Edgar Wright’s ‘Ant-Man’ Homework Hints at Multiple Ant-Men

Posted on Monday, January 6th, 2014 by Angie Han

Last month, we finally learned after months of rumor and speculation that Ant-Man would be played by none other than Paul Rudd in Edgar Wright‘s movie. What we did not find out was whom Rudd would actually be playing. There are multiple Ant-Men in the Marvel Comics canon, and so far there’s been no official confirmation about which version of the character we’re getting.
But perhaps Marvel’s being coy because we’re not getting an Ant-Man, but multiple Ant-Men. In a cryptic blog post (is there any other kind, when it comes to directors entrusted with big geeky properties?) Wright revealed a tiny detail about the research he’s doing for the film, and it suggests that we might get to meet Scott Lang and Hank Pym in the new movie.

Wright posted the following photo with the simple caption “homework” on his blog.

The photo doesn’t look like much, but Coming Soon reports that it is a still from the animated series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Specifically, the episode “To Steal an Ant-Man,” which is based on Marvel Premiere #47. The issue has Scott Lang stealing Hank Pym’s Ant-Man suit to commit a crime, but he ultimately comes back around to the side of good and becomes the new Ant-Man with Pym’s blessing.

The clue lends credence to the speculation, which has been swirling for a while now, that Ant-Man would feature both characters. Adding further credence to the theory is the fact that Wright himself mentioned way back when that he wanted to do a film about both, and that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has described Ant-Man as a “heist film.”

The popular assumption has been that Pym would be the Ant-Man we saw in the film. He’s the original Ant-Man and probably the most famous one, and Wright confirmed this summer that Pym would be in the film. But the new hint doesn’t contradict that, exactly. It just indicates that Pym might not be the only Ant-Man in the movie.

But that’s assuming Wright is indeed basing his film on this story arc, and that he’s doing so faithfully. Those are pretty big ifs considering how often superhero films directors take liberties with the source material. We’ll know for certain when Ant-Man hits July 31, 2015.

‘Ant-Man’: Michael Douglas to star as Hank Pym in Marvel movie

“Behind the Candelabra” actor Michael Douglas will star in “Ant-Man,” Edgar Wright’s 2015 comic book adventure for Marvel.

Douglas is set to play original Avengers member Hank Pym, Marvel announced on its website Monday. In the comics, Dr. Pym is a scientist who invents a shrinking serum that allows him to sneak around in miniature form and surprise foes.

“With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said in the announcement. “We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”

Douglas joins previously announced star Paul Rudd, who is set to play Scott Lang. In the comics, Lang is a reformed thief and the second superhero to take the name Ant-Man.

“Ant-Man” is slated for a July 31, 2015 theatrical release. It’s unclear whether either incarnation of the diminutive hero will appear in writer-director Joss Whedon’s upcoming “Avengers” sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which also is set for release in 2015. In the comics, Pym is the creator of Ultron, an automaton that becomes a supervillain.

Wright embarks on “Ant-Man” after the success of this summer’s “The World’s End,” his third collaboration with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The trio’s Cornetto Trilogy — “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “World’s End” — established Wright as an especially beloved figure among the fan community, his films fusing humor and heart within genre trappings.

Wright’s been attached to the project for some time — he debuted “Ant-Man” test footage that showcased the helmeted hero growing and shrinking in size at Comic-Con in 2012.

What do you think of Douglas’ casting? Let us know in the comments.

The first iteration of this script was written before MARVEL had the MCU firmly affixed. Scott Lang steals the suit from Hank Pym, and Pym gives chase. That's actually how Lang became the second Ant-Man.

Probably not any time soon, as long as tickets are being sold.

With their NETFLIX deal stretching their TV presence to 2018, and their films already being slated through 2021, you're in for a long ride if you hate them.

The X-Force film script is going to fit in somewhere between DofP and Apocalypse films. The writer Jeff Wadlow, and overlord Rob Liefeld, have finished the script. Liefeld has had a few tweets recently regarding the script.

I'm positive you'll get your Cable movie.

There aren't any details regarding if the story follows Age of Apocalypse, but at the risk of sounding redundant, MARVEL did change the name of the film to "X-Men: Apocalypse" more than likely because they have already given the "Age of" title to "The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron".
This is you, isn't it!?

looks pretty great based on last seconds

its possible that this movie will have coolest action scenes off any marvel movie

i hope agent carter show got a tie in episode with this
I bet it does, given that Michael Douglas' Hank Pym had created the technology in the past. It would put him directly in line with Howard Stark and the SSR. I won't be surprised to find out that he and Howard Stark were integral in creating the Ant-Man suit in the MCU. They could throw a young Hank Pym into the SSR as a scientist before he creates the technology, and that would cement him into the film world's canon.

Dope movie. Stay after the credits if anyone goes and sees it. There were two post credit scenes, one after the animated credits and another after the normal white word credits.

Fuuucckk. What was after the white word credits? I left
