Typically, July and August suck for boxing so this isn't too terribly bad.

I might opt to go to the theater to see Canelo/Lara if the price isn't stupid.

Golovkin Shows Star Muscle, MSG Fight a Hot Ticket

By Jake Donovan

Less than 2,000 tickets remain for Gennady Golovkin’s highly anticipated July 26 middleweight tile fight with Daniel Geale, which also marks debut in the main room at Madison Square Garden.

The bout, which will air live on HBO, marks the first stateside appearance of 2014 for Golovkin (29-0, 26KOs), whose lone fight this year took place in Monte Carlo.

The unbeaten knockout artist from Kazakhstan played Madison Square Garden’s Theatre venue three times in 2013. With his popularity rising with each visit, it was decided by his team that it was time to graduate to the main room.

“Gennady will be the first fighter besides Miguel Cotto to carry an event in the big arena since 2008,” points out Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions and the driving force behind Golovkin’s soaring popularity in the United States. “Wladimir Klitschko sold out the arena, and Roy Jones fought twice there (versus Felix Trinidad and Joe Calzaghe) that year. Every other event since then has been headlined by Miguel Cotto since then.

“That’s how much marketability we’ve built. Gennady fits into that elite category.”

The venue is sectioned off for 9,000 seats plus luxury suites, which would seat roughly 3,000 more.

Golovkin is coming off of a 7th round knockout of Osumana Adama this past February, his first fight this year following a breakout campaign in 2013. A planned stateside return was on the docket for April, but was canceled when Golovkin was forced to withdraw from his scheduled title defense versus Andy Lee due to the untimely passing of his father.

The last fight in New York City for Golovkin came last November, when he knocked out Curtis Stevens in eight rounds. The event - which served as HBO’s third highest-rated fight of the year - was attended by 4,618 paying patrons, just two tickets short of a sellout.

With the current ticket sale trend, Golovkin figures to at least double that amount for his showdown with Geale (30-2, 16KO), a former titlist who has won nine of his 10 last bouts. The lone loss among that stretch ended his title reign, falling just short in a disputed split decision against Darren Barker in their sizzling 12-round war last August.

“We’re excited about Gennady coming back to Madison Square Garden,” Loeffler said of his fighter’s return to New York City. “It’s fitting that his first fight in the big arena comes against his highest profile to date.”

The expectation heading into the event was to fill up the lower bowl. With nearly all of the VIP seats sold out and barely 100 tickets left at the next highest price range ($542), it’s entirely possible that more tickets will be made available to satisfy demand, for a card coming on the heels of Miguel Cotto’s upset technical knockout win over Sergio Martinez to claim the middleweight crown in June.

“We’ve taken a conservative approach to the full arena. That’s why we didn’t scale to the entire arena,” Loeffler says of the original marketing strategy. We’re pleased with ticket sales so far.”

50 Cent has birthday bash ruined after his boxer Mark Davis is beaten by Filipono fighter Michael Farenas

50 Cent had his birthday celebrations ruined on Wednesday night after his fighter Mark Davis had his unbeaten bout record ended by Michael Farenas from the Phillipines.

Highlight Video of the beating HERE

The rapper/actor/boxing promoter had arranged the bout as part of a fight night in Connecticut, USA broadcast on ESPN as part of the festivities for his 39th birthday.

But it was spoiled for him after the Filipino fighter dominated Davis throughout and eventually stopped him in the eighth round.

The win improved 30-year-old Farenas' record to 39 win from 47 fight, including 32 knockouts. And more importantly, his victory puts him in line to challenge for the IBF Junior Lightweight belt later this year.

For the previously unbeaten Davis, however, it is back to the drawing board for him and his promoter, as they look to rebuild following the setback.

Here's hoping, though, that 50 Cent still managed to enjoy his birthday.

Did you watch the fight? Farenas beat him down, couldn't miss with his left. Sets up a fight between him and the winner of the Mendez/Barthelemy rematch.

Way too big of a step up for Davis who went from fighting walk overs to a guy who had never been stopped, still young, former title challenger, and not to mention being a good southpaw that can punch.

For anyone that wants to check it out..

Before the start of the Canelo Alvarez-Erislandy four-fight Showtime PPV card on July 12 (9 p.m. ET), Showtime announced that it will air bantamweight titleholder Tomoki Kameda’s defense against former titleholder Pungluang Sor Singyo from the undercard during its “Canelo-Lara: Countdown Live” (7:30 p.m. ET).

Japan’s Kameda (29-0, 18 KOs), who turns 23 on the day of the fight, will be making his second title defense, a mandatory against Sor Singyo (46-2, 31 KOs), 26, of Thailand. They will both be fighting in the United States for the first time.

Sor Singyo will be fighting for his old belt. He stopped A.J. Banal in the ninth round to win the 118-pound title in October 2012 in the Philippines and lost it in his first defense by unanimous decision to Paulus Ambunda in March 2013 in Namibia. Ambunda lost the belt in his first defense to Kameda by unanimous decision in August 2013 in the Philippines.

Kameda is one of the fighting Kameda brothers who have all won world titles, including Koki (bantamweight) and Daiki (junior bantamweight). At one point, they all held world titles simultaneously, the first time in boxing history three brothers had done that.

It was a beat down man. Barthelemy should handle Farenas after he KO's Mendez again next week. That card looks pretty decent. I see Yunier Doritos (that's how I spell it haha) is fighting Edison Miranda. Baby steps. I like this guy. Jeff Lacy is on the card I believe for some odd reason too.

Yeah it's a cool card. Didn't know Dorticos was fighting Miranda on it. Lacy's just there for Savigne to beat, who would've been further on but took a bad KO loss early in his career. Just came to the states to old to make much happen.

Hopefully they air the Gonzalez & Lubin fights somewhere.

I think we might go to the theater again to watch this fight. My wife hates boxing but she wants to see Mares fight. She only remembers him from getting taxed by Gonzalez but still wants to see him fight again lol
