I don't know the whole shit, but something about the fact that the police and fire department make a fat ass amount of money, and its taking up a fat chunk of the city's budget.

They put some numbers out on the news, said that some firefighters that worked a lot of overtime last year fucked around and earned over $200,000.

So to make up for it, they closed 2 fire stations.

That's real fuckin intelligent. Just pay those fuckin guys a little less. If they are that greedy, then get new recruits and train them the same and pay them a smaller fucking salary. I hate city gov't sometimes.

IT'S NOT THE SALARIES THAT'S BANKRUPTING VALLEJO IT'S THE POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS PENSIONS. IN MOST INSTANCES, THE PENSIONS ARE UP TO 80% OF THE WHAT THE SALARIES WERE. THE TOWN CAN NO LONGER AFFORD IT AND IS ABOUT TO GO BANKRUPT. THE CITY NEEDS TO NEGOTIATE WIH THE UNIONS TO BRING THE PENSIONS DOWN TO A REASONABLE LEVEL. COME ON OSBY! YOU CAN DO IT.

The school district has been in financial turmoil for several years. The state had to take it over and only recently did they give some power back to the district and school board.

Vallejo as a city is in financial trouble due to huge police and fire union contracts, combined with irresponsible spending and the state budget crisis. Vallejo as a city doesn't have much of a retail base which keeps sales tax monies low, where adjacent cities like Fairfield and Vacaville have malls and outlet centers which keep sales tax revenue coming in.

It is actually more cost effective (in most cases) to allow a firefighter to earn overtime than hire another employee to do that work because of the high costs of retirement and benefits, which are huge costs in government.

True, and the new council doesn't hold the same regard for police and fire as those in the past. Police in Benicia and Napa get paid at nearly the same level and those cities have managed to sty afloat financially, its more than just those contracts that are the problem, but they do play a huge part.

Our City Council Members are fuckin' idiots... They've been fuckin' the city over 4 years. The Fire Fighters and Police Officers' contracts are ridiculous. I know that the firefighters are overworked and understaffed. So, they work shifts that are twice as long as other firefighters normally would. That turns into overtime pay. With the police, Idono...They've always been one of the highest forces in California, probably the nation as well. My boss is one of the Chairwoman for the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce along with two others I work with, and she told me in her office a few days ago when we were talking about the budget crisis, and I quote, "We're Fucked. We're really in some deep shit, as a city."
