By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s) is willing to take the fight against World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s). In an article at the Los Angeles Times, Schaefer said “At 147, the man to beat is ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley. Floyd Will take that fight, and will shut up all those [boxing fans] who are saying he’s a coward.”

This is great news for fans, because many of them assumed that Mayweather wasn’t interested in taking on a dangerous fighter like Mosley. Mayweather has focused on competing against smaller fighters since his fight against light welterweight Ricky Hatton in December 2007.

After coming off of a two year retirement in September 2009, Mayweather defeated Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, who had to move up in weight from the lightweight division to fight Mayweather at a catch weight. As many expected, Marquez was simply too small to compete against Mayweather, and the added weight – nine pounds – that Marquez put on only slowed him down.

Although Schaefer says that Mayweather is willing to fight Mosley, Floyd still has to fight an alternate opponent for March 13th, because his mega fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao fell through because of the random blood testing that Mayweather was insisting on for the fight.

Pacquiao agreed to three blood tests, but Mayweather wanted testing to be done up until 14 days before the fight. Pacquiao wanted it stopped at 24 days. Pacquiao wasted little time in picking a replacement fighter former International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Joshua Clottey after his talks with Mayweather disintegrated. However, Mayweather still has to find someone. Paulie Malignaggi and Matthew Hatton have been mentioned as possible opponents for Mayweather to fight on March 13th. However, neither of them has excited boxing fans all that much.

Before Mayweather can fight Mosley, though, Shane must first get by his next fight, a January 30th unification bout against World Boxing council welterweight champion Andre Berto. That fight is no gimme for Mosley, and he’s going to have to be smart and fight his heart out if he wants to beat the fast and talented Berto. Mosley is 38, and hasn’t fought since last year when he defeated then WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito by a 9th round stoppage. A lot of things can change in a year, and Mosley may have slipped some since notching that win over Margarito. If Mosley can get by Berto, then the Mosley-Mayweather fight could be really huge in terms of pay-per-view buys. Naturally, it wouldn’t be anything like a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would have been, but it would be still huge none the less because of Mosley’s fame.

Funny how the tables have turned against Floyd.

Now he's going to have to fight a much more difficult fight, assuming Mosley does get past Berto (not an easy task), and Mayweather does agree to the fight.

Mosley is physically bigger than Floyd, and can match his speed. Plus, he's got the style to be able to force Floyd to fight, IMO. I would love to see this fight.

Its too bad it took Pacquiao-Mayweather dying for Floyd to realize he has finally run out of viable options.

Mayweather vs Mosley on May 1 in Las Vegas?

By Mark Vester

While Manny Pacquiao has moved on and plans to defend his WBO welterweight title against Joshua Clottey on March 13 in Dallas, Texas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been left without a solid option for his next fight. Mayweather is still scheduled to return on March 13 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas but there appears to be a chance that Mayweather might push his return to May 1 and fight Shane Mosley for the WBC/WBA welterweight titles - if Mosley gets past Andre Berto on January 30. May 1 is a date that Golden Boy Promotions has been targeting for the return of Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand.

Mayweather is taking a chance here sitting on the bench. If he sits back until January 30 to see who wins that fight, any shot of a Mayweather return on March 13 is out the window. If Berto wins, it's not likely that manager Al Haymon will allow two of his boxers to fight each other. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told the Los Angeles Times that Mayweather is ready and willing to fight Mosley.

"At 147 pounds, the man to beat is 'Sugar' Shane Mosley," Schaefer said. "Floyd will take that fight, and will shut up all those who are saying he's a coward."

So it looks like Floyd will be fighting on March 13th as well. Going head to head with Pacquiao on PPV. His list of opponents is boo boo though, IMO:

Malignaggi, Nate Campbell, Kermit Cintron...and posssssibly Timothy Bradley

Malignaggi? C'mon now, that fight is not PPV worthy. Not even if Paulie was allowed to use weapons in the ring.

Nate Campbell? At welterweight? LMAO. Wow.

Kermit Cintron? I guess, he's a decent fighter...but nowhere near elite in the division, let alone the sport, IMO.

...and the Timothy Bradley matchup would be interesting if it weren't for the fact that we have no idea whether or not he will be effective fighting at 147 pounds, even though for the payday, there is no doubt he would take it.

I guess Matthew Hatton is a no go. LMAO.

Okay, haha...my point is that none of the opponents listed as possibilities are even in the top 20 in the welterweight division...which is supposedly Floyd's division.

Watch the Mayweather and Mosley fight go down and Mayweather's olympic style drug testing on Mosley is nowhere to be found.

^^yeah and the ironic part about that is shane mosley has been caught using steroids in the past.

Also, floyd isn't smart going head to head against pacquiao on the same day. First off pacquiao is fighting a top 5 weltwerweight at the dallas cowboys new stadium. There will be 50,000 people there. Floyd would be fighting someone not nearly as good and in vegas as usual. The real question is who is HBO going to side with? I can't see them passing on an oppurtinity to have a show at Cowboys stadium.

Floyd should just fucking wait and fight Shane Mosley/berto on may 1st. stupid idea going against pac the same night, it just means less money for everyone.

it would be pretty interesting if they (floyd and manny) did go head to head to fight on the same day to see who would generate more ppv buys since we're not gonna see them fight.

well it would depend entirely on the undercard. Bob Arum loves to use Mexican fighters and hope the Mexican faithful will order as a result. He's talking about having Antonio Margarito and possibly Julio Cesar Chavez jr. on the undercard.

As far as Mayweather, I can see Zab Judah on the undercard, not sure who else. I can see Golden Boy using Juan Manuel Marquez as well.

Regardless, both cards I will imagine will be pretty stacked since they are going head-to-head and undoubtedly whoever sells more would demand a 60/40 split if Floyd vs Pac is to happen at the end of the year.

This fight wont happen in March, theres no way you can promote this fight with so little time. Less than two months wont be enough time to get the most out of it. The same goes for the Pac - Clottey fight.

Golden Boy is saying KERMIT CINTRON is the leading candidate for Mayweather.

http://www.badlefthook.com/2010/1/14/1251959/oscar-de-la-hoya-talks-mayweather

So take that for what it's worth.

Oscar says it's up to Floyd if he wants to fight Cintron or Mosley....

I think if they both win their next fights the hype will be right back and will be the same, if not even more considering how much press it got.

My prediction is that they will fight eachother in Sept or Nov of this year.

Pacquiao is here to save the world of boxing
