Only angle I can see with Clottey is he fought and gave Cotto a tough fight and I'm sure their planning on fighting each other in May.

But Clottey hasn't fought on US TV since Pacquiao, Kirkland fight would be much bigger
Not only that, with Kirkland's style he has a better chance of stopping Kirkland than he does Clottey. Clottey may not have the prettiest style but he can make you look bad in victory or defeat. The Cotto angle is really the only thing that makes sense at this point.

He has another fight scheduled this Wed against undefeated fighter Abdu Rafik, so he's getting back on track. I'm sure he went 7 rounds on purpose so that more names would be willing to fight the GOAT
Yeah he can't keep knocking people out the 1st, who wants to fight that killer? He probably had to fight Maz with 18oz gloves just so he could last that long.

Ok so now rumors of James Kirkland vs Cotto.

I think this is what happened:

Canelo and Cotto both want fights at the end of this year. HBO can't afford to have both big fights unless they are on PPV, which Canelo doesn't want to do. They can get Clottey for cheap. Cotto wants a PPV fight but fighting a guy like Andy Lee (who was the original planned opponent) wouldn't sell well at all, so enter James Kirkland. Cotto vs Kirkland is a fight people would pay for. So they'll probably have Canelo vs Clottey on regular HBO, which they'll use to hype/promote the Cotto/Kirkland PPV the following week.

If that's the case, I'm totally down for that.

Roach: How long before Mayweather fires Ariza?

freddie roach floyd mayweather jr By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach says he’s happy to hear that his former strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza is working out with WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr, but Roach wonders how long it’ll be before Ariza gets fired from his job.

It’s still officially confirmed whether Ariza is actually working with Mayweather. It could be that they had one workout and that was it.

“It’s unusual that they hired him [Ariza], but maybe they want to get some information on how he [Maidana] fights,” Roach said to Radio Raheem. “In my opinion, he knows absolutely nothing about the fight game, but they can have him so I’m happy. But how long before he gets fired again? We’ll see. He has a track record that’s not so good.”

Roach fired Ariza last year from working with Pacquiao after he helped him gain weight and bulk up to win titles at welterweight and junior middleweight. Ariza would later work with Marcos Maidana, Brandon Rios and Mikey Garcia at Robert Garcia’s Oxnard Gym. Ariza appeared to do a good job of building size for those fighters. But Garcia recently let Ariza go as well.

Ariza can help Mayweather with his conditioning program with the little time left that he has before the fight.

Some boxing fans felt that Roach didn’t like the idea of Ariza encroaching into his territory by helping out in the corner. In looking at it from the outside, it look like Ariza was just trying to help out. But Roach didn’t like it and he eventually pulled the plug with Ariza working with Pacquiao after checking it out with Pacquiao first.

Strength and conditioning coaches are just like trainers. They come and go. Roach has been dumped by fighters himself, so it’s not as if it’s just Ariza who’s losing his job. Amir Khan and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr both stopped working with Roach. I’m sure there’s a lot more than just those two who decided they wanted to look elsewhere for a trainer.

Canelo wants Cotto fight to take place in Las Vegas

Canelo Cotto Canelo vs. Cotto saul alvarez miguel cotto By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and trainer Freddie Roach are going to need forget about fighting former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at Madison Square Garden in New York; because Canelo says he’s interested in fighting Cotto in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach recently spoke of wanting Canelo to travel to New York to fight Cotto in front of his own fans, but he thinks Canelo will be afraid to do that. I’m not sure if it’s fear of Cotto for Canelo possibly not being keen on the idea of fighting in front of a large pro-Cotto crowd in New York, but rather Canelo not wanting to put himself in the position where he could end up losing the fight by a controversial decision.

“It could be held in May in Las Vegas,” Canelo said to Esto about a fight against Cotto. “My idea was to end the year as world champion, but perhaps wait for the next year, depending on what suits.

