Merriman holds tongue at criticism from Bears over 'Lights Out' dance

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Shawne Merriman doesn't want to get drawn into a verbal exchange with the Chicago Bears.

The defending NFC champions haven't been shy about goading Merriman in advance of Sunday's season opener at Qualcomm Stadium.

"I would like to say a bunch of things," Merriman said Friday. "And that starts all the way to the top and all the way to the bottom. Things have been directed at me and toward my team. But for the sake of this team and what we're trying to accomplish, I haven't said anything. I don't know how long that can last, but I still keep trying."

Bears Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher criticized Merriman earlier in the week about his "Lights Out" sack dance. Urlacher said if Merriman does it after good plays, he should do it after bad ones.

Actually, Merriman said he might not do it for a while.

"Do all the talking you want," said Merriman, the NFL sack leader last year with 17. "On Sunday you don't have to talk no more -- you just go out and do it and what you are doing will do the talking for you. That can stop their talk."

The Chargers had the NFL's top record last year at 14-2; the Bears were the NFC's best at 13-3.

Both squads are eyeing a return to the playoffs, with the Chargers seeking their first playoff win since the 1994 season.

Getting back to the playoffs -- where they had a major pratfall against the visiting Patriots last January -- is the Chargers' goal. Merriman said the Bears' yapping doesn't add to that.

"It doesn't get me any more motivated," he said. "But I hear it and I see it. I'm like an elephant in that I don't forget these things."

Considering what the Bears have accomplished recently, Merriman said the comments surprised him.

"They sound like guys who haven't been there before," Merriman said. "It's like a lot of needed self-motivation and team-motivation, but not for us. If you want to talk, go ahead and talk. We'll let you do the talking, but its hard not to say something back."

The Chargers enter the game in good health.

Backup running Michael Turner (ankle) worked a full practice Friday, although coach Norv Turner said he isn't sure if Turner will return kicks Sunday. If not, the role falls to Darren Sproles. Also, rookie linebacker Anthony Waters returned to practice after being absent Thursday for the funeral of his grandmother in South Carolina.

You can't compare them. They both play different positions, one plays on the outside and the other Middle. The bottom line is that both are at the TOP of their positions. If I was to pick who's more exciting to watch, then in that case definitely Merriman. I would have to say that Merriman will have the biggest impact on the game. The Chargers running game is too good for Urlacher to make a huge impact. Merriman on the other hand is better than the Bears could block, he's unblockable the way SD uses him.

outside linebacker is by far the easier position to play, the middle linebacker is the quarterback of the defense and is responsible for calling coverage at the line and putting his teammates in the right spot. I say urlacher, plus merriman took steroids and therefore is a cheater no matter what yall say.

it's true you cannot compare the two positions. They both are the best at their position, imo.

One thing to point out about Urlachers lack of sacks is because of the cover 2 defense. Lovie Smith/Ron Rivera (who is now on SD) NEVER blitz Urlacher. He always drops back and either waits for the run or drops back into coverage. I will say that urlacher is much better at coverage then merriman and merriman is better at attacking the QB than Urlacher.

Also, you got to take the Urlacher comments into context. This is one of those cases where the media is trying to create drama because I heard the interview and they were asking him unrelated shit and towards the end of the interview asked him to comment on merrimans dance, so it's not like he seeked the media to talk shit or anything like that, it was a specific question directed at him and he basically said the dance is gay, which is true.

Should be a good game though. I give the advantage to SD because of homefield and most importantly Ron Rivera used to be the defensive coordinator for da bears so he knows the ins and outs of the defense and I'm sure can help SD's offense a great deal by pointing out their weaknesses.

It's funny how the Bears supposedly were the only ones talking, when during the commercial shoot of that LT commercial where runs runs all over the Bears D, P.Rivers told Tommie Harris that LT was going to do that that day of the game, didn't happen, even though my squad lost a very competetive game.

^^^thats not exactly how it happened, both harris and rivers were talking smack back and forth having fun during the commercial shoot, some reporter heard what they were saying and made a story out of it...but whatever, i told you rex would be your downfall...........
It wasn't all Rex Chokeman's fault, the Fumbles did us in. If we don't fumble on those two occasions, who knows, but fuck it hat goes off to SD, they came with it. See you in the Super Bowl XVII

yeah I don't put the loss on grossman, it was lack of a running game and the turn overs. The one INT wasn't grossmans fault - bernard berrian quit on his route.

He didn't play great, but he didn't lose the game either. Benson and his 2 yards per carry isn't going to cut it.

rex gets too much shit considering he is just entering his 2nd full season as a starter. he wasnt bad enough to keep them from going to the super bowl last year.

This is my point though, "he wasnt bad enought to keep them from going to the super bowl" what i take from that is 'the bears were able to overcome rex grossmans shortcomings at the qb position'
i understand what you guys are saying, but at what point does your quarterback start affecting the outcome of the game indirectly? i mean look, its no secret that his inconsitency, and lack of confidence from the team causes the coaching staff to alter game plans and not call certain plays....example down by 11 late in the 4th qtr and the bears run up the middle three straight times, is that a vote of confidence for grossman? also you guys focus on benson, lets be honest it was clear from early in the game that he wasnt gonna be able to run the ball thus turning the bears one dimensional, this is when grossman has to win the game and not just play to not lose it.
all and all the game was very competative, the bears d did what they said they were gonna do, stop Lt. only problem was they forgot to cover antonio gates...
