REPORT: GOLDEN BOY, CALIFORNIA COMMISSION INFORMED THAT BERTO TESTS POSITIVE FOR PED
By Scott Shaffer

Boxingtalk has just been advised by a source requesting anonymity that Golden Boy Promotions, DiBella Entertainment and the California State Athletic Commission have all just been notified that Andre Berto has tested positive for a banned performance enhancing substance under VADA protocol. Boxingtalk has not seen the actual test result, but has been advised that Berto's A and B samples both showed traces of norandrosterone. Berto was scheduled to face Victor Ortiz in Los Angeles on June 23rd. The California commission will now have to consider whether to issue Berto a license, so it is premature to say whether the fight is off. Unlike the recent Lamont Peterson positive test, VADA, the Nevada-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association has promptly informed the promoters of the fight, i.e., Golden Boy and DiBella Entertainment. Boxingtalk called both Golden Boy and DiBella representatives, who did not answer the call. Last week, Berto's trainer Tony Morgan told the examiner.com, "I truthfully think drugs are rampant in the sport. I think they are. I think that this new style of testing is going to really drop the hammer on a lot of people. As long as we have the VADA testing, I’m not really worried about it. Because the VADA testing is what is going to catch it.”

I don't know what's going on with Berto.

All these mad scientist trying to be Dr. Mindbender, creating the next Serpentor and shit, fuckin with dna, fluids, and this and that, need to stay the fuck away from the sport. STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE SPORT. All the boxers that are trying to get an edge, you want to know how you get the edge? You get your ass up at 3 and 4 in the morning and you run. You stay in the goddamn gym. You take it old school and you lay off the women while you're in training camp. You take it old school, pick up your axe and split wood. You hit the fuckin speed bag and stay in front of it. You practice your defense, you lift if you have to, you push YOURSELF so you know that if you win, YOU WON because of your hard work and dedication and nto because of a crutch. If you lost, you LOST because the other guy dug a bit deeper than you did, but you can still walk away knowing you were clean.

The culture in sports needs to change.

i honestly think berto didn't do anything intentionally. just taking supplements. But, that is the fighters responsibility. You have to be educated on what you're taking and the risks, otherwise, don't fucking take it. Especially if you requested VADA testing and demanded Ortiz is as well. smh

At this point, I don't think he did either, but we'll wait and see. But still, PED's have no place in sports, especially contact sports like boxing.

This is why you gotta be careful. This article is from 2007.

Quarter of dietary supplements contain steroids

One quarter of dietary supplements purchased in a recent sampling contained traces of steroids and 11.5 percent had banned stimulants, according to a study to determine whether supplements sold across the United States are really clean.

The study was overseen by Informed-Choice, a nonprofit coalition of dietary supplements, and conducted by a British company, HFL.

HFL bought best-selling brands of a variety of supplements made by companies that were not believed to screen for banned substances as part of their routine quality control process. The study does not reveal the names of the brands or their manufacturers.

Of the 52 supplements that could be analyzed for steroids, 13 showed up with steroid contamination. The result surprised Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, who said no American athlete has tested positive because of supplement contamination since 2004.

"I think it's surprising, and hopefully they'll provide names so this illegal activity can be shut down," Tygart said.

These results come about five years after an International Olympic Committee study that sampled 240 supplements purchased in America and found 18.8 percent of them contained steroids.

By Gabriel Montoya

Last Thursday, it was revealed on BoxingScene.com that Andre Berto failed one of his random drug tests that were administered by VADA [Voluntary Anti Drug Association]. Berto's A and B samples were confirmed to have had traces of nandrolone.

Berto is preparing for a welterweight rematch with Victor Ortiz on June 23rd at Staples Center in Los Angeles California. Both fighters had agreed to take part in a random drug testing protocol.

Sources have informed me that analysis of Berto's positive tests results for nandrosterone (a metabolic byproduct of nandrolone) revealed "ultra-trace amounts of Nandrolone in the low parts per trillion range and consistent with contamination not intent."In other words, the amount in his system is so minute [very little] that it is highly unlikely that he intentionally ingested nandrolone but was rather contaminated by food or a supplement.

This is excellent news for Team Berto, essentially backing up the theory explained in my article "Andre Berto Tests Positive for The Molecule of the Month: Nandrolone."

Does this mean Berto/Ortiz II could have been saved?

BoxingScene first reported on Sunday afternoon that Josesito Lopez had accepted the opportunity to face Ortiz.

Hopefully the fight can go on, I want to see the rematch..

Ward vs. Dawson Update; Lopez Inks For Victor Ortiz

By Ryan Maquiñana

Promoter Dan Goossen has advised BoxingScene.com that WBC/WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13KOs), and WBC light heavyweight king Chad Dawson (31-1, 17KOs), have agreed to terms for a fight on September 8th. Dawson would come down 168 to meet Ward for the WBC/WBA titles.

Goossen and Dawson's promoter, Gary Shaw, are still working out the details for the venue and location - with Oakland, Los Angeles and Atlantic City in the running. HBO will televise.

Additionally, Goossen informed BoxingScene that Josesito Lopez (29-4, 7KOs) has officially signed the contract to fight former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22KOs) on June 23rd at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The contract has already been submitted to Golden Boy Promotions, who promote Ortiz. Showtime will televise the fight.

As previously reported, Lopez replaces former champion Andre Berto, who tested positive for a banned substance in a random drug test administered by VADA [Volunteer Anti-Drug Association].
