It has been said that Haymon could take over boxing and, with his connects outside of boxing, I can see him developing a network/channel that offers ppv or something more organized than the current state of boxing. They would be short on content for a bit since hbo and show have the rights to a shitload of fights, but his actions are coming at a time when the powers that be can't get it together so fuck it. Do your thing, Haymon.

I wouldve figured they needed to hit atleast half a mill but again not sure what they expected. Just sounds a bit low for a PPV. Got Em!!

350,000 x $55 ($50 non HD, $60 HD) = $19,250,000. Half that goes to cable/satellite = $9,625,000. Plus a sellout crowd of 14,000 and gross around $2.5 million for the gate = $12,125,000. Some of that goes to Showtime, some to golden boy, some to Canelo.

Canelo will earn a guaranteed $1.25 million plus 80% of the fight’s net after expenses (Angulo is guaranteed $750,000 with a very small upside on the PPV revenue). Alvarez will bank around $6 million if the fight can attract 300,000 PPV buys says Schaefer. With expenses already covered at that point, Canelo’s payday will soar if a bigger audience tunes in.

$6 million is a huge purse for a non title fight coming off a loss. I don't know how much money you think guys are making but you exclude the top four (PBF, Pac, Cotto, Klitchko), the top guys are getting a couple mil or so at most. Only on PPV can you make more than that since HBO/SHO aren't going to dish out ridiculous purses. HBO for example for a really really good fight they aren't going to want to spend more than $4 mil for the total purse (they still paying for the undercard too, licensing fees, etc).

Those are really solid numbers. To put that in perspective, I think Manny Pacquiao's highest numbers before fighting De La Hoya were against JMM in the 2nd fight and they did less than 400k buys if I remember correctly. And Pacquiao was already a worldwide superstar by then. We've had a lot less PPV's in the last few years than the few years before it so most of the numbers we've heard were Pacquiao and Mayweather related. Those are really solid numbers for 2 guys that don't even speak English

Adonis Stevenson says he’s not afraid of Hopkins
March 14th, 2014 | Post Comment - 36 Comments

By Allan Fox: In response to 49-year-old IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO’s) making a big deal about supposedly being in his head mentally after having me met with Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) on stage for a meaningless stare down, Stevenson came out today and said he’s totally unafraid of Hopkins and he doesn’t see anything in the aging fighter to be afraid of.

Hopkins has a unification fight coming up next month against WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KO’s) on April 19th. DC Armory, Washington, District of Columbia, USA. After that fight, though, Hopkins could be facing either Stevenson in a unification bout or WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

Hopkins appears to be trying to increase interest in his fight with Shumenov by hinting that he could be facing Stevenson after that. That’s an old trick fighters use to drive up interest in their fights by talking about another fight that could come directly after that one. Unfortunately for Hopkins, fans aren’t too interested in a fight between him and Shumenov so far.

Shumenov hasn’t been fighting on a regular basis lately, and he’s failed to take on the really good opposition since he captured the WBA title four years ago in beating Gabriel Campillo. In four years, Shumenov has defended his title five times against Vyacheslav Uzelkov, William Joppy, Danny Santiago, Enrique Ornelas and Tamas Kovacs. Those have been safe fights for Shumenov.

“I was really surprised that he [Hopkins] would put it that way, that he was in my head like that,” Stevenson said to RingTV. “I’m not intimidated by anybody. Nobody is scared of Hopkins.”

It’ll be very surprising if Hopkins chooses to fight either Stevenson or Kovalev, because those guys are solid fighters and it’s been years since Hopkins fought a good opponent in Jean Pascal. Even then, Hopkins had a flawed fighter in front of him in that fight. Stevenson and Kovalev are clearly better than Pascal, and it’s hard to imagine Hopkins doing well against either of them.

Stevenson will be defending his WBC title on May 24th against Andrzej Fonfara (25-2, 15 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Lara picks up WBA 154 lb title, wants Canelo, Mayweather and Golovkin now

erislandy lara By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Association finally wised up in elevating Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KO’s) to the WBA 154 lb champion after his back to back big wins over Alfredo Angulo and Austin Trout. The way that Lara defeated Trout, a fighter that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez failed to prove that he was better then, it showed pretty clearly that Lara is arguably the 2nd best fighter in the 154 lb division behind Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Even Floyd Sr. said that he thinks Lara would beat Canelo if that fight were ever to be made. With the WBA title in his possession, Lara now wants Gennady Golovkin, Canelo or Mayweather. Whichever of these fighters want to face him, Lara is ready to fight them.

