Nas- Godson
2002 Ill Will/Columbia Records
1. Get Down- Nas spits to a blues style beat about a lot of street shit. Definitely a banger. He spits about a lot of shit from dice to juries to gangbangers in L.A. and people gettin shot up. Definitely what I was expecting. 10/10
2. The Cross- This could possibly be the hardest track on the album. Nas spits absolute fire to a bangin' ass baseline with some high-low's in the backround. He's mainly talkin about being the king of New York and carrying the cross like Jesus for rappers, a little sac religious but nevertheless dope ass shit. 10/10
3. Made you Look- Nas goes 3/3 with this one. The track sounds like a club banger but it has a hot ass beat and a mobbed out gangsta feel to it. "Put your hand up that you shoot with, count your loot wit', Push the pool stick in your new crib, same hand that you hoop with, Swing around like you stu-pid, king'a the town, yeah I been that, You know I click-clack where you and yor men's at, Do the Smurf, do the Wop, Baseball Bat, Rooftop like we bringing '88 back!" 10/10
4. Last Real Nigga Alive- This beat changes, goes to a little bit or a more basic hip hop feel. Nas spits about everything...gives a lot of info on the ongoing New York battling beef with Jay Z, info on Biggie, Biggie's beef with Raekwon...4/4 another classic track. 10/10
5. Zone out- This track goes back to that bangin' hip hop club feel that was brought out on "Made You Look." Another tight ass track with an original beat and some dope ass lyrics; but not as good as the first 4. If Im not mistaken, I caught a Lil' Bow Wow diss in this by one of Nas's Braveheart comrades. 8.5/10
6. Hey Nas- Nas comes with his typical tight ass flows...the beat is also pretty well done, a little more laidback but still has a dance feel to it. The chorus is kinda weak, but a good track. 8/10.
7. Hey Nas- Probably the most original track on the album. Nas talks to children like he's a teacher, talking about the problems of the ghetto, cocaine, and history of African American People. "'fore we came to this country, We were kings and queens, never porch monkeys, It was empires in Africa called Kush, Timbuktu, where every race came to get books, To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans,Asian Arabs and gave them gold, when Gold was converted to money it all changed" excellent track. Inspirational. 10/10
8. Book of Rhymes- Nas tries a new concept, he brings in an old book of rhymes he wrote and reads them. Coulda been very good, the beat is well done, but the rhymes are kinda weak. 6/10
9. Thugz Mansion Acoustic- This is the song he did with Pac. The idea of adding the acoustic was tight, the song definitely could have used some base though. But Nas comes tight, and Pac comes tight. 7/10
10. Mastermind- Nas starts talking about how he is a "Mastermind." The beat is tight, the sounds in the backround give it kind of a Tony Montana feel. Another tight ass track. 8/10
11. Warrior Song- Nas switches up his flow a little more on this one. Alicia Keys is featured, she is a positive addition to the track. The beat is tight again, a lot of additional sounds are added that come and go. Good song. 8.5/10
12. Revolutionary Warfare- "Splitting dutches up, strap up, the armies is school, Teaching smart ways to kill, I'm thinking Ghandi was a fool-But chronic's a fool; got me thinking out loud, fuck it
Sleep on my drunkenness I'll blow your brains out." As this album goes on, you aren't blown away anymore by Nas's rhymes, but thats just because you've gotten used to them. He features Lake on the track, he's cool but not on Nas's level. The beat is very laidback and soulfull. 8/10
13. Dance- Another more laidback feel...this one is dedicated to his mother. Still, its a tight ass song, and everyone should be able to feel this track. The only word I can think of for it is centemental or heartwarming. 9.5/10
14. Heaven- Nas Goes back to a more hip hop beat and spits some shit on his theory: if heaven was a mile away would you pack up and go. Another soulful track, but this one wasn't especially outstanding or good. 7/10
Bonus disc
1. -The beat starts off with a crazy old school hip hop sound. Nas flows hard on this about the streets and about a dude who started out from nothin and runs game and becomes a factor. Pretty hard but very short. 7/10.
2. Pussy Kills- Definitely one for the fellas. Nas speaks the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Off the fuckin hook. 10/10.
3. The G.O.D.- Another tight banger. Nas comes off the hook to a heated mobbed out banger. Talks about coming back strong and how he was on Hot 97 talkin smack, doesnt say any names but talks about people ruining hip hop. Another very short track. 9/10.
Nas comes with consistent heat and this CD is no different. All of Nas’s cds are difficult to compare. Stillmatic was my favorite, and this one is not as good as Stillmatic, but it is much better than I Am or Nastradamus. The album it reminds me most of is Illmatic actually. Consistent effort, hot concepts, new beats, a must swoop.
9/10.
