Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweaher Jr. have all ready reached their legacy, that’s undeniable. The two of them are at least, Hall Of Famers, with impressive records of 51-3-2, 38 KO’s and 40-0, 25 KO’s. Some argue about the quality of opponents of each of them.
Pacquiao/Mayweather is the fight the world wants; however, to be honest and fair, this fight should be able to everyone everywhere. This means from an economic point of view, that the fight should not be on PPV. Boxing started as a sport for poor people, as evidenced in the Movie Cinderella Man starring Russell Crowe, which developed during the 1930’s. The decade of the 70’s when Ali fought Frazier and Foreman was characterized because fights were free on TV..
Although promoters will do everything to make this fight even more attractive than it is, by putting together an undercard “for the ages”, this will mean they’d probably charge the fight an amount a few people can pay, and will limit the # of PPVs and the revenues from the Event. When Oscar de la Hoya fought Felix Trinidad back in 1999, the undercard was not that “interesting” just the main event called “Fight of the Millenium”. This example serves as a lesson that a fight of the magnitude of Mayweather-Pacquiao (same as De La Hoya-Mayweather) needs to be promoted and heated up with tons of publicity, which is rightly what has happened. The Boxing world wants to see the fight, and most people are willing to pay for it. In the other hand, what will happen to poor people who cannot reach the cost of PPVs, yet are as hardcore fans as anyone willing to pay or even more.
Their records look tremendous and so they are. Some fans/haters of both sides have plenty of arguments regarding who’s better or not. The truth is, they are both great fighters. On one hand you have Mayweather, who has a substancially bigger hater base than Pacquiao, who’s well-known for his great skills and flash reflexes. Many boxing fans around the world do not appreciate or value these skills of Mayweather since his fights mostly lack of action by his own fault, however, styles makes fights. On the other hand, you have Manny Pacquiao, a fighter who’s well-known for reaching his current status by fighting the hard way from the Phillipines and who exhibits an action-packed style of fighting regardless of the opponent. Pacquiao has haters too, but his relentless style and sympathy for the others makes him a great person out of the ring as well.
A fight between them will not only be great in the ring, but out of the ring where you’ll have Mayweather trash-talking Pacquiao all the way around, yet Pacquiao will carry the smile that is characteristic of him and non-trash talk in the news press-conference. The same story will be seen every chapter of 24/7 including the trash-talking between Freddi Roach and the Mayweathers.
This fight will be a spectacle from the same moment the fight is declared as signed, so boxing fans around the world should demand for a contest of this nature to be held in a great place at a fair cost to each one. My guess is a fair cost means free event and the event should be completed with a great undercard featuring fighters from international countries to make the event even bigger. Take as an example, an undercard like JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa, Wladimir Klitschko-David Haye and Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidis just to mention potential big fights in a “big night for boxing”.
