a mix of all those pretty much. 1st off it's a given that they have to have impressive rhymes or else whats the point. it really impresses me when rappers tell a story all the way through while rhyming so good and staying on coarse so thats probally my favorite (Lupe Fiasco). i also like when rappers bring there pain from there real lif into it and i can relate (Eminem & Tech N9ne) and sometimes i just gottta hear great rhymes that are just battlerap rhymes and an occasional mix of everything but mostly just beast rhymes (Slaughterhouse) Rap is more than just one thing and elite fans of the music can reallly enjoy almost every aspect that it can have.

I wanna hear genuine life experiences being rapped about in a creative, smart way. I don't necessarily need to hear back to back multiple syllable rhymes, but put some thought into it. Don't be lazy and conform to trends. I'm not a child, I don't need you to dumb down your lyrics for my benefit. I have a brain and am more than willing to use it when listening to music. Oh you have a song about how you're hyphy? and one about having dreads? and a song about how you get stupid? YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Sign me up.

As far as subject matter goes, I think it should be dependent on the background/lifestyle of the particular rapper. I wanna hear Tech rap about how his struggle to be successful in music has put a strain on his home life. I wanna hear Raided rap about his past mistakes and how he learned and grew from them. I wanna hear Pac rap about society and the human experience. People say Pac contradicted himself in his songs but they don't realize he told these stories from multiple perspectives and points of view. That's what I want to hear in a rapper.
Do I want to listen to Soulja Boy rap about killin fools? No. (do I want to listen to Soulja Boy at all? Still no.) My point is stick to rappin about what you know.

What I don't want to hear is any song about how much jewelry, clothes, cars, rims, houses, bitches etc.. rapper X has. Who cares. I want substance in my rap and for the most part that doesn't exist anymore.

Rant over. Now excuse me while I conform to trends.

pussu, tiddies, and HAD areolas breh. no marty.

Good to hear the input. I hear some of this stuff that's out and wonder if there's any real hip hop fans out there.

I'm as guilty as anyone else about listening to rap that has zero substance i.e. some Messy Marv songs, Lil Jon, Lil Keke, etc... but they have a character that at least makes it for a good listen and has some thought provoking line at some point. Soulja boy doesn't do it for me, nor does Drake.

I spend a great deal of time writing my music and wanted some reassurance that people still "listen" to music

drake got some knocks on his shit.

im tired of hearing rappers talk about gangbanging and self destructive shit all the time. i can't really listen to that shit anymore. like for example i like some of the livewire cats but if you listen to a lot of their music it gets repetitive. "i got the pots and pans in the kitchen blah blah blah".

I listen to anything in rap really, from Lil Blood to Aesop Rock, mostly underground tho. I enjoy ear candy but I really like a well thought out concept with good lyrics + delivery. I like finding those very obscure rappers who have some serious talent but get slept on. Shit I've been listening to lately.