“I don’t think he’s brave enough to go into the lion’s den,” Freddie Roach said about Canelo likely not wanting to fight Cotto at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy are still trying to figure out who his next opponent will be in November or December. Joshua Clottey, James Kirkland and Demetrius Andrade have been mentioned as possible opponents.

Clottey’s name is the strangest one on the list, because he’s only fought a handful of times since his one-sided loss to Manny Pacquiao back in 2010. Clottey did recently defeat Australian Anthony Mundine, but only hardcore boxing fans in the United States know about that fight.

Clottey has been out of the loop for so long that the newer casual boxing fans have no idea who he is. Hardcore boxing fans know who Clottey is, but they likely would have very, very little interest in seeing Clottey vs. Canelo. That’s fight that’s on par with Canelo’s recent mismatch against Alfredo Angulo. Canelo-Clottey is a weak fight in my view. No wonder Canelo reportedly is going to make his next fight on regular Showtime rather than pay-per-view. How would Canelo sell a fight against Clottey? If this was 2010, before Clottey was easily beaten by Manny Pacquiao, it still wouldn’t sell. Clottey is now 36 and not the fighter he was years ago, but perhaps that’s why he’s being targeted by Canelo.

Canelo is coming off of a disappointing 12 round decision win over Erislandy Lara last July. Canelo appeared to lose the fight in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans, but instead in giving Lara a rematch, Canelo is moving on with a certain amount of stink following him from his tainted win.

Roach wants Cotto to fight Mayweather after Canelo

saul alvarez miguel cotto freddie roach floyd mayweather jr By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach say that he wants his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto to fight one more guy after his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next year, and that’s a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Cotto would then retire after those two fights without facing Gennady Golovkin. As far as Cotto’s next fight on December 13th, Roach said Andy Lee or James Kirkland is two of the names they’re looking at.

Kirkland is a junior middleweight, and Lee fights at 154 and 160. If Cotto does face Mayweather and Canelo in his last two fights of his career then he’d be defending his WBC middleweight title in back to back fights against non-middleweights. If Cotto fights Kirkland then it would be three straight fights for Cotto against non-middleweights.

I don’t know of any middleweights champions in the past that have fought three straight fights against non-middleweights in defending their titles. Cotto would be a world champion 160 in name only if he’s defending over and over and over again against non-middleweights.

The thing is that Cotto might not be able to do this while holding onto the WBC middleweight title because Golovkin is fighting WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio in October. If Golovkin wins that fight, then he’ll be the mandatory challenger for Cotto.

The World Boxing Council will allow Cotto to fight his voluntary defense in December and then another voluntary defense in May against Canelo, but after that, Cotto will need to defend against his mandatory challenger. He can’t have three voluntary defenses in a row. He can maybe take a unification fight if he wants to, but there’s no one for him to fight that has a name. Golovkin would likely knock Cotto out worse than Antonio Margarito did, Sam Soliman would out-box him, and Peter Quillin would be too big for him.

“I don’t think Canelo would love it,” Roach said to Radio Raheem in regards to Canelo fighting Cotto at Madison Square Garden. “I don’t think he’s brave enough to go into the lion’s den. There’s one guy out there that he said he can knockout if he’s in the kind of shape. Mayweather. There could be a rematch. He [Cotto] said ‘Freddie, if I fought him if I was in this kind of shape [the shape Cotto was when he beat 39-year-old Sergio Martinez] you got me in, I would have knocked him out.”

Roach then added that he thinks Mayweather will pull out of his rematch with Marcos Maidana next month saying, “Don’t be surprised if he pulls out of that fight.”

Roach also recently said don’t be surprised if Mayweather retires after the Maidana fight. So Roach is kind of on the retirement thing with him thinking Mayweather will retire either before or after the Maidana fight in order to presumably avoid fights.

Mayweather already beat Cotto by slugging with him. I don’t see there being any difference in a rematch. But if Mayweather does take that fight and beats Cotto a second time, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Roach saying they were robbed and that they would beat him in a third fight if they were in tip top condition.

