MARION, Ind. -- Portland Trail Blazers forward Zach Randolph was arrested for underage drinking during the Memorial Day weekend, police said.
Randolph was arrested shortly before midnight Friday after city police stopped the sport utility vehicle he was driving because it matched the description of an SUV being used by gang members.
Police said Randolph's blood alcohol content was less than half the state's legal limit of .08 percent. However, the legal drinking age in Indiana is 21, and Randolph does not turn 21 until July 16.
Randolph could face a 180-day jail term if he is convicted of underage drinking.
A 19-year-old passenger in the SUV was also arrested. Both are scheduled to appear in court Monday.
The Associated Press left a message seeking comment Wednesday morning at the Trail Blazers' office. There was no number for Zach Randolph in Portland, Ore., or Marion, Ind. phone listings.
Randolph, a first-round pick of the Trail Blazers in the 2001 NBA draft, played in 42 games last season, averaging 2.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.
The 6-foot-9 forward left Michigan State after his freshman season, despite the objections of coach Tom Izzo, his high school coach and his mother. He signed a three-year deal with the Trail Blazers that pays him $2.693 million under the NBA's rookie salary scale.
During his one season in college, Randolph averaged 10.8 points and 6.7 rebounds, and ranked third in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (58.7).
The former Indiana High School All-Star was a member of Marion's Class 4A championship team in 2000. He averaged 22.6 points and 16.1 rebounds in his senior season.
The Blazers are quickly becoming the Dallas Cokeboys of the NBA.
