Dana White is a sucker for that but I think affliction will prevail on this card but not sure how they will bounce back for a star studded card on the next event

I got that affliction shirt btw from the buckle if you spend $100+ and have at least one affliction item then it's free
It's all business. Only people that really know MMA are going to be ordering the Affliction card. They've done a fairly shitty promotion job so far. I've seen way more commercials and hype from Rampage Vs. Forrest .. actually besides on the internet I haven't seen one commercial for the Affliction show.

If the UFC really sets up an Anderson Silva fight for free on SpikeTV I guarantee a shitload of people will tune in to see it. Hopefully Affliction does good and can continue to put on cards of this caliber, but competition is a motherfucker. Can't hate on that.

agree with naner.

dana white is a businessman. what do you do to protect your product and hurt theirs? have a free event on cable that competes directly with their ppv. i know that im gonna be watching the free event on spike and ill just download the affliction ppv later.

and no way affliction does better numbers than a free mma card on spike. spike is available in 95 million homes and this should get better numbers than tuf which averages over a million viewers a week. id be shocked if affliction came anywhere near those numbers.

remember the last pride event that was held in vegas (pride 34 i beleive) had a great lineup including wanderlei silva, dan henderson, fedor and others and did shitty in ppv numbers.

Brandon Vera expected to meet Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14

After a proposed bout with Wanderlei Silva failed to materialize, Brandon Vera will instead make his light-heavyweight debut against former IFL fighter and UFC newcomer Reese Andy (7-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 14.

Multiple sources close to the July 19 event tell MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the bout has been agreed upon and should be signed shortly.

As we reported earlier today, UFC Fight Night 14 will feature a main event between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and James Irvin in a non-title light-heavyweight bout. The event goes head-to-head with "Affliction: Banned."

After beginning his career with eight consecutive victories, Vera, a former top UFC heavyweight contender, has suffered back-to-back losses to Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum. The most recent loss, which came at UFC 85 on June 7, ended in controversial fashion. Werdum was raining down punches, but when the referee stepped in to stop the fight with just 20 seconds remaining in the round, Vera vehemently protested.

Prior to the losses, Vera had defeated UFC fighters Fabiano Scherner, Justin Eilers, Assueiro Silva and former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir. Despite the success -- he earned stoppages in an average of just three minutes per fight -- he was usually the much-smaller fighter.

Vera will finally make the drop to the 205-pound class when he faces Andy, a three-year vet who's spent all but two fights with the IFL. The light heavyweight, who's also competed as a middleweight and heavyweight, wrestled for the University of Wyoming, where he was a three-time All-American.

Reese, who's trained under former UFC heavyweight champion Maurice Smith, will fight for the first time in more than a year. He most recently defeated Krzysztof Soszynski via split decision at a June 2007 IFL event.

When the UFC rushed to put together an event to counter Affliction's debut show, Wanderlei Silva had been considered as an opponent for Vera -- possibly as a main-event fight. However, the organization ultimately went with Anderson Silva vs. Irvin.

Jake O'Brien vs. Cain Velasquez scheduled for July 19 UFC card

In a move surely to delight this site's readers, the UFC has re-signed UFC heavyweight Jake O'Brien (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and scheduled him to fight Cain Velasquez (3-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at the recently announced UFC Fight Night 14 -- an event that features a headline bout of Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin.

A source close to O'Brien today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the fight has been agreed upon and will be announced as official soon.

The re-signing of O'Brien comes just two months after he was dropped from the organization.

O'Brien, who has lost only to Andrei Arlovski in his professional career, was shocked in April when he was dropped from the UFC with two fights remaining on his contract. He initially called the move "very surprising," and his camp confirmed that he had no idea that his UFC career was on the line during the comeback fight.

With an upset victory over veteran fighter Heath Herring in January 2007, O'Brien pushed his UFC record to 4-0. However, a few months after the fight, he underwent surgery because of "stingers," a painful nerve injury that originates in the spine. O'Brien went under the knife, and doctors entered through his neck to implant a medal rod and cadaver discs in his spine. At first, doctors feared the injury might be career-ending. However, O'Brien underwent physical therapy and returned from a 14-month layoff to fight Arlovski, but he suffered a second-round TKO.

