Marquez: Fans Want Pacquiao-Mayweather, Not Part 5!

By Rene Umanzor

Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez has once again dismissed the possibility of a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao. Marquez us training hard for his upcoming fight with Mike Alvarado on May 17th at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.

Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, had promised to match the Marquez-Alvarado winner against the winner of last week's rematch between Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley. Pacquiao won a twelve round unanimous decision.

Marquez has been pretty firm with his position that there is no reason for a fifth fight with Pacquiao. After three close and controversial meetings, Marquez knocked Pacquiao out in the sixth round of their fourth bout in 2012.

The Mexican icon says the boxing public has no interest in a fifth fight - they all want to see the super-fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"I think the fight that the fans want is Manny and Floyd. That's what they want to see and they should do it. I have already had four fights with Pacquiao, and many people would prefer to see these two opponents face each other in the ring. I think if we voted on what fight people want to see, I sure they would want to see Pacquiao vs Mayweather Jr. There is talk of a fifth fight [with Pacquiao], but I am not losing any sleep over it. I am preparing to fight against Alvarado and I don't care about any other fight," Marquez said.

I'm good with Pac vs JMM part 900. It's reaching Nightmare on Elm street status, so many sequels.
By the time they got to Nightmare on elm street 5, they were basically comedies. I think that's the one where Freddy is controlling the kid with the Nintendo power glove. One of the very dumbest things I've ever seen in my life. Pac/Marquez 5 better be better than that.

Schaefer thinks Arum doesn’t want Pacquiao-Mayweather fight

manny pacquiao floyd mayweather jr By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he doesn’t think that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is interested in matching his No.1 money fighter Manny Pacquiao up with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Arum says he wants to Pacquiao up against Mayweather next, and he sees Mayweather’s fight against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana as a waste of time for fans because he feels that it promises to be a mismatch. Arum also asked for fans to boycott the Mayweather-Maidana fight, and that’s something that has Schaefer feeling that Arum isn’t serious about wanting a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

The chances of boxing fans boycotting the Mayweather-Maidana fight are pretty much zero, because it’s a fight that promises to be all action, and Golden Boy Promotions has done a good job of including a good undercard with it. If anything, the Mayweather-Maidana fight will bring in 1.4 million pay-per-view buys.

“He sure knows how to get something done: By telling people to boycott Floyd’s fight, calling it a terrible matchup,” Schaefer said to the LA Times. “Is that how you negotiate or create goodwill? It doesn’t make me want to say things that would leave hope for that fight, because I don’t believe he wants the fight. This is how you do things when you don’t want to get things done.”

Arum does have an odd way of going about trying to get a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight by asking fans to boycott his fight. Arum’s stance will create bad blood, and lead to the exact opposite of what he says he wants. If Arum is serious about wanting Mayweather to face Pacquiao, he’s going about it in a ham handed manner. For a promoter with as much experience as Arum, he should know better than to try this method of getting Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions to sit down at the bargaining table.

Arum said this last Saturday night at the post-fight press conference following Pacquiao’s win over Tim Bradley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada: “If they boycott the nonsense on May 3. [Mayweather-Maidana]. That’s what the public should do. [If the media] wants that fight, tell the public not to buy pay-per-view and not to buy tickets.”

Schaefer went onto say that he’s not going to even think about a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight until Mayweather’s fight with Maidana is past them. It’s not a sure thing that Mayweather will win this fight

MIKEY GARCIA'S LAWYER: "IT'S ABOUT FAIRNESS...HE SHOULD BE OUT OF HIS CONTRACT"
By Ben Thompson | April 16, 2014
MIKEY GARCIA'S LAWYER:

"It's about fairness, and the way in which Top Rank's contract is written, it violates the law because all of the extensions and the different things that are encompassed within the contract go well beyond not only the 7-year, but also the way in which they operate. They also operate as a manager, as defined by California law, and they go beyond that term, in addition to the violations of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act and knowing or having any idea of what Top Rank is making off him...Mikey's a really smart guy and all he really wants is fairness. That doesn't mean that Mikey wouldn't sit down; if Top Rank was fair and read their own contract, on the face of the contract, he should be out of the contract," stated Bryan Freedman, lawyer of WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia, who talked about the lawsuit that was filed against Top Rank. Check it out!

BT: Bryan, I got a chance to take a look at Mikey's lawsuit. There's a lot of interesting points in there. Can you kind of just summarize what the whole situation is about?

BF: I can tell you what the situation is about. It's about fairness, and the way in which Top Rank's contract is written, it violates the law because all of the extensions and the different things that are encompassed within the contract go well beyond not only the 7-year, but also the way in which they operate. They also operate as a manager, as defined by California law, and they go beyond that term, in addition to the violations of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act and knowing or having any idea of what Top Rank is making off him.

