red Badge of Courage

When Stephen Crane wrote the Red Badge of Courage in 1895, it became an instant classic novel. During the story, Crane expertly described what it was like to be in the middle of a great Civil War battle, face down an enemy, who is trying to bill you and grapple with bravery and cowardice in the face of mortal danger. Astonishingly, he did this at the age of 24, six (6) years after the war had ended and have never been in a battle. Veterans of the civil War were astound at the realistic descriptions of the battle and were amazed to find the author never served in the army or war. It is because of its underlying themes and great writing that brought this novel the critical recognition it has received over the last 100 years.

According to general Alexander C. McClurg, the realism of this story and battles were solely based entirely on unreality. General MClurg also goes on to say that the youth is a young ignorant and stupid country lad that doesn’t have a trace of patriotic bone in his body. Not only did he say there was no story to the book but also it made nascence for why the youth went to the army in the first place. Not only does general McClure go on to continually give reason why he doesn’t like the book he state that the battles in the story were full of confusion and nonsense havoc. A point he makes is the only true red badge of courage if you want to call it that in the story is when another solider with his gun strikes the youth in the head. Mcclurg also talks about the dialog in which they speak in. he calls it an unheard-of jargon. At the end of the Generals review he tells how no intelligent orders are given nor are any smart moves made. He ends saying the is disrespect to any of the quiet, self-respecting, and patriotic men, who really fought in these battles. In his very last paragraph he ask the question “Why is this such a good book?” he answers it saying it isn’t for the simple reason every good war story needs to have troops that are respectful and have order from a good lieutenant not the dumb stupid ones in this book. He recommends no one to read this book and regrets reading it himself.

According to Lesley Pallathumadom, Henery Fleming (the youth) started out as a cowardice man but by the end of the story he didn’t change much. She believes that the youth has changed a bit by the end of the story. Pallsthumadom says he has clarity of all his failures and has found a sense of assurance and confidence. She then stares although he has changed he is not a hero. Lesley makes a great point by saying he never actually fights the enemy. He spends the story have a conflict in himself over his fear. And at story’s end he realizes he’s just a pawn being used but nature. In the traditional sense she says he is a hero by debunking the heroism war and that he earned his red badge for being in battle. Although she gives him credit for in a way evolving into a character and says its wonderful how crane incorporated two different styles of writing into the book. She ends saying “although man has no agency as is given few any choices in light, he succeeded at what he was “that” into and has gained experience in doing so.

In the opinion of Janet Williams The Red Badge Of Courage is a great book for someone who is going to the armed forces. She says the reason why this is a great thing to read is it shows how Henry this is a great thing to read is it shows how Henry conquered his fears of going to war. For instance when the youth was in the first fight he ran away. But since know one knew he ran away he had his pride. Unlike the loud solider who said he wouldn’t run but he did and was caught. When the youth got back to his infantry his whole demeanor changed. He felt confident and brave although he did nothing. He was talking a lot but he knew nothing. He later came on to realize he was confident and could anything.

As you can see in the three reviews there are people out their who like and dislike this book. This essay gives you thee point of views of both the like and dislike of the book. This gives the essay a better review of the book to gives a good/bad.
