GARY RUSSELL JR. STAKES HIS CLAIM AS MANDATORY TO WBO FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
By Press Release | October 14, 2013

Featherweight Gary Russell, Jr. (Capitol Heights, Md.) has been designated as the mandatory challenger for the WBO Featherweight title and he looks forward to challenging the WBO champion for the title belt.

"On October 9th, my team received written confirmation from the WBO that I am the mandatory challenger for their featherweight world title," Russell said. "I'm ready for my first world title fight and cannot wait for the fight to get made."

Russell, who owns two unanimous decision victories in 2013, has been ranked second in the WBO's featherweight rankings since March. The 2008 Olympian recorded his first victory of the year in early March, setting a Compubox record for defensive brilliance in a one-handed win over Vyacheslav Gusev. His second victory came in August with a 10-round win over Juan Ruiz.

An undefeated professional and highly decorated amateur, Russell is known for having the fastest hands in boxing and one-punch knockout power. He's racked up 23 victories in his four years in the pro ranks and looks forward to stepping up his level of opposition in his first title fight.

The WBO has ordered that Russell must be given a shot at their featherweight title within the next 180 days.

SERGIO MARTINEZ: "A FIGHT WITH MIGUEL...THE ONLY OUTCOME I COULD SEE WOULD BE A LATE KO OF COTTO"
By Percy Crawford | October 14, 2013

"I'm am interested in fighting only big fights and a fight with Miguel would be a grand event...I thought Cotto did what he was supposed to do and was completely dominant versus an opponent who was hand picked for him...It would be a very tough fight as Cotto always comes very prepared, but the only outcome I could see would be a late KO of Cotto," stated middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who shared his thoughts on a potential showdown with multi-division world champion Miguel Cotto. Check it out!

PC: How are you doing, Sergio? You getting better physically?

SM: I feel great. My rehab has been excellent and I have been going back to the gym to do light cardio and getting myself re-acclimated to getting back into working out daily.

PC: Obviously the talk of the boxing world is a Martinez/Cotto fight. Is that something that you are interested in?

SM: I'm am interested in fighting only big fights and a fight with Miguel would be a grand event.

PC: Did you have a chance to watch Miguel Cotto's fight against Delvin Rodriguez, and if so, what did you think of his performance?

SM: I thought Cotto did what he was supposed to do and was completely dominant versus an opponent who was hand picked for him.

PC: Do you think Freddie Roach made a difference in Cotto, or that he just had the right opponent in front of him?

SM: Freddie Roach is an amazing trainer, but I believe Cotto had the right opponent in front of him.

PC: Stylistically, how do you see a fight between you and Miguel Cotto playing out?

SM: It would be a very tough fight as Cotto always comes very prepared, but the only outcome I could see would be a late KO of Cotto.

PC: Would that be a fight contested at 160 if it were to happen?

SM: That would be up to my team to negotiate.

PC: Another guy you recently faced just got what some would consider a generous decision. Do you think Bryan Vera defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.?

SM: I believe Bryan Vera did enough to win that fight. It is unfortunate what happened because that win could've been life changing for Vera.

PC: Obviously Chavez Jr. has dedication problems to the sport. At this point, do you think he could correct those problems or is it too late in your opinion?

SM: He can correct them and can be a future champion, but he needs the proper guidance and needs to take the sport seriously.

PC: When are you targeting your comeback, Sergio?

SM: My plan is to come back the earliest in April.

PC: Thanks for your time. I wish you a very speedy recovery and ring return. Is there anything else you want to add?

SM: I want to thank my fans for all of their continued support and next year will be a very big year for me, my company Maravillbox, and Team Maravilla. Thank you.

How does that article not even mention who the WBO title holder is? Lol! It's Orlando Salido, who is set to fight Lomachenko. I guess Russell gets a shot at the winner.

The World Boxing Organization has made #2 WBO Gary Russell Jr. (23-0, 13 KO’s) the mandatory challenger to WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido, and given him 180 days to fight him. If Salido hasn’t faced Russell Jr. by that time then they will likely strip him of his title. Salido has permission to take an optional title defense against Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko on January 25th, but the winner of that fight must face Russell Jr. by April 12th.

Waiting on ESPN and Yahoo.

Few things we see so far: only Boxing Scene, has accurately imo, added Danny Garcia. Pacquiao is on all lists. Broner and Canelo, Golden Boy fighters, only appear on Golden Boy's owned Ring Magazine list.

Zab Judah Doesn't Rule Out Adrien Broner

By Bill "Two Scoops" Emes
Former two-division world champion Zab "Super" Judah (42-8, 29KOs) is friends with WBA welterweight king Adrien Broner (27-0, 22KOs), but that friendship would not stand in the way of a potential showdown at 147-pounds. Judah returns on December 7th against Paulie Malignaggi at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. A week later, Broner will defend his world title against Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Judah wants to use his fight with Malignaggi as a springboard to a bigger opportunity with one of the lucrative names in his weight division, like Broner
"I'm King Kong. I'm Godzilla. I am boxing. I'm the best at 147-pounds. I'm confident. I'm hungry. I'm strong, my hands are lightning fast. There has still not been a fight where people have said 'Zab's hands have not been fast.' That's never been a question. My hands are still fast, my power is still great. Adrien Broner is a young friend of mine. I have a lot of respect for him and he has a lot of respect for me. But we are warriors, this is what we do," Judah told BoxingScene.com.
"I look at this fight with Paulie as the Roman days, where there is only going to be one king and that king is me. No disrespect to no other fighter out there [at welterweight] but when it comes to 147-pounds - I'm back."

Juan Manuel Marquez Is Leaning Towards Retirement

By Rene Umanzor

Juan Manuel Marquez, 40-years-old and winner of titles in four weight divisions, appears to be leaning towards retirement after suffering a twelve round split decision loss to undefeated WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
After knocking out Manny Pacquiao in their fourth meeting last December, Marquez planned to retire and his family was pressuring him to walk away, but his wife gave him permission to pursue a fifth world crown from Bradley.

"It is difficult [to continue] and even more so with these kind of situations in which some appreciate one thing, others something else. I have to think and believe that the decision to retire was made ever since I beat Manny Pacquiao, but I wanted to try to go that fifth title. My family [wanted me to retire] and I told them to give me a final chance, but now they want me to be completely devoted to them and I think they need me. I got the chance [to win the fifth world title], it wasn't the result I expected but I'm happy with my performance. I fought an opponent who didn't want to fight and I faced an opponent who knew he would win if it went to a decision," Marqiez said.