If you look at the kind of condition Cotto was in for the Mayweather fight in 2012, there’s no way Cotto wasn’t in the best shape for that fight. He’s 2 years older now, and I don’t think he’s even as good as he was when he fought Mayweather in 2012, and he’s definitely not as good a fighter as the one that Antonio Margarito destroyed in 2008.

I expect Cotto to get knocked out by Canelo next year, and I fully expect him to get knocked out by Kirkland if he fights him in December. Andy Lee is beatable, but why is Cotto taking a soft job like that age 33? It doesn’t make sense other than it being a title milking fight without Cotto fighting a real threat to him at 160.

Mayweather accuses Pacquiao of being on PEDs while with strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza. Hires Alex Ariza. Brilliant!

Really?! And some wonder why people say Haymon is bad for boxing. What a joke Quillin would be of he turns down $1.4 million dollars, waaaay more than this fight is worth.

Quillin-Korobov in trouble?

By Dan Rafael | September 1, 2014

Peter Quillin would earn a career-high purse for his mandatory title defense against Matt Korobov.
Middleweight contender Matt Korobov has signed for his mandatory shot against titlist "Kid Chocolate" Peter Quillin, doing so last week after promoter Top Rank received the contract from Roc Nation Sports, the sports agency founded by music mogul Jay Z that is now licensed as a boxing promoter.

But Quillin's side? Pretty much radio silence, according to Roc Nation Sports, which shocked everyone by winning a purse bid for the fight for a whopping $1,904,840 to handily defeat two other bids by Quillin promoter Golden Boy Promotions ($1,207,000) and Korobov promoter Top Rank ($515,000).

The Korobov side couldn't wait to sign. It received the contract from Roc Nation Sports, asked for a minor adjustment and returned the signed contract with no issues, according to both Roc Nation Sports and Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti.

The Quillin side, however, has been almost silent, which is perplexing when you consider the money on the table from Roc Nation Sports' clear overbid.

Roc Nation Sports is looking to make a splash in boxing, and it certainly has everyone's attention now.

It plans to put the fight on Nov. 1 in Quillin's hometown at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as long as he signs for the fight. Roc Nation Sports originally intended to put the fight on Nov. 8, but moved off the date so as not to conflict with the HBO telecast of the Bernard Hopkins-Sergey Kovalev light heavyweight unification bout that night in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

There is no television deal yet for Quillin-Korobov, but the date and site are locked in after Barclays Center agreed to move a concert off Nov. 1 to accommodate the fight for Jay Z.

"Top Rank requested a change which we made and are very excited about the fight," Michael Yormark, president and chief of branding and strategy for parent company Roc Nation, told ESPN.com.

The Quillin side, however, was not nearly as excited as Top Rank/Korobov, even though Quillin stands to make by far his biggest purse -- more than $1.4 million, which is more than three times his biggest payday.

According to Yormark, Golden Boy asked for an extension to sign the contract, which the WBO granted. Instead of being due back by Aug. 28, the deadline was extended to Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.

"With the exception of asking for an extension they have been very quiet, which is unusual with this kind of purse on the table," Yormark said. "We don't understand why they haven't rushed to sign this contact or ask for changes to move this fight forward. We're not sure. We're puzzled. We're very curious. With Top Rank, there was 100 percent cooperation. With Golden Boy, there seems to be indifference."

Yormark's speculation is that perhaps Al Haymon, Quillin's adviser, is not so eager to finalize the deal, that perhaps he has other plans.

Even still, what other fight out there in the coming months could Haymon get Quillin that would pay him anything close to what the Korobov fight will? There isn't one. And for any other fight Quillin would also have to give up his title.

"I have to tell you that it feels that way," Yormark said of his belief that Haymon is trying to block the fight. "We are concerned but at the same time very puzzled.

"For us this is about the fighters, like it is with our other clients [in other sports and entertainment]. We want to make sure the fighters get paid. They deserve to get paid. These guys deserve to get paid the amount of money we [bid]. Both of them deserve it. They earned those dollars and we're anxious to move forward for them and put this fight on."

