I was reading a couple of posts recently and I heard a couple people evaluate the artist based on his ability to used "MULTI-SYLABIC" words. Maaaaaaaan... is that what it's come to nowdays.

Is this all a tongue twistn' contest. Let me weigh in on this.

Rap music comes from the heart. Most of the shit that's out here today doesn't come from the heart. I don't care if its gangster, fly, or whatever. There are two kinds of rap music: serious or lighthearted.

Seems like people are getting the two confused. The frustration I have is that hardcore rap is by nature serious. Yet, people seem to put more emphasis on the syllables, the tongue twistin, and the ability to groan like DMX...than they go the CONTENT.

If you wanna know why Eminem is sellin millions of units. Well, in my opinion its two reasons. 1) Dre is still dre. But remember every rapper Dre pushes doesn't go gold.
2) he is talkin about some real shit. HIS real shit. You ask kids, lil black kids in the deep east and they all say the same thing, "That white boy be talkin about some real shit." It still comes down to that. He is not talkin about anybody else's life, he is one of the few "rappers" who are still rappers and not imitation, wannabe, caricatures of a by-gone era.

Its almost like some rappers are scared to talk about what they know. I don't know what it is, but it gets old real quick. It is takin a WHITE BOY to bitch slap every other rapper on the west coast for a lot of rappers to realize that have to keep it real. Real to their own experiences. Its th onyl way people will relate to what you are saying.

There was one guy on HERE, forget the name, who had a song about his baby momma or somethin and it was from the heart. I think he was talkin about how he didnt want to lose her. I give that a 10. I didn't care for the music, but take those lyrics into a great producer and...SOMEBODY out there will feel it and maybe buy it. But that is the exception.

Multisyllables!!! Are you kidding me. Fuckin the Kings English makes you a raw rapper? Throw all this out the window if it's in the trunk. If the beat is knockin, then it might sell anyway... but how many studios are really making mobb beats anymore...

Its hella lyrical gymnists out there..... but not many rappers.

(damn, sccness is hella cool. Where else can you talk about shit like this.)

I agree but I also disagree.

To me, the most important thing in rap music is definitely the lyrics. Of course, an artist wont get heard or get recognition unless he has tight beats, but lyrics are what really fill the content of rap music and make it "rap" instead of R&B. An artist that spits hard lyrics should definitely get recognition. That's why to me artists like Gangsta Dre are still as dope as other rappers that use larger words in their music.

But, just like in writing and journalism, big words give someone the ability to explain more in depth what they are talking about. They also give a lot of "flava" to the writing or the music. It takes a good amount of talent to be able to make larger syllable words fit into a good flow and a story at the same time. So multi-syllable rhymes are definitely a plus in music but by no means a nessecity.

A lot of mainstream rap seemed to be heading towards large syllable raps, but the hottest thing in rap right now is 50 cent, and his flow is pretty much a westcoast flow, with gangsta lyrics, and westcoast beats.

"Daddy" I am open to upgrading it, though it is not a major priority right now. We needed a website, I built a website... had never done it before but when shit needs to get done, you do it. It is functional. Get at me to discuss what you feel you can do, $, etc.

Madd Dogg: it takes talent to rhyme a bigger word. I disagree. It is easier. The more words you know, the easier it is to rhyme. If somebody can rap and give straight talk.... I tend to give them credit. Regardless, there has to be some realness to what they are saying. People buy records they relate to. This is just my opinion, but I think people feel a rapper no matter how intricate the lyrics are if it is something they can relate to. Hence the phrase, "I feel you, mayne"

Just seems like everybody wants to be Websters dictionary instead of focusing on the real shit. If its not serious, then be light-hearted.... but I hate it when they mix the two.

I feel what you saying and I personally feel you need a mixture of both....and i don't think it's really all about being a "lyrical gymnist" but more of new metaphors, similies, or un-heard of lines....... shit that will make your mind think rather than tell you straight up.....not sure if anyone knows what I mean....

you have to admit...."cock my glock on the block while the cops stops my hops on my drop top " get's kinda old...mufuckas would rather here some shit like.....