“I would like to challenge the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather, Gennady Golovkin and any other top fighter that feels they are the best. Boxing should be about fighting the best.”

Lara needs to realize that the sport of boxing has changed dramatically since the time that greats like Sugar Ray Robinson fought. It’s no longer about the best fighting the best. It’s now more like the best carefully picking beatable fighters that they feel they can defeat. You do see good fighters taking on the best when it’s a case where they still come out ahead even in losing the fight due to the big payday that they get.

Look at Canelo facing Mayweather as an example of that. Canelo got a big payday against Mayweather even in losing, so it was still a victory for Canelo due to the payday he got. But it’s safe to say you won’t be seeing Canelo agree to fight Lara or a tough fighter like Golovkin.

Lara is going to have to create his own path for his future and not count on the likes of Canelo, Mayweather or Golovkin fighting him, because that’s probably not going to happen in this lifetime. Lara is too good and those guys don’t want to lose, so a fight against them is not going to happen.

Lara will be making his first defense of his WBA title on May 2ne against former IBF junior middleweight champion Ishe Smith (25-6, 11 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s too bad that the Lara-Smith fight wasn’t put on the undercard of the Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana fight card a day later on May 3rd, because it definitely belongs on that card.

Schaefer: Canelo is the brightest young star in boxing

saul alvarez By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is now calling Saul “Canelo” Alvarez the brightest young star in boxing following his win over Alfredo Angulo last Saturday night. Canelo stopped an abnormally weak and passive Angulo in the 10th round.

Angulo looked so bad in the fight that you could make a case for every fighter on the card having an excellent chance at beating him, and we’re talking about a lot of lightweights like Ricardo Alvarez, Jorge Linares, Nihito Arakawa and Sergio Thompson. Angulo looked so bad that I think he would have easily lost even the lightweights on the card.

On Friday it was announced that the fight brought in 350,000 pay-per-view buys, and this news obviously has Schaefer over the moon with happiness, because it means that he doesn’t even need to match Canelo against a good opponent in order to make a ton of money with him. His fans will gladly pay to see him fight even if Golden Boy chooses not to step him up again after his loss to Floyd Mayweathber Jr. last September. Canelo already brushed of Erislandy Lara when he attempted to push for a fight against him after the Angulo fight. It wouldn’t be a big deal if Canelo would turn around and fight someone good, but he’s not going to fight anyone half as good as Lara next.

“The fans have spoken,” Schaefer happily said. “Canelo is without a doubt the brightest young star in the sport today. He’s been a huge star in Mexico for quite some time. Now there is no denying that he is a star in the United States as well. We’re already in discussions with Canelo to find the next opportunity to bring another exciting event to boxing fans.”

I’m not focusing on Canelo’s win over Angulo because that was a nothing win. I could see Schaefer getting excited if Canelo had actually beaten someone like Lara, but that’s not what’s happening. Canelo has been matched against two good fighters – Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather Jr. – during his entire career, and the rest of the opponents that he’s faced have been of marginal talent.

Schaefer obviously is talking about Canelo’s popularity rather than his talent. Of course, Canelo is a highly popular fighter with fans. However, if you’re talking about Canelo’s actual talent, then that’s a much different situation. Canelo is probably below Lara in the talent department, and I could see him doing the same thing to Canelo that Mayweather did in his win over him. Lara has the blueprint now in how to beat Canelo by staying on the outside and avoiding his wide swings and hitting him with pot shots all night long. Lara would only need to follow what Mayweather did to him in order to win an easy fight.

With the way that Mayweather has been building Canelo up recently by calling him a huge star, it seems pretty obvious that Mayweather will be looking to face Canelo again next year in a rematch. The rematch isn’t needed, because Mayweather easily beat him by a 12 round decision. But with the huge amount of money that Mayweather made in the Canelo fight last September, it’s a forgone conclusion that he’ll be fighting him again. Canelo has already said that he’d like to fight Mayweather a second time to try and avenge his loss. Mayweather has 4 fights left on his Showtime/CBS contract, but he doesn’t have 4 big name opponents to fight. He’s facing Marcos Maidana next in May, and after that it could be Amir Khan or Danny Garcia. Those aren’t bight fights. Facing Canelo a second time will enable Mayweather to bring his PPV numbers back up to high levels.
