I was talkin to a friend (female) who is white the other day. We were talkin and this music video came on with EMinem. You know the one where he is just rappin on stage the whole time and has it done over an old rock and roll beat. This woman turned her attention to the television and said, "Oh...I loooove this song. I haven't heard this in soooo long. Who is this? Eminem? I would buy this record JUST for this song."

My brain works like a computer, and so I instantly started workin on this info. here is a 36 year old white woman. She is not one of these white people who grew up around blacks or in an inner-city. She is not a rap music fan. She likes country music to her core and went through a Hard-rock phase as a teen. But she is willin to go buy this rap album instantly... then it registered what that muthafucka did. That song is the equivalent (in white world) of The Message. It's the same thing Puffy did back in the day when he re-did that song. Only difference is that Puffy raped the song and made real OG's turntheir nose's up for makin "The Message" into a commercial piece of dance-shit. But this young white boy kept the spirit of the song. I admit I know nuthin about the song. I dont even know who its by, but I could take one look in her eye, and then at the audience in that video and see that he is a smart kid. very saavy.

Thing is, he is the ONLY one inthe rap industry who can do that and get away with it. Most rappers aren't knowledgeable enough and in tune enough with white world to do that. The rappers who CAN do it are too busy tryin to be... I wont go there. Run DMC did it. They probably sold more records with that rock song than everything else put together. That shit works, but I dont know anyone that could pull it off.

Second thing: white kids buy rap music, too. Sometimes they even drive this market. I WISH paperTrail had a white rapper who was legit and had the talent to stay true to his experiences.... man, it'd be all gravy. Thing about it is that EMinem doesn't have to "cross-over", he is already there. I'm sure there are about 20 songs he could do that to and most of us wouldn't know the first thing bout the original song.... man.... if he can get my friend to buy a rap record..if he can get black kids lovin his music, and hoards of white audiences rocking to his music the way I love James Brown's "Funky Good Time" ... they haven't made the bank big enough to hold his earnings.

its real shit though, the track is by Areosmith, Dream On i think
right, right, right...I am not sure, but I think that's it b/c I remember the words "Dream On" inthe background. When I realized what he'd done, I just shook my head. Did you see the size of that crowd. It was on some Michael Jackson size crowd. You know how you see video of Mike and he's in France or England or someplace and he's packing STADIUMS and shit. STanding room only type shit.
SHit, call me naive, but I was impressed. Maybe it was just smoke and mirrors (cameras can make it look packed, I guess) but somethin tells me this guy is packing venues on the regular because he is pulling from all walks of life. Tapping into a broader demographic is something not many of us can do. It goes beyond being a dope producer and lyricist. Dj Sham (who produces our shit at PaperTrail) couldn't have pulled that song out of his ass because he doesn't know the first thing about Aerosmith. I dont give credit to Dr. Dre for that becuase IMO the idea probably came from Eminem...based onthe fact that I've followed Dre since the World Class Wreckin Cru days and I've never heard him reach to that kind of audience.

Moe, I respect your pride and position. At the same time, presentation is part of the package. Most bigger labels (sony, Jive, etc) are looking for artists from 18-25. Of course they'll take somebody if they're hot, but they seem more willing to give benefit of the doubt to a younger person. My point is, demographic does make a difference. I respect what you're saying, but if a young Eminem walked into most labels and dropped heat for A&R, they would probably crack a greedy little smile. Then again, maybe his color works against him... maybe its harder to win over people who dont like white rappers. I'm sure thats probably valid because people are skeptical of the unfamiliar.

But my point was that he was able to strike a nerve with that song. I might have heard it before, it sounded vaguely familiar to me. But apparently, that song is THE SHIT in some circles. Because he was up on it, he capitalized. Nuthin wrong with that.

Question, if somebody came to you with an idea for a song which would make a shitload of money, but the idea took advantage of your color...would you turn it down?

I don't think its an insult to assess a situation and figure out the best way to make a dollar. PLus, I don't look at it as a "sell-out" thing because Eminem is who he is. Despite the thread clownin him for wearin dew rags, I guess I never really saw him as trying to be anything he wasn't. So I dont consider him to be "selling out". Now if Killa Tay, C-Bo, or B-Legit did the same shit..... I might do a double take. I wouldn't hate on them, either.... but I would do a double take.

I dont think Em all that brilliant, a white rapper getting a white woman into his music or a certain song because it uses or has elements from an old song he used to like.
He's catering to his fellow white folk where is the genius in that?

As for him being the only one who can do it and get away with it is because of his skin tone......
"If he can get black kids loving his music" No one I know (non white) listens to any of his music because no one I know has fantasy's of killing his mom and wife those arent the kind of problems that are in the community around here.
