When Street Cred Goes Wrong
Today we find so many artists that come up in the streets and discover a rap talent within themselves that instantly gives them a chance to break away in a positive way from those same streets. Many of these dudes take the same hustle that they applied in the streets and use it to maneuver through the local rap scene and before you know it their name is buzzing in rap circles.
However having a name that’s buzzing on the local scene and translating that into revenue from rap is a different story, therefore you have many rappers that continue to mingle in illegal activity to fund their budding rap careers. Very few take the 9-5 route while rapping to make sure that they are free and clear if a bigger opportunity happens to arise.
The point Im getting at is we have to know when God is giving us a way out and make the most out of the opportunity that is given to us. Most of us as artists are able to compose the soundtrack to our life , which so many others can relate to. We grab peoples support and attention and become popular artists in our area because people feel we are real in what we rap about. What artists have to realize is we can speak on what we have been through, heard about or seen without having to leave the studio and go out and continue doing those things.
Theres a saying that you cant mix “truth with falsehood” the truth is “God has given you a talent and a drive and provided you a way out of the streets”, the falsehood is “you taking that blessing for granted and trying to straddle the fence bringing bad Karma to a good situation”. We have so many examples of when “Street Cred Goes Wrong” among loal rappers and among super stars. Its mathematically impossible to get successful and remain successful bringing a criminal element along with you for the ride, at some point it will sink the ship.
Learn from your mistakes and have faith in the gift that God has given you and hopefully you wont be the cover story of the next episode of “When Street Cred Goes Wrong”
