Mistah FAB Presents…It’s Official
Rounding out his week with our Guest List blog, The Bay Area MC officially announces his signing with Atlantic Records.

Posted In: Columnists, The Guest List

I’m rich bitch!!!!!!!!

LOL. Yes sir, I signed yesterday with Atlantic Records. Not as an artist, though, I got a label deal. FAEVA AFTA/THIZZ. WE ON LIKE SHIT! I’m about to work my ass off.

After a 7 month biddin’ war, I finally made my decision. Which I think is a good one because they wanted me over there so much that they did some shit that they have never done with this deal. It’s crazy. I’m happy, but I also know that I have a gang of work to do. Finishing the album is first on my list. I have been networkin’ with a lot of people on this project, so don’t be shocked if you see some big big names on it. I got some production on here that’s outta this world. And for all my hip-hop heads out there, this album is not just a hyphy album, I have all types of music on here.

Nigga, I ain’t been signed for 24 hours and everybody and they grandmomma callin’ me already askin’ for shit. I’m like, Damn can a nigga enjoy it? They must have thought that I got some “free money,” hahahaah. It’s cool though, I know its love, I respect it.

It may be many of those out there who feel the hyphy movement may not have what it takes to hold its own in the forever-changing music industry. Me and my fellow Baydestrians are about to change that. The reason why is because we represent the youth, the stressed-out teens who have no hope, no faith, no family and no concerns if they live or die. So, they run around looking for a better way. This movement is their outlet.

It has allowed them to have dance teams just like the old days of pop lockin’. It’s really hip-hop all over the same four elements: break dancing, graffiti, the DJ and the MC. The problem is nobody showed you the hyphy in this form or fashion. I guarentee you will love it. The break dancing is the “Turf Dancing” popularized by the Animaniacs, the Turf Fiends, and the Architecks. This plays a big role in the hyphy movement. The graffiti is displayed through airbrushing and turf taggin’ around the Bay. The DJs break the music, cats like DJ Rick Lee, DJ Juice, Pam The Funkstress, T Ski and several other mixtape DJs that keep the streets up on what’s hot. And the MCs are the voices of the movement. Some artist speak about what’s going on in the streets, and say that they invented the shit. But like every musical movement, the streets create it.

You gotta just come see if you never been to the Bay. Please just come once to feel our energy and I bet you will be like, “I’ve never seen anything like this.” Support the Bay. Just listen to us and see the different views of what’s going on, because at the end of the day, it’s all hood. And what goes on in my hood, goes on in your hood. We “Hood to Hood” like that DVD. I’ll holla.

Oakland Rapper Mistah Fab Inks Label Deal With Atlantic Records
Thursday - September 28, 2006
By: Miles Bennett w/ reporting from Jay Casteel
Oakland rapper Mistah FAB is the latest of a wave of Bay Area emcees who have been scooped up by major labels, trying to get their piece of the widely popular hyphy movement.

FAB recently inked a deal with Atlantic Records where he will release his next album through his own imprint, Faeva Afta/Thizz Entertainment.

The 24-year-old rapper is very excited about the new deal, stating he felt that Atlantic was the best choice after fielding offers from various major labels since January.

"We've been in a bidding war since January with a lot of majors," Mistah FAB told BallerStatus.com. "I sat down with every president across the country. I think that Atlantic showed the most interest, not only that, but they stuck with it. Some labels, we shied away from and we haven't heard from them since. But, Atlantic has constantly stayed on our bumper, trying to get us involved in their whole movement and what they're doing."

After seeing what the New York-based label has done with other hip-hop artists as of late, Mistah FAB was impressed. And after spending a week in New York with the label's staff, he is confident they can help push him the next level.

"We felt like they did a helluva job with Juvenile earlier this year, as well as an extraordinary job with T.I.," the rapper explained. "And I feel like I'm right in that right realm with those artists. I can see myself involved in what they've got going on. Plus, I just like the staff. I got a chance to bond with the staff and really sit down and talk to those guys. I was in New York for like a week, just dealing with them. I just like what they got going on man. It's a good vibe for me."

The first release via the new deal will be Mistah FAB's major label debut, entitled The Yellow Bus Rider, named after a movement the rapper started in the Bay, which is basically an extension of the hyphy movement, according to the rapper.

"The whole yellow bus movement came about on my first single 'Super Sic Wit It' off the Son Of A Pimp album," FAB said. "On there, I have a line where I say, 'I do the dummy retarded and ride the yellow bus,' and that phrase right there blew up what our whole movement is about. Our hyphy thing is about going stupid or to go dumb and when you say, 'yellow bus,' that's ignit. You can't be hyphy if you ain't on that."

Although FAB has a machine behind his music now, he insists that his whole team will continue to do what they've been doing and help push the hyphy movement that much further into the mainstream. But just because he and his region are known for hyphy, he has a lot more to offer.

For those who are unaware, Mistah FAB began his career as a backpack rapper, making numerous appearances on Sway & Tech's Wake Up Show and even traveled the globe with DJ Shadow early on. So, hyphy is not the only side to this Oakland native.

"I'm also a hip-hop artist," said Mistah FAB. "So what I do is something collective called hip-hyphy. The reason why it's so easy for me to do hyphy is because that is my lifestyle, I grew up in it. I'm a crack baby, an 80's baby, so we're hyphy naturally. But, there's more to me and Bay artists in general, than just hyphy music."

Mistah FAB's major label debut, The Yellow Bus Rider, is expected to hit stores in early 2007.
