Former Novato teacher arrested in molest case

A former elementary school teacher in Novato was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of molesting a boy 50 to 60 times over the past two years, police said.
Allan Dennison Hulme, 60, bailed out of the county jail Tuesday night, even after authorities raised the bail amount from $150,000 to $500,000.
"I'm innocent," Hulme said before two Zig-Zag bail bondsmen hustled him into a jailhouse elevator, with one bondsman trying to block a reporter from getting aboard.
Hulme, neatly dressed in a red plaid shirt and tan slacks, offered no further comment on the elevator ride before the bondsmen ushered him out of the jail's ground-floor exit.
Hulme, who won a "Marin County Schoolmaster of the Year" award in 1980, was arrested Tuesday evening at the home he has occupied for 37 years on Topaz Drive in the Bahia neighborhood. Novato police launched an investigation after a 16-year-old Novato boy made the allegations to a therapist, and the therapist contacted police.
The boy claimed the suspect has engaged in 50 to 60 sexual acts since the summer of 2005, when the boy was 13 years old, said Novato police Sgt. Keith Heiden.
"On some occasions, the suspect restrained the victim against his will," Heiden said.
The boy met the suspect in the neighborhood, not through school, Heiden said. "He has not been a teacher - in Novato, that I'm aware of - for at least 10 years," he said.
Hulme was arrested on suspicion of continuous sexual abuse of a child, lewd acts with a child, oral copulation by force and false imprisonment, police said. The investigation is continuing, and anyone with additional information is asked to call the Novato Police Department at 897-4361.
The case will be referred to the district attorney's office for a decision on charges. A court date is pending.
Hulme is a Marin County native who graduated from College of Marin in 1967 and San Diego State University in 1968. In 1971, he started teaching at Loma Verde Elementary School in Ignacio while earning a master's degree at San Francisco State University in 1972.
In 1976, the Loma Verde parent-teacher association awarded Hulme an honorary service award for his work with his students and his volunteer efforts for the PTA.
It's been along time coming for this dude. Even when he was my teacher people were always whispering about he was a pedophile, but he was such a good teacher and did a lot of work for the school (and they didnt have any hard evidence) that they didnt fire him. My year with him was the last year he taught at my elementary school, and it was because he basically got forced out of there, due to parents complaining. He used to do shit like rub kids backs (only the guys, of course). One time i asked him a question about a test and he just stroked my hair and told me i had "nice, soft hair". Another very weird, uncomfortable experience i had was we were at the class party, a pool party at a kids house, and he was in the pool swimming and he started a game of "chicken". He told me to be his "partner", and made me get up on his shoulders. Needless to say it was hella fucking uncomfortable, my little kid genitalia all over the back of his neck. *shivers*.