With the new UFC contract, O'Brien has pulled out a planned July 18 Palace Fighting Championship fight. He signed a two-fight deal with the PFC just days after being dropped by the UFC.

He'll now take on Velasquez, a product of the American Kickboxing Academy who made his UFC debut in April at UFC 83. There, he scored a first-round TKO of Brad Morris -- his third consecutive first-round knockout since turning pro in October 2006.

Velasquez, a former Arizona State University wrestler, will meet a former Purdue University wrestler in O'Brien.

UFC Fight Night 14, which airs on Spike TV, goes head-to-head with "Affliction: Banned," the debut card for the MMA clothing company turned promoter. The Affliction event, which airs on pay per view, features a main event between former PRIDE heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC title-holder Tim Sylvia.

Anthony Johnson vs. Kevin Burns bumped up to July 19 UFC event

A welterweight bout between hard-hitting Anthony Johnson (5-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and surprising UFC newcomer Kevin Burns (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) will take place at the recently announced UFC Fight Night 14 event on July 19.

Sources close to both fighters alerted MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of the bout, saying it was originally slated for a UFC 87 event in August.

UFC Fight Night 14, which takes place at The Palms Casino Resort, features UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin in a non-title light-heavyweight bout. The event airs live on Spike TV.

Johnson, an athletic and dangerous striker, most recently defeated "The Ultimate Fighter 6" runner-up Tommy Speer via violent first-round knockout. He made his octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 10 and earned a 13-second knockout of Chad Reiner, but Johnson suffered a second-round submission loss to Rich Clementi in a subsequent fight.

He'll now meet Burns, who was a late replacement for an injured Ryo Chonan earlier this month at UFC 85. There, the Iowa-based fighter scored an upset of Roan Carneiro via second-round submission -- a performance that earned him a $50,000 Submission of the Night bonus.

Like some other fights booked for UFC Fight Night 14, which was hastily put together to counter the "Affliction: Banned" pay-per-view event, the Johnson-Burns fight was simply rescheduled from a later event onto the July 19 card. It's not yet known if the fight will appear on the televised portion of the night's card.

Nick Diaz says his grudge is real

Nick Diaz candidly says he hates doing interviews. But the EliteXC lightweight contender is enraged by what he says is a false perception of him that has been created by what happened at the conclusion of the card Saturday on Showtime.

Diaz, who missed weight by eight pounds, defeated Muhsin Corbbrey with a third-round TKO in an uneventful fight at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.

Later, K.J. Noons, who had beaten Diaz for the vacant title, made his first defense by stopping Yves Edwards in the first round. Diaz was asked to go to the ring to do an interview to promote an upcoming rematch with Noons.

Tempers quickly got heated and there was pushing and shoving and nearly a full-scale riot. Diaz has taken the brunt of the heat for the incident, which looked like it came from the playbook of the WWE.

He was so angry that he did an interview to, he says, give his side of the story. And he points the finger squarely at Noons, who in one of his more charitable and less x-rated diatribes he referred to as "a poser."

But it started when he was asked to return to the ring to do an interview.

"I'm not a punk and I don't start (expletive)," Diaz said. "They brought me to the cage to do an interview about the rematch. I was doing my job. I didn't go in there like some crazy psycho (expletive). It wasn't staged. But it was all because of this (expletive) poser."

Diaz said he was upset when, after being asked if he wanted the rematch by interviewer Bill Goldberg, Noons asked the crowd what it thought. Noons was born in Hawaii and was the crowd favorite. Not surprisingly, the crowd vehemently said no.

Diaz asked Noons why he was afraid and he made an obscene gesture. Then, the pushing and shoving ensued.

But Diaz said it didn't end then. He said Monday he ran into Noons and his family after returning from a long run Sunday and that another confrontation ensued.

Again, he said, it was precipitated by Noons.

