The hip-hop mogul Marion Knight, known as Suge, a founder of the Death Row Records label, was shot early Sunday at a West Hollywood, Calif., nightclub.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said that Mr. Knight, 49, another man and a woman were shot at 1:37 a.m. at the 1Oak nightclub on Sunset Boulevard. Suspects have yet to be identified, and an investigation is continuing, said Jeff Gordon, a sheriff’s deputy.
In a video posted by TMZ, Mr. Knight appears to be getting into a sheriff’s car and waiting for an ambulance to arrive. TMZ and other websites reported that Mr. Knight was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was said to be recovering from surgery in intensive care. Citing privacy rules, a hospital spokeswoman said she could not provide any information.
The event where the shooting occurred was a party hosted by the rapper Chris Brown to celebrate Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Mr. Brown appeared to respond to the event on his Twitter account Sunday morning, writing, in part, “It’s disappointing that we as a society can’t have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes.”
This mirrors an episode in 2005, when Mr. Knight was shot in the leg at a party in Miami hosted by Kanye West before that year’s Video Music Awards. And Mr. Knight was in the car when the rapper Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in 1996.
