Angels Baseball announces official name change

ANAHEIM -- Angels Baseball Monday announced the team has changed its official name to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. This change is effective January 3, 2005.
The inclusion of Los Angeles reflects the original expansion name awarded by Major League Baseball in December 1960 and again returns the Angels as Major League Baseball's American League representative in the Greater Los Angeles territory that Major League Baseball expects the team to serve.

The Los Angeles region, which is comprised of Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties, is the second largest media market in the country. This name change will strengthen the Angels' long-term economic health by enhancing the marketability through this metropolitan area and beyond.

Angels Baseball and the "A" brand will continue to be the marketing focus of the organization and Angels Stadium of Anaheim remains the home of the 2004 defending American League Western Division Champions.

The Angels have enjoyed tremendous success in Anaheim, highlighted by a World Championship in 2002. The organization will continue to work closely with the City of Anaheim in promoting the Anaheim community, Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and the Angels' baseball experience.

They were LA a long time ago... I think over 30 years ago... If I remember correctly they were Los Angeles Angels, California Angels, Anaheim Angels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in that order.

Maybe my Anaheim Jersey will be worth something someday :)

Nah, but it all reality..Moreno did it to make his pockets fatter. Anaheim fans did as much as they could (protested, sent in letters, etc...), and so did the politcs of Anaheim...but money over-rode everything.

Im still an Angel fan...it's just a name. They still play 10 minutes from my pad...

They were new in 60 or 61 and were the Los Angeles Angels... Then in 65 they moved to Anaheim and became the California Angels... In 1996 Gene Autry sold the team to Disney and they became the Anaheim Angels... They remodeled the stadium but it was still the same one in Anaheim... That's where they're still playing now.

From what I read it still sounds like a risk he's taking...? He's hoping to convert some LA fans and get some new fans in LA I guess, seems like it would be a hard sell though... I know if the A's went to SF or vice versa the fans wouldn't be converting and I don't really see them really getting any new fans either...

Actually he is getting alot of new fans. A lot of marketing has been done in LA for the Angels. I mean, obviously he wont get the REAL Dodger fans. Last year all of a sudden I started seeing Angel billboards in LA, Angels on the bus benches, people in downtown LA sporting Anaheim gear. Then we had the 3rd highest ticket sales for Anaheim Stadium last year..right under LA and NY.

It will slowly gain popularity.
Plus we all know the Dodgers aren't going to make any noise in 2k5 (no offense...but LA had some REALLY BAD trades).

Overall..Mareno knows what is best for the teams financial status. If it takes us to another WS, then great.

It's still all over the papers.
Ya, alot of people are mad at Arte..including the City Council of Anaheim. Ha, they quoted the Anaheim mayor today in the OC Register.

Words from the mayor of Anaheim to Arte Mureno "See you in court".

Arte is breaching contracts with the sh he is trying to pull.

It MIGHT get a lot of new fans. It might not. It's definitely not guaranteed... Changing the team name to any other name would probably have equal or better chances of gaining fans... Most Los Angeles baseball fans are going to like the Dodgers already... Are there that many undecided baseball fans in that city/county that Arte is going to win over by renaming the Angels?

Anaheim's ticket sales jumped by about a million in 2003 because they won the World Series... That WS title is why their attendance is high.

But if the point is to increase the fanbase, why wouldn't he go back to California Angels? That seems like it makes more sense...

1) It wouldn't be offensive to Angel Fans (Dodger Haters) who don't want to be called LA.
2) It would be going back to what Gene Autrey had so there wouldn't really be any Angel fans against it.
3) It would increase the potential fanbase to people up and down the state.

I dont.I hate when teams are named after states as opposed to cities.I think Anaheim works JUST fine...changin it to anything else is retarded...