"My car pulled up in front of the hotel and he and his girlfriend and his mom and dad were there," Diaz said. "Right away, he put his mug on me. He was staring me down and trying to give the impression that he's hard core. I flipped him off, but he's standing over there like he's flashing. I go, ‘What the (expletive) are you doing? I'm not the one doing (expletive).' I couldn't understand why this guy is putting his mug on me, but he had to act like he was some kind of a (expletive) tough guy in front of his girlfriend and his Dad."

Diaz said the sides have had numerous run-ins. He said he can't wait to fight Noons so the feud can end.

But most importantly, he said, he doesn't want fans to think he's a punk or that he staged Saturday's incident a la pro wrestling.

"This is war, this is life, and I take this very seriously," Diaz said. "I'm not the one bringing my family into the ring and showing them off. I'm not the one who (showed up to the pre-fight news conference) in a (expletive) suit trying to act like I'm some kind of tough guy (expletive) rich kid. This is war to me and we have a serious situation on our hands now."

And with that, let's get on to slightly less serious issues. I'll address your questions on a variety of MMA topics, with my answers in italics.

CHRIS LEBEN'S RETURN FROM "OZ"

Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight Chris Leben is walking the streets of Oahu, Hawaii again after serving 11 days in a Portland, Ore. jail. After being released, he visited Seattle for a brief training stint with former coach Matt Hume at AMC Pankration, assisting Jorge Gurgel for his bout with Cole Miller at UFC 86. Now, he’s back at the ICON Sport gym in the Aloha state, putting his life back together.

The original cast member of “The Ultimate Fighter” turned himself in to authorities on April 30 after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Leben was sentenced to 35 days in jail for violating the terms of his probation stemming from a 2005 DUI charge, but was allowed an early release to serve the remainder of his time under “home detention.”

He was originally scheduled to fight Michael Bisping at UFC 85 in London, but was forced to cede the fight to Jason Day when his sentence was passed down.

It was not the first time Leben had been to jail – he says he was imprisoned for the same charge in his last stay – but it carried greater consequences than ever before. Sitting in his cell, Leben had nothing but time to think about the mistakes he had made.

“I was really down,” he told MMAWeekly.com. “I really, really wanted to fight Bisping.”

For all the gripping images that jail sometimes conjures, it’s a monumentally boring experience. Especially for a guy like Leben, who isn’t exactly a mellow-yellow personality.

“It was claustrophobic,” he said. “The roofs are really short, you’re breathing in all this recycled air, everything’s white concrete. You don’t have a lot of space; there’s no windows to see outside. Sometimes you have to sit down, take a deep breath, (and say) time will pass.”

And it did, albeit like watching paint dry. There was no way for Leben to stay in shape. He was a highly trained athlete with nowhere to work out. He went old-school, doing push-ups and sit-ups in his cell. A modern MMA gym it was not. The prison administration wouldn’t even let him outside into “the yard.” It’s not clear where he got this fact, but Leben said the jail had the distinction of being the third most dangerous in the nation.

“As soon as I started to do anything, everyone was like ‘what are you doing?’” he recalled. “Training martial arts probably isn’t the best thing to do around a bunch of felons.”

You’d think that being a professional fighter might paint a target on his back, but Leben encountered more curiosity from his fellow inmates than anything else. They wanted him to show them some moves. Happy to oblige, he once demonstrated a choke on an inmate while 20 others watched.

“I told the guys it’s a blood choke, so you don’t have to squeeze hard,” he said. “So I was just kind of choking him with one arm while he’s standing up. And I told him just tap when you start to feel like you’re going to pass out. Well, he didn’t tap, and at the time I’m going wow, this guy’s pretty tough, I’m surprised he hasn’t tapped yet. He just drops to the floor in the cell.

“Now I’m standing there with 20 prisoners around and they’re freaking out. This guy’s laying there, snoring like crazy. I’m like ‘it’s all right, it’s all right,’ then I realize they have cameras in here. I’ve just choked this guy out in jail – I could get in trouble for this. I kept telling them, ‘he’s fine, he’s fine,’ and it took this guy a minute to wake up. Finally he woke up and we had a laugh, and luckily I didn’t get in any trouble for it. That was beginning and the ending of my inmate coaching career.”