"getting pulled over while driving mexican / music pounding so loud, I had to ask the cop "what did you say again?" / looking at me like I done raped his wifey / and I'm lieing through my teeth, cause the bitch is sitting right beside me"....

all this in my opinion...."word play" is a must to catch a persons attention....

"if the beat ain't tight, then dump it, scratch it and start over / don't do a song that's half ass, do it till it's done, until you sober" Game Is A Must.....Cuddie Cut......

Above The Rest: The example you gave didnt have a bunch of big words in it.

This is more of what I mean:
Oxymoronic, hypothetical, poetical, lyrical gyrator, eclectic innovator, pushin the brink of metaphysical connectedness, while I wreck this shit.... and perplex this shit....connect the dots and shit like the red game you had in your hands back in the days, I make you reminisce and reflect on old ways...

Thats the type of shit that I have noticed is becoming the norm. The open mic, slam poetic style that took off in 1990 has come into rap and is "almost" the standard for lyrical quality.

i feel you, but i cant feel simple shit even if it is real..
At least you're honest about it. I think there are a lot of people like you. I'm not sayin its bad or good, I'm just saying that maybe the taste of the people have changed.... even in the bay where people still appreciate subwoofers, bass-coils, and a good head nod. I don't know if its an east coast influence or what. I am just saying that I have notoced the change.
When people are saying that a lyricist is weak, they usually mean his shit is simple. I heard a BART battle a while back where one artist was gettin in that ass but I thinkhe lost mainly becuase the other rapper was coming out of Webster's dictionary. Ay, to each his own, but it is definitely a change.

Even if the rhymes come complexed...if the shit don't make sense a consumer is gonna catch that..and can tell when a muthafucca is jus makin up shit just to make it sound tight...but if u can rhyme simplistic and complex and still get a point across to any age, color, or gender..then that's talent rite dere...u look at 2pac...and his rhymes wasn't all that complex...yet they weren't all simplistic either..but to this day...almost anyone can relate to any of 2pac songs....by the words he spits...if you can make ur lyrics deliver in a universally verbal format...then shit you shouldn't have a problem getting your shit sold...

I've heard some rappers (not on this board) but cds, I've bought...muthafuccas sound hard or they come with this complex vocab like they fucken got hooked on phonics or bought speak and spell the other day...but, shit I listen to them lyrics...if you jus saying shit to sound cool...man fuck all dat shit..your cd is gettin no more play in my stereo foshiggidy...

At the same time, you got guys who try to come all hard coughKobeSozcough....and you look at that muthafucca or just by the voice you can tell they can't back up half the shit they talk about...them "wankstaz" (oops I used a trueazn term, sorry)...and you know its all bullshit..so you throw that shit to the curb...you know who I remember that I heard that sound like they put their heart into their shit?...long ago I bought a tape called Mr Predicter at Creative....Cellski to me sounds like he was putting his heart into that tape...the lyrics the beats..that shit is bangin from start to finish...and you can relate with some of the shit and others well you can (if you from the ghetto)...all n all though...that was and still is a fucken classic...anyways, I'm rambling too much now..so ill end here...

content is like 50% of good lyrics... you gotta actually have something to say.. give out a message.. a lot of rappers who use the multisyllable rhyme patters arent saying shit.. they throw in big computer words to make it sound cool.... sometimes personal rating systems need to be implemented according to what a person looks for

i.e.

a Complete MC =
50% Lyrics
(50% content including originality, 30% getting your message across, 10% Complex Rhyme Patterns, 10% Metaphors and similies )

+

50% Flow
(40% Style, 40% Presence/Confidence, 20% Voice)

some ppl make flow and rhyme patterns as their main reason to listen to niggas cuz it sounds good to your ears.. what i got a problem with are the niggas who say talking bout money cash hoes is played out, then they the same niggas who love battle rap (which has been around much longer than bling bling).. Hippocrites...

but fuck it.. everyone has their tastes.. let em like what they want.. each artist reaches out for a certain audience....