BT: So they never provide Mikey with any documentation about the money they're making off of him?

BF: No. Not anything that complies with the Act. It's the source; it's one more time Top Rank saying we can do whatever we want and we can take advantage of whatever fighter we choose to take advantage of and extend their contract for as long as we want to, not withstanding what the law allows. You know, Mikey's a really smart guy and all he really wants is fairness. That doesn't mean that Mikey wouldn't sit down; if Top Rank was fair and read their own contract, on the face of the contract, he should be out of the contract. It's about fairness.

BT: You used some choice words in the lawsuit. You basically said, per their contract, Mikey Garcia is an indentured servant.

BF: Yep. That's exactly right. You know, look, Top Rank should be smart about this whole thing. They should read their own contract and see it goes beyond the face of what it can be and they should say, "Hey, you know, Mikey, we're sorry. Let's sit down and see if we can negotiate a new contract." I mean, that's what they should do. Because, look, at the end of the day, the contract's only going to last for so long. Even if they have an interpretation of what it is, it's still going to end, and why would they lock themselves out of the marketplace to be in a discussion with maybe one of the most attractive fighters in the next five years.

BT: Has there been any response from Top Rank yet?

BF: There has been a response that they believe that Mikey is still under contract.

BT: Obviously Top Rank's not happy about all of this. I saw Mikey was given tickets in the nosebleed seats this past weekend at Pacquiao-Bradley 2. It looks like they are ready to go to war.

BF: Well, I'll tell you one thing, the war only lasts so long, right? So you can go to war all you want, but you're going to lose the battle. Whether you lose the battle in 3 months, whether you lose the battle in 6 months, whether you lose the battle in one year, you're going to lose the battle.

Going to shoot myself if this is true

Dan Rafael
Chatter continues to intensify that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is in talks with Al Haymon. If he signs Chavez, there goes proposed GGG fight.
It would really throw a serious snag in this relationship with Top Rank and HBO. I think Al Haymon is about to separate from GBP man. Too many signs are leading to that.

Brian Campbell from ESPN was telling me that he's heard from a pretty good source that Al Haymon is paid on the side by the MGM 5-15 million for each time that Floyd fights there, and that's the reason Floyd always fights there. It's also part of the reason that the MGM is absolutely killing Mandalay Bay for fights.

Haymon knows what he's doing at this point, especially if Schaefer and he are as tight as people keep suggesting the are, no martu. It's gotta be only a matter of time before they start their own firm. I just wonder which network they'll be on.

^^ but I thought they signed and had a venue for that fight already?? that's bullshit if it becomes a reality...
Everything is done except Chavez's signature on the contract. At first there were reports that there was a delay because Top Rank was trying to work out an extension with Chavez. Now the word is it's Al Haymon trying to get Chavez. So we shall see.

Team GGG say if no Chavez he's still fighting on 7/19, but it would be in New York and at 160 pounds.

Chavez also has one fight left with HBO, so IF he does sign with Haymon it will be interesting to see if it plays out like the Stevenson situation or not (Showtime over paying for a tune up and HBO passes/doesn't match price).

What can persuade JCC Jr to go with Al Haymon is a near future fight with Canelo. That is a fight that can outsale or hang in there with Mayweather vs Canelo,( I know it sounds crazy but the hype will be felt). So not fighting GGG will pay up for Chavez in the long run. The only thing is HBO does pay Chavez good enough money that I don't see him leaving and the jump to Televisa won't work as his dad pretty much does what he wants to do at Azteca.

Also, I don't think Haymon and Shcaefer are leaving anymore as I just heard an interview with Ellerbe and DLH, with DLH praising Mayweather even. At first it made sense but when two "rivals" just keep doing business together it's all about money at the end of the day. It's to hype up the fighters that can't hang with Mayweather cuz everything Arum has said is true but we fall for what GBP says.

I'm reading that Chavez Jr was offered $47 million. If this is true and he does jump ship will people say he ducked GGG?

As for Haymon, like I said before, don't be shocked if he and his crew start offering their own PPV's instead of running them through HBO and Showtime. It can be done and most likely will be done. Years ago it was said that Al Haymon said something to the effect that if he wanted to take over boxing he could. You might be seeing that right now.

No, Chavez is not ducking GGG, this is $47 milli we are talking about. That's making him #2 priority under Floyd, right? Stevenson was asking for way more money for a warm up fight with no guarantee he was going to fight Kovalev. Now, where is Stevenson's $48 milli at?

Stevensons team released the emails and Kovalev and hbo have been silent. There was never an issue of not fighting Kovalev. What HBO wanted was multiple fights with Kovalev, the rights to additional fights and wanted to pay scraps. I already posted the links. Read.