If Quillin doesn't sign by the deadline, he could be stripped of his title and would lose out on the payday.

Golden Boy vice president Eric Gomez told ESPN.com it requested the delay in the contract deadline because Quillin's wife gave birth to their first child (a boy) last week and wanted him to enjoy some family time.

"His baby was just born so we asked for a little more time so he can be with his family and then review [the contract] with his attorney. He's not rushing to meet with his attorney a few days after the baby was born," Gomez said. "There are also concerns from Al about the TV because Peter is a Showtime fighter and he's trying to figure out the TV. It is a concern if you are a manager who has a fighter who fights regularly on Showtime and all of a sudden you are on a different network. There's something out there known as an image. There is some concern there. But the money is great.

"Out of respect to Peter and his wife he wanted a little bit more time [to sign] and the WBO granted it."

Three thoughts:

1. With that much money at stake, you'd think Quillin would sign the paperwork as soon as humanly possible, as long as it was a good contract, especially with a new member of the family to support.

2. Quillin is not contractually signed to Showtime or any other network. None of Haymon's clients are with the exception of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Amir Khan, both of whom have Showtime deals.

3. Roc Nation Sports said it would be happy to make a TV deal for the bout with Showtime -- or any other network interested.

As of Monday evening, there still had been no additional communication between Golden Boy and Roc Nation Sports on the deal. It'll be interesting to see what happens at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday.

What a joke if he doesn't sign it. I'm just glad that at least if he doesn't sign the fight he'll be stripped of his belt.

2-0-Sixx @2-0-Sixx , let me know if you have somewhere that's gonna stream the Yaegashi/Gonzalez card on Friday morning.

If Quillin doesn't sign the contract by Wednesday, that would be Haymon's and GBP's way of black balling Roc Nation. No matter what, Showtime will pay Quilling good so Quillin has nothing to worry about financially as long as he doesn't take an L. Now Roc Nation would be stuck with a fight that not one network would want to carry.

If Quillin doesn't sign he's stripped of his belt. Quillin without his title is worthless and he'll likely never see a $1.4 million dollar payday again. If Quillin is stripped, then it would be Korobov vs whoever the next highest ranked WBO opponent available and it would be for Peter's title. Not signing would literally be the dumbest thing Peter has have done.if Haymon is advising him not to sign, just because he doesn't want Peter fighting on HBO or whatever personal reason he may have against Roc Nation, that's a terrible advisor.

If Quillin doesn't sign that would be his way of black balling himself. Roc Nation doesn't get stuck with anything, they didn't buy the rights to next WBO middleweight title fight, they specifically purchased Quillin Vs. Korobov.

If Quillin doesn't sign, then Korobov Vs. Saunders goes to a purse bid and he loses his title.

The only taking a L from Quillin not signing is Peter Quillin and Matt Korobov and anyone who gets a slice of their purses. Roc Nation spends no money and they'll guaranteed bid on other mandatory fight with a name fighter down the road. They can either deal with them or have all their fighters getting stripped of belts.

I'm sure streams will be available on wiziwig. I see Ryota Murata is on the undercard as well
As is 18 year old Takuma Inoue, he's fighting a debuting Thai but in his second pro fight he beat Fahlan [22-2] who was fresh off knocking out former champ Miyazaki. That whole card is full of talent, Matsumoto is taking a huge step fighting Denkaosan. Hopefully they air the whole thing.

naner12 @naner12 exactly my point. the truth is, Roc Nation will be backed by HBO, no doubt. Jay z's relationship with HBO is legit. Quillin would have to fight on HBO and Al won't allow that. And why would he be worthless just cuz he doesn't have a title. He can decide and say fuck it, let me move up in weight, or fight Curtis Stevens vs that other fucker once that fight is done and get a title. Im not a fan of his by any means but realistically speaking doing this is fucking over Roc Nations debut as a boxing promotional company.