Not surprisingly, Leben said the entire experience was a wake up call for him. He realized he wasn’t a 21-year-old anymore, and there was a lot more for him to lose. He couldn’t run away from his problems, or punch through them.

“I’m more or less someone who’s got a few issues,” he said. “It made me realize I should have just taken care of it. You’ve got 150 students who want to know where you’re at; you’ve got a top-level fight you’re missing. You need to be taking care of yourself. It gave me a lot of time to evaluate my life.”

Leben has not spoken to UFC officials since getting out of jail, but feels confident he will be fighting in the next few months. He would seem a prime candidate for the UFC’s impromptu “Ultimate Fight Night” card being held on July 19, but says he doubts he could be ready in time. As of now, he is eyeing an August return to the Octagon.

“I don’t want to go out there and compete because I can,” he said. “Right now I want to focusing on making me the best I’ve ever been.”

Ricardo Almeida: ‘I dont see this fight going three rounds’ against Patrick Cote at UFC 86

“It is a classic grappler versus striker matchup. I think it is no secret I want to get [Patrick Cote] down and he wants to keep it on the feet. Cote is very aggressive as I also try to be. His way or my way I don’t see this fight going three rounds…. I have been working on my boxing for a while now. Don’t expect me to all of a sudden start knocking people out but I have been sparring with some pro boxers and actually feel even more comfortable on my feet. To me the stand up game is like playing roulette but I can always rely on my Jiu Jitsu. You will see me looking to take the fight to the ground almost one hundred of the time.”

Ricardo Almeida talks about his game plan and thoughts heading into his middleweight tilt with Patrick Cote at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5. It’s a fight that will catapult the winner very close to a title shot against UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

MMA Quick Quote: Affliction MMAs Tom Atencio ‘flattered’ with UFC counter programming

“It’s just an example of how they want to control everything but at the same time it’s flattering as well. I guess they do view us as threat … absolutely.”

– MMARated.com captures the initial reaction of Affliction MMA Vice President of Entertainment, Tom Atencio, regarding the surprising news that the UFC has put together a free night of fights on less than five weeks notice the same night the upstart mixed martial arts promotion has planned its first-ever pay-per-view (PPV) event. It’s a move that could significantly impact buys on July 19, which Affliction MMA is banking on to offset its large payroll and production costs. UFC President Dana White, however, recently denied that UFC Fight Night 14 was a counter programming maneuver, saying that he is simply “giving the fans what they want. And Silva just wants to fight more.”

Next Elite XC show on CBS ‘Unfinished Business’ card takes shape for July 26

With less than six weeks until next installment of “Saturday Night Fights” event on CBS, Elite XC doesn’t have much time to make this thing happen. Accordingly, the wheels are in motion to put together a solid card on July 26 that will appeal to a nationwide television audience just three days removed from Elite XC: “Return of the King.”

As we mentioned earlier, “Unfinished Business” will feature a rematch between Elite XC Middleweight Champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler and Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith. The pair put on a show in their first encounter last month, only to have the bout halted in the third round because of an inadvertent eye poke, resulting in a disappointing “No contest.”

Had the bout been able to resume it could have turned out to be the best fight in the history of the young organization. Therefore, a rematch was a must … and is definitely worthy of main event status.

Top welterweight stand out Jake Shields has also been tapped to make an appearance; however, he will likely not take on Drew Fickett. Several reports have indicated that Nick Thompson, Jay Hieron or Paul “Semtex” Daley are all possible opponents to fight Shields for the vacant welterweight crown.

In addition, Elite XC is considering a heavyweight fight — that could also have heavyweight title implications — that includes Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, according to SI.com. An opponent for Bigfoot is also unknown at this time, but IFL champ Roy “Big Country” Nelson’s name has been mentioned by numerous outlets as the top choice.

And a female match between Shayna Baszler and Kelly Kobald is also being talked about. The promotion’s most marketable female fighter, Gina Carano, will likely return to action for the third televised CBS show sometime in the fall. It could possibly mark the first-ever woman’s championship in the newly designed 145 pound weight class.

The winner of the fight between Baszler and Kobald, in theory, would be a likely choice for that spot.

Besides having two (or possibly three) title fights headlining the network broadcast, Elite XC is also exploring additional options to spice up the action — a joint CBS/Showtime telecast. The plan being discussed will have Showtime air a 60- to 90-minute show with three or four fights starting at 7:30 p.m. ET that would serve as a lead-in to the CBS main card telecast at 9 p.m. ET.

Wilson Reis — who competed on the under card of the May 31 show and dominated Justin Robbins with his sensational Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills en route to winning with a first round rear naked choke — is expected to be featured on the Showtime portion of the joint-telecast.

It seems like a great idea on paper, but Elite XC had a lot of problems keeping the last “Saturday Night Fights” event within the scheduled two-hour time slot. And that card was set up for a lot of quick finishes. With this event looking to be more of a competitive one, and having three potential five-round fights, those time problems could certainly persist.

The Sawis Center in St. Louis, Missouri, is being looked at as a possible venue for the night. However, no location has been made official at this time.

Report: Lorenzo Fertitta leaving Station Casinos to work full-time for UFC

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, UFC president Dana White announced to the promotion’s employees today that UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta is resigning as president of Station Casinos, the casino business that he co-owns with brother Frank Fertitta.

The report indicates that Fertitta will now work for the UFC on a full-time basis with the goal of expanding the company’s overall business. Meltzer also states that Fertitta and White will be the “co-heads of the UFC.”

As president of Station Casinos, Fertitta earned $113.8 million in 2007, according to Meltzer. The total made him the second-highest paid casino executive in Las Vegas last year.

Frank Fertitta III is now solely in charge of Station Casinos as the company’s CEO.

It is unclear whether today’s announcement is the same one that White had hinted at several weeks ago during an ESPN.com interview or if he had something else in mind at the time that ultimately fell through. After using strong language to describe the forthcoming announcement, White attempted to downplay its impact in recent interviews.

In an article by Yahoo! Sports, White took a proactive approach in addressing potential criticism that his announcement may not have been all that he initially promoted it to be.

“The Internet may not consider this huge news, but what the people on the Internet think is huge and what I think is huge are two different things,” White is quoted as saying in the article. “But you know what? I think I have a pretty good track record. I think this is maybe the biggest day in UFC history. I’m so excited, I can’t begin to explain it to you. This is an historic day for me and this company.”

NOT FLASHY, BUT FERTITTA EXPANDS ROLE WITH UFC

After weeks of speculation, the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Wednesday finally let its employees in on “the big announcement” that everyone has been bantering about. According to Kevin Iole at Yahoo Sports, co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta has resigned his position as president of Station Casinos to take on a more active role in the UFC.

As mentioned by both Fertitta and company president Dana White in Iole’s report, the move is not a condemnation of White’s performance as president of the company, but rather an indication of how much growth the company has undergone and intends to sustain in the future.

Fertitta is expected to focus on developing the international business of the company as the UFC expands into Germany and other European countries, the Philippines and other Asian countries, Australia, and South America.

Speculation about White’s “big announcement” has centered on everything from a network TV deal to a change in ownership to taking the company public and everything in between. So as White said in his comments to Iole, the Internet-based MMA community as a whole probably won’t see this as a significant announcement. That is primarily because most of the fans that follow the sport are concerned with the fighters and the fights, not the behind the scenes business of the company.

It should, however, be noted that despite it’s lack of glitz to either the casual or hardcore fight fan, Fertitta’s resignation from Station Casinos – a billion dollar a year company – to take a more prominent role in the future of the UFC is anything but insignificant.

Fertitta would not leave his position as one of the highest paid casino executives in Las Vegas, especially as the company is aggressively developing new properties, if there wasn’t just cause to believe the UFC was undergoing its own significant growing phase.

There likely won’t be any immediate changes for the casual fan to notice in the short term, but as the company expands its reach across the globe, there will be numerous developments that fans will appreciate, but not likely know to credit to Fertitta’s expanded involvement.
